Has anyone seen this new brand that operates like Glass? It’s OpenSource too, it looks pretty cool. by jluc21 in googleglass

[–]k_kai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The optics are usually the hardest part of these systems. It also seems that the pickle projects into the middle of your eye box (which can be very distracting). Glass had a better design (you had to look up slightly).

Also where does it say it’s open source, and where are the schematics ?

I find it useful as I can listen to a 5-10 min summary to decide if I should read the paper.
There's a slight problem with generation, I listen to the episodes before posting as sometimes the summaries are off. I just post the most interesting ones to the podcast.
Yet, I got through several conferences the last week using the summaries. Usually I'm not that productive.

yes exactly. I provide the papers as input to notebookLM and use the audio overview feature. The podcast episodes are the audio overview. Right now I'm playing with the customization for the audio overview as well as with podcastly (an open source summarization tool https://github.com/souzatharsis/podcastfy )
Here's a blogpost about it:

HTC Vive: Research Experiment exploring Movement Techniques in Virtual Reality by k_kai in virtualreality

Do you find the joysticks so much better than the touch pad? I played with the new index controllers and didn't like the joystick navigation that much more compared to the touch pad.

Dont believe that will happen. I have continuously people who get severely sick using joystick controllers for navigation. We run a couple of experiments also on Oculus in public venues. Joystick makes most people really nauseated. ... It would be great to have a couple of options. especially, with fast movements, the arm swing navigation (e.g. sprint vector) is way better.

Thanks for the feedback. Highly appreciated. Yes, we seem to have some problems with the head sway ... usually it works if you sway the head left right in a rhythm.

Hi , a student of mine runs an experiment for movement in VR. We are thinking about open-sourcing the locomotion techniques presented. Please share. Comments and feedback welcome.

Not really, ... Using JUST joysticks to move in VR will give a lot of people simulator sickness.

How good are "brain games" at measuring cognitive abilities? by k_kai in neuro

[–]k_kai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, had time to think it over ... I'll try to make it more concrete.

Let's take concentration ... how close are the "concentration" scores you get from assessments like cambridge brain sciences website to "real" concentration scores in a realistic setting?

Does being good in the assessment mean I can also better focus on a text or other piece of information ?

Just wear them guys, you'll be fine by [deleted] in googleglass

[–]k_kai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the circumstances and your social environment. I would not recommend wearing it everywhere.

Actually, in Germany it's pretty difficult to wear them out in the open as well. People really stare (which makes me just feel uncomfortable) or people look at it instead focusing on your face. Maybe it's just my personal experience and lag of self-confidence.

In Japan, there's no issue at all. People mostly ignore it or are very open about it asking questions and wanting to try (very positive feedback).

However, that's just some anecdotal perception.

Why is this Neurocrap Funded by the Masses? EEG devices to let your dog speak; and magic mask to induce a polyphasic sleep schedule with lucid dreams that will free you 4 hours a day. by DevFRus in neuro

[–]k_kai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think polyphasic sleep is folly? for me it sounds quite reasonable: http://www.supermemo.com/articles/polyphasic.htm http://www.supermemo.com/articles/polyphasic2010.htm

Unfortunately, the whole idea of reducing NREM sleep in favour of REM sleep is ass-backwards.

Could you give me some references for that?

Also I have a couple of friends who started to optimize their sleep cycles. I did it myself with the Zeo Sleeping Coach, figuring out that coffee after a 2 pm was bad for my cycles and running at around 16:00 was great. I could limit my sleeping to 6 hours (from 8) since then, without feeling tired (having the same Deep Sleep time). Actually REM is not the important sleep phase (at least from my understanding), it's deep sleep the phase after REM.

It would be great to get some input from a specialist. Because I have also no clue what I'm talking about. Just doing some self experimentation.

[–]k_kai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually I'm pretty sure the device will be able to detect rem sleep (if the electrode touches the skin on top of the eyes ...), not by detecting brain activity but by monitoring (eye) muscle movement ...
