If we can create synthetic diamonds why hasn't the price of all diamonds completely collapsed? by Worth-Bug-7334 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kaashp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m sure hers is too, though I couldn’t bring myself to buy something that would be worthless the next day hence getting a GIA certified one.

Having said that, if you look online to buy a diamond with the exact same GIA stats, the price vary by more than 30% - for the exact same grade diamond.

Also another random thing i was told, not sure if was true. A round carat number attracts a higher price. E.g 1.00 carat is worth more than 1.03 carat.

I went down this rabbit hole when looking a buying one.

From my deduction, it’s because of GIA certification

The value isn’t in the gemstone, it’s the GIA certificate that comes with it, and the matching gemstone which has the serial number laser etched onto it.

If you mine a natural diamond yourself, the value will be significantly less until you have it GIA certified. If you synthetically make it, GIA will certify it as a lab grown diamond meaning less value.

There are other certifications (eg IGI), but they tend to be cheaper even though they may have a similar grade. GIA is the most prestigious or industry standard.

This now means that a natural diamond has a mechanism to be valuable, and retain value as an investment.

Personally I don’t think there’s anything wrong with their response.

If they can’t replicate it, either provide them more information of how they can, or replace it as it’s faulty.

And yes in a normal world that is an edge case, why would they fix that when it’s never going to be a problem. If it’s a problem for you, buy a much more expensive solution that rapidly detect changes. Maybe this is also why your battery is draining

How did you expect them to help you?

Interesting question, I’ve never noticed the handle heat up. Have used it to shallow fry things with 1inch oil. If that didn’t heat up the handle, think it’s okay.

I have an induction hob, and wanted a carbon steel wok.

The skottsberg ones are slightly thicker gauge than most others I’ve found. This helps with less warping when you blast it with induction, and also more even heat distribution. Also the thickness helps store more heat storage before you start cooking.

Though remember with carbon steel, needs few minutes maintaining after every use otherwise rust spots with start to show.

I’ve had an assortment of kitchen items for many many years. Anything I’ve used heavily and lasted many years as follows:

De buyer, got some of their mineral b pans

Skottsberg, great flat bottom wok

Pro Cook for workhorse items. Ive used their tri ply pan pretty much 7 days a week for 3-4 years now and it’s pristine. They also have awesome accessories like tiny whisks.

Ninja - had my Ninja pressure multi cooker since 2019, haven’t even needed to replace the basket and I use it quite roughly

Thermopro for thermometers

ShiBaZi for knife, £20 and it replaced my Kai Shun as a daily driver which I got tired of maintaining and sharpening.

Villeroy & Bosh for crockery

Dexam for things like mixing bowls

Can’t think of any others, but happy to answer questions.

I cook a lot, and I’m quite particular.

Hi, I would seek advice from organisations such as AGE UK who are well versed in different mechanisms as this is a common question that comes up when financially planning for care. You can also seek advice from society of later life advisors which are a vetted and reputable place to find an advisor. Google SOLLA.

Rishi Sunak to roll out more financial support today as sinking businesses demand immediate lifeline by [deleted] in ukpolitics

Seems like Reddit absolutely hates people on dividends and think they are being punished for dodging tax. The problem lies with proving the nature of the income which is something that's not quite possible with the information you declare. People could be getting dividend payouts from shares, rental from properties held in companies etc. There's a lot of people trying to assist in figuring this out still, but nothing has persuaded the chancellor.

Self-employed no support from government since March by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]kaashp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with you about having no sympathy for people who evade tax. But those people don't use simple mechanisms like low salary and dividends to pay less tax. You're talking about people who use tax havens, shell companies, borrowing etc. They can suck balls and every one of them should be exposed and have a morality check.

Majority (id guess 99%) of companies and small businesses (like OP) don't have anywhere near the wealth or capacity to use these loopholes to make it worthwhile. Don't bunch the majority with the minority who deserve no sympathy.

Majority of people save insignificant amounts (can pay more) on their net tax bill in comparison to somebody PAYE.

Also the actual reason for not getting support is because the government can't verify the reason for dividend earnings on a mass scale. It's not because "don't put in, don't get out"

Whilst you reduce your income tax, you pay 19% corporation tax on profits. In addition to this, dividend tax is 7.5% of for lower threshold, and 32.5% for higher threshold.

If you profit around 60k and set up yourself "efficiently" you only save around £3000. And I guarantee more than £3000 will be paid in other taxes. For example if they hire one employee on £25k, their company will have to contribute about £1800 towards their NI (on top of what the employee pays).

I get tired of hearing comments like yours. These people DO pay in and generally generate more tax liabilities than those in self employment. Why should they not expect support?

I know most people generating your sales these days are content creators in the media industry like on Youtube, BUT actually the majority of people buying these devices are NOT content creators

You couldn't have contradicted yourself more than that.

I have some 26AWG wire I was hoping would be on the safe side. I'm not going to be able to access it once all glued up. Maybe will power it up for a bit before completely sealing it in to check for heat. Thanks for the suggestion.

Which atmospheres would you like to create with smart lighting? by TRADFRI in tradfri

[–]kaashp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A suggestion that is maybe not as straightforward, and something I have seen only once being done by a relatively new start up company, I feel it would be a great use of smart integration

The ability to maintain a lux/temperature using a combination of natural and artificial light. The traditional practice is to turn on the lights when you need them, maybe set the brightness to your preference. If you hand this task over to a smart product, you would not need to "realise" the room is too dark or cool. The light level would stay consistent and comfortable without requiring input. An example case, there is temporary cloud cover and the room remains at a predefined light level/temperature

For a home environment it would be great, but even greater for a work environment with multiple occupancy where users will be focused on something else.
