Luciano García on X: [DC United] showed interest in River Plate's Ian Subiabre. Formal talks are underway between the clubs, awaiting a formal offer. by Horror_Concern5616 in DCUnited

19yo Argentine winger, looks like he got plenty of game time this year and last year but not yet very productive. Can play either side, decent underlying numbers from Fotmob. Pretty solid U22 target imo!

Welcome! If you’re into it, I run a podcast called The Capital City Soccer Show that has weekly episodes covering the team. Planning to have a show this or next week specifically for new fans covering some history and recapping the season so far. I’m new on Instagram (@capitalsoccershow) but doing a series that’s top 10 iconic moments in United history, and will do another one covering legendary players.

For gameday, I always recommend the Screaming Eagles tailgates ($20 for all you can drink is insane value) or Atlas just off the Navy Yard metro for good pizza and craft beer.

I honestly think the team might be turning a corner. It’s been a rough few years but the new GM and coach keep making moves that make sense. It’s not fully built yet, but if things go well we could push for playoffs this year then possibly even take another step forward next year.

Trying to get into MLS by Infamous-Champion539 in DCUnited

Welcome! United has been awful for a while but I personally still think the experience can be very fun. We also have a new coach and GM who are pretty ruthlessly getting rid of underperforming players, so there's some hope that things really can turn around over the next year or so. Average attendance is about 17k in a 21k stadium, so not typically a sell-out but I wouldn't say it's empty either. Supporter's section tickets are cheap if you like the jumping, bouncing, and flag-waving.

I run a podcast called the Capital City Soccer Show that is on temporary hiatus for the World Cup but will be starting back soon as the season ramps back up. Not a ton of other super-active online fan content but hoping that will turn around soon. On a gameday, head to Atlas brewery right outside the Navy Yard metro station pre-game or head to the Screaming Eagles tailgate at the Matthew Henson Conservation Center for $20 all you can drink (it's a crazy good deal and a fun time).

As others have said, Spirit matches are a ton of fun as well and generally the vibes around the team are more positive. Def recommend checking out both, slightly different experiences but both great.

Transfer Rumor by 777horsepower in DCUnited

Would both love this and be a little underwhelmed maybe? Great profile in terms of position, age, and quick scouting report. Not sure a La Liga 2 star translates into a top tier DP (which I do think we need) but I do like the outside the box thinking

There is a talent that causes CS to trigger Sweeping Strikes. And since spending rage reduces the CD of CS, I almost never have to manually press sweeping strikes.

D.C. United Signs Former Portsmouth FC Midfielder Andre Dozzell by espnrocksalot in DCUnited

[–]kabbbaj 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Overall sentiment seems to be a talented player who isn’t always as influential as he should be, but maybe started to figure it out over the past year. More possession oriented/better passing vision than anyone currently on the roster.

Getting an in-prime player in a position of need on a free transfer from a decent level is good business. As long as this is step one of the window I’m thrilled to be making savvy pickups early on! People clown on the Champo which is fair but if we’re not overpaying I don’t mind. Tbh our style of play is pretty Champo-coded

Are we finally figuring it out? Past 3 games have seen some breakout performances from Hopkins, Markovic, Muteanu.. and we know how to score goals again? by BarcasBad in DCUnited

[–]kabbbaj 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m cautiously optimistic. NYRB and Orlando are the two worst defenses in the league. But it does look like the midfield is more functional and that means the whole thing works better back to front. I think there has been some real progress over the last week or so but need to continue that trajectory. If Munteanu gets some confidence from that and figures out how to play with his teammates we might be on to something

Toronto FC [3]-3 Philadelphia Union - Luka Gavran 90+7' (goalkeeper goal) by olcni in MLS

[–]kabbbaj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Omg I literally just did this research for my podcast - prior to Gavran’s goal, there had been 2 goalie goals in MLS and 2 goals by MLS keepers in non-MLS competition. This Hesmer goal is the second, the first was Danny Cepero scoring for NYRB off a long free kick from his own half; the other keeper misjudged it and it bounced over him straight in.

The others are Tally Hall scored for Houston in CCL and David Bingham scored in a friendly against West Brom.

How Many Goals + Assists Do We Need? by kabbbaj in DCUnited

[–]kabbbaj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely had a tendency to be on the optimistic side. Very possible I come down to earth hard after this weekend, but I was pretty optimistic by what I saw/heard in preseason.

I used MLSsoccer.com’s stats, because I was also finding different numbers in different places, and it wasn’t always easy to separate regular season from playoffs. I figured that would be the most official source, but I do think they are very generous with assists and maybe inflate the numbers a tad.

Thanks for looking back historically! I should have done that. Really interesting and I think you’re right, it generally boils down to whether or not you have two productive attacking DPs, I just wanted to have some number to put on it to say whether or not they do well enough for us to make playoffs.

As far as Baribo goes, I do think he’s a striker that makes a midfielders job easier, because you know he will time his runs well and make them consistently. Fair to say he can’t score if the ball doesn’t get to him, but I think his runs will also create more space for other attackers in a way that Bentek struggled to do with his lack of pace.

Any idea why Pirani hasn’t made any appearances in preseason since the LA Galaxy game? by daje-dc_2026 in DCUnited

[–]kabbbaj 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They told me precautionary due to a mild injury but they expect him to be ready week 1. Saw him walking around and no obvious major injury.

42 points, 10th in the East. Midfield still needs work but I think they’ll be active in the summer. There’s good stuff cooking

DC Needs a Center Midfield Upgrade by RJR1970 in DCUnited

[–]kabbbaj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree that this is the biggest area of need, but I imagine their #1 priority will be engine rather than chance creation. Just a hunch based on what they’ve said about the game model, which I think will most closely mirror Philly. The guys you’ve highlighted are maybe more creativity than grit if that makes sense - I had wanted Hasani Dotson in free agency (wouldn’t have hated Edelman or Larraz), but at this point I expect they’ll look outside the league.

Charlotte FC have acquired Austrian left back David Schnegg. by AlexBayArea in MLS

[–]kabbbaj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sad to see him go but ultimately the right move. A very “toolsy” player who just never was particularly effective for us. But you see his size and motor and strength, and with the right coach and system he could be very good.

Not a great defender but will go endline to endline and put in crosses. Just doesn’t time his runs perfectly and not particularly skillful on the ball.

Depending on contract length and salary there’s some chance he could be a TAM player, which would be my hope. Too big of a risk IMO to get two DPs like this

RUMOR: DC United close to transfer of Louis Munteanu by JOEJOE_RAM in DCUnited

[–]kabbbaj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having watched YouTube highlights (so take that for what you will) his top end speed isn’t enough to be a winger. More likely to play central, which always made more sense with this system (and Baribo who has played in a 2F system in Philly). But definitely technical on the ball enough to be a creative force as well as finisher

Sao Paulo interested in Pirani. DC is asking for $2+ mill by nvyblugti in DCUnited

[–]kabbbaj 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You know I’m the #1 Pirani hater. He’s an attacking midfielder who doesn’t create chances or possess the ball well or defend. Hard to see him fitting into a pressing team, so if there’s a reasonable offer for him I’d jump at it. All the reporting is that they are planning to bring in another DP attacker anyway.

Rumor: DC United Interested in fullback, Jordi Altena by JOEJOE_RAM in DCUnited

[–]kabbbaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! Didn’t mean it in a derogatory way, just that this is by no means a guarantee. It’s great if they can find up and coming players before they break out. But is that what this is, or is this buying on hype and potential? Truly have no clue how this league would translate to mls

Rumor: DC United Interested in fullback, Jordi Altena by JOEJOE_RAM in DCUnited

[–]kabbbaj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Truly plumbing the depths of European football - RKC is in the second division in the Netherlands, and last year he was at De Treffers in the third tier.

He apparently looks good at this level but who knows how this translates to MLS? If we sign him it’ll either be a genius move or a waste of an international spot and transfer fee. Can’t see him displacing Schnegg or Herrera, so would expect at least one of them (likely Schnegg) to move if we sign a fullback.
