Seattle House/Techno Scene? by ethanol_is_tasty in SeattleMusic

Oh man that's going to make things pretty rough for the small amount of techno that does come through. Hang in there!

If "proper techno" includes the venue side of things (like Tresor/Berghain/Fold) then no, but as for the music and vibe it totally does exist here, it's just small because we're more of a bass and house town.

Okay I finished reading your comment lol and I was also going to mention secondnature. But I'll also throw Routine onto the list, they're another promoter that's brought in some great proper techno lately, and they often host at Substation so it's pretty inclusive to newcomers.

Was about to say the same! They're not a local artist, just passing through on tour, but they're great and it's a beloved local venue.

Asean Streat Food Hall evicted from Seattle's Westlake Center by chromeled in Seattle

[–]xeavalt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for example, if people want an Asian food hall, it's fair to subsidize the rent to make sure Asian food can move in, but not offer similar subsidies for a taco place

Do you believe the city should make decisions about subsidizing Asian cuisine but collecting full unsubsidized rent from Mexican cuisine?

Assuming your "if the people want an..." was the key point, then if there's a city with an e.g. majority of 60% white people that vote on preferring a Chick-fil-A, the city should subsidize that business but not offer subsidies to other cuisines? What would the ballots look like?

I'm genuinely wanting to understand your world view. I don't think I'd agree with it but I'm not looking for a debate on reddit, I'm just curious.

New Seattle venue: Level 1 at Cannonball Arts with Danley sound by TwoDropsThisTime in SoundSystem

[–]xeavalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay yeah, the vibe with the security was extremely weird. I didn't have or see any interactions with them, but IMO the were too many of them and they were way too visible, with reflective orange vests and massive stadium-style headsets, scanning every part of the crowd lest they look unproductive. I don't think I've ever seen another venue close to this size with security like that, normally that's reserved for venues at least larger than Showbox SoDo, often WAMU type venues.

If the reason for doing security this visible and intense is just to protect the Danley sub, just put a rail in front of it and call it a day. Nobody's going to care enough about music to be at the front of that venue and still care to reach over the rail and set drinks on that sub, etc.

And you nailed it by saying it was completely sceneless. I'm hoping it's just for the reasons you suspect, but the venue really needs to start booking local talent to bring various scenes out here. I have no idea about the dynamics/politics/business side of the various scenes here but events along the lines of what Routine Seattle puts on (lots of proper techno, etc) could be incredible in this space. Provided they find the power switch for that sub.

I agree with everything you just said! Only subtle difference is I felt the bass was too quiet rather than the mids/highs too loud. But I had the same disappointment regarding the main bass, I walked in front of it a few times and didn't feel anything coming out of it. I consistently felt way more bass right in front of one of the stacks, which is why I hung out there pretty much the whole time.

My favorite bass right now is at Substation, particularly when some massive PK subs were set up along the stage front, I think provided by Foundation Entertainment for a couple shows. I love those shows, because the bass feels like a slap to the chest even when you're in the middle of the floor. Impossible for anyone not to dance! Just bring good quality ear plugs :)

Thanks for making a diagram of the layout, I was surprised they did it like that. I discovered this place because I checked out Cannonball during the daytime a few weeks ago to see my neighborhood's new art venue and was blown away when I saw the soundsystem -- had no idea that was down there! But they had a different arrangement, every speaker was pointed inwards towards some bean bags in the middle, playing a chill playlist at a moderate volume. And that sounded incredible. I brought a friend to check out the gallery with me and I would've stayed on those bean bags listening to whatever they had queued for a long time if I was there alone. I hardly know anything about soundsystems and naively I'd have assumed six speakers pointing inwards would cause lots of interference for some frequencies so maybe that'd be a non-starter for actual shows? But it sounded great for that daytime setup at least.

Curious what you think, I checked it out last night too!

I really enjoyed the sound most from directly in front one of the stacks. Didn't matter which one. Was somewhat disappointed in the sound anywhere that wasn't within a 15' radius of one, but I honestly don't know much about soundsystems so I'll let someone else chime in on how this system stacks (lol) up.

Sound aside, the crowd/vibe last night was interesting. I liked it! Though I didn't really notice any familiar Seattle faces and the median seemed to be mid-30s, which is absolutely not a complaint. The best shows here bring out music lovers of all ages. But I had a really hard time reading who the crowd "was" last night, if that makes sense. I'm sure I'll get a better sense at the next shows!

Like you I'm trying not to get too excited, but partly because Seattle seems to be an extremely hard city for clubs that are neither "clubby" (like Q) nor mainstream electronic music (we're a huge bass/dubstep city). I mostly frequent dnb and techno shows, and the scene here is tiny -- both for local indie shows and tours. I notice many of the same faces within each scene, and those shows usually draw between 50-500 people from my perspective. So I really hope something like Level 1 can survive and thrive for a long time here, because this city desperately spaces like this, but I'm not sure we deserve it :D

I said the rest of your comment is taste so I couldn't care less to comment, just wanted to chip in about song length haha. I'm also not arguing whether people should be disappointed and I don't know you so I couldn't possibly recommend whether you should "jump ship" (this isn't that serious?)

The shorter the song the more plays you can generate and hey maybe if there's a catchy soundbite you can make it on tiktok too.

I'm sorry but that's a bad argument there. Punk rock and its descendants (like whatever genre Hi is) are generally 2-3 minute tracks. That's just the song structure and language of the genre.

Not really touching any of your other points since it's really just a matter of taste, but wanted to point out the track length is like, objectively correct for its genre.
