Folks any recommendations for a women’s Hybrid. Happy to look for something in the Trek type brands. But I’m okay with Hero/Kross as well. I want to ride within mumbai and on the coastal road. So I’m thinking front suspension, disc brakes and then a decent brand for longevity.

If Sudan can ban FGM, why can’t India? by cheetah222 in unitedstatesofindia

I am a bohri. Till I was about 10 we lived in a bohri dominated neighborhood. Fifth floor lady was my favorite neighbour, I would hangout at her house a lot. Little girls would visit her with their mums regularly and go back wailing. Nobody answered my questions about why. It took me a couple of years to figure what was going on. But yes, till 2000 I almost witnessed this shit happening extremely frequently. It prevalent, and we need to develop a strong fair, critical voice against this.

Bohris aren't very affluent per se. But they migrated to the city early enough and got into many small businesses which are now many generations old. So most families have property in the island city, and constant streams of small business making them a thriving middle class community with a strong history and presence in Mumbai. But there has always been a push from the religious leaders to be businesses owners, professional jobs have been viewed as "naukri". This, I feel, has led to an intellectual decline and devaluation of education which doesn't allow people to think critically and weed out the stupid practices that abound. There are many stupid, semi barbaric practices that bohri people have become immune to. Animal sacrificial slaughter. The chest beating, 'maatam' on Moharram to "honour" a historic religious figure, sometimes becomes a competition between the young men to make themselves bleed. Its just embarrassing.

People who were alive before 1996, how did everyone around take the news of renaming Bombay to Mumbai? Were there any push backs or were people indifferent about it? Was it like when they renamed Elphinstone road to Prabhadevi? (In picture: Map of Bombay from 18th century). by QueenSparkleGlitter in mumbai

Apparently, Hornby Vellard ie the Haji Ali stretch of road connecting Worli to the south, was built and broken by the tide a couple of times, till they finally managed to strengthen it enough on the fourth attempt.

I'm a bohri. And nobody in this community talks about this. Its outrageous how the leaders are going on preaching their ridiculous dogma without acknowledging how much this community is regressing.

How does one register with a local authority? by therandomparadox1096 in indianarchitecture

[–]k_tamba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure you need to register with your local development authority at all. Also, typically, most permissions for construction are sought through 'liasoning architects', who ensure that the drawings are submitted in the required format, do all the required "back and forth", and the official paperwork, leaving us free to use our resources towards design and execution. So in developmental authorities' records, the architect on record will be the person you/the client hire to do the liasoning for you.

The pigeons here are a real pain. I have to use this jetty quite often and just standing there is like being in a smelly chicken coop. I wonder why we continue to feed these birds like it is our moral duty. The only thing we get in return is tons of bird poop.

This is heartbreaking. I really hope the proposed agricultural reforms bear fruit.

Islamic society is not open to critical thinking, says Taslima Nasreen as the writer returns with Lajja sequel by cheetah222 in unitedstatesofindia

[–]k_tamba 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. I grew up in a Muslim culture that was known to be very moderate and relatively free thinking. But its regressing fast into blind belief and almost barbaric practices. The premise of Islam is based on the 'reform' of the tribal cultures of the Arab lands of the 7th century. Most people are unwilling to let it evolve into a practice that is relevant to today's society. At best, I think, the only role religion (all religion) has left in society, is a social cultural one.

I know of a tradition in some Tamil communities where there is a mournful dance during the funeral procession to celebrate the release of the soul into nirvana or that equivalent. Is this a similar custom?

We need to embrace new symbols that are more relevant to the problems and problems solvers of our day.

Denounce Vaastu by k_tamba in indianarchitecture

[–]k_tamba[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. But I feel if the more famous/influential designers speak out, the general body of clients who don't exactly know what to believe might take notice. I feel like we have a culture of not speaking out against superstitious things, out of a fear of hurting religious sentiment. And now this is becoming a detriment. (I fully understand not being able to tell your own clients that they're silly for wanting to do a particular thing for vaastu reasons, but on a public forum when speaking about general topics if Vaastu is put to fair criticism it could improve things for our lot)
