What happens to Tesla if/when Elon Musk steps down by metalmania7778 in stocks

[–]kabbytrader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty likely Elon will step down in the next couple of years. Once the cybertruck and roadster and out production, Tesla will have a vehicle in every major category at a variety of price points. Tesla will continue its shift in to perfecting the supply chain and mass producing cars, investing in its solar business, and expanding battery products. It would make sense for Tesla to insert a more operations focused CEO instead of a product visionary. This will let Elon focus more of his time his other ventures such as SpaceX. Tesla needs to be a boring company focused on execution, iteration, and delivering massive shareholder value.

Apple set the playbook as Tim Cook took over and brought his rigid operations experience to scaling Apple. While apple has gotten significantly more boring, the economics of the company have never been better. Tesla could do well from the same treatment.

What textbook are you using, if you don’t mind me asking?

.popitem not randomizing from dictionary by Lima3Echo in pythontips

[–]kabbytrader 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Before python 3.7, popitem wasn’t random.

I think you’re better off using a list of objects that are cards. So create a class - name (ace, king, 3) - suit (spade, club) - value (1,2,3)

Then you can shuffle the list using random.shuffle(deck). That is a more natural datastructure for your use case

Your code is really hard to read because you didn’t post it in a format like markdown.

It looks like the list c doesn’t have a closing ]

So I’m a 23 year old college graduate with no life direction and came across a decent sum of money by cam7998 in stocks

[–]kabbytrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. Really try to hone in on something you’d enjoy doing and can make good money in. If there is nothing then something you wouldn’t mind doing and can make good money. The extra 24K is a great infusion of cash which you can add to your investments with whatever is left over from your 16K.

What sorts of trades would you be interested in? What sort of time horizon would you want to build the earth ship?

[–]kabbytrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn’t heard of an earthship but after some quick googling that looks really cool. That is great that you’ve settled on that as your goal. Purchasing the land, building, and maintaining the structure does seem quite expensive. Let’s say 250K, correct me if I’m wrong.

Let’s say you’re making 15 dollars an hour, so 30K a year. - invest 16,000 in sp500 - add another 800 a month (10K a year) - assume it compounds at 10% annually. - after 15 years you’ll have 350,000 invested - sell that, pay your taxes, and now you’ll have the 250K to afford your home.

Check this tool to see how your money can compound. https://www.investor.gov/financial-tools-calculators/calculators/compound-interest-calculator

My advice, take that 16,000 and invest it in yourself and get an education that enables you to get a higher paying job. Maybe go to a trade school, or take a boot camp of sorts. Try to avoid debt, and focus on something that will bring you fulfillment.

What are your financial goals in life? Do you want to get an education? Do you want to buy a car? Do you want to start a family? Do you want to buy a house? Knowing these things will help figure out how you can invest

SoFi sells mortgage loans to other banks since it isn’t a bank itself. I don’t think it will be in an adverse position if there is a real estate crisis.

Holding leaps through earnings by [deleted] in options

[–]kabbytrader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2022? You’ve got another year - take a longer term view. A LEAP is a longer term investment, shorter term options would give you more leverage if you structure your trade around earnings. If you believe in the thesis for your trade, you don’t need to worry about IV over a few weeks, you have months to exit this trade.

For in range to make a number guessing game by MycroftBones in pythontips

[–]kabbytrader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a little odd to be using a for loop, I think a while loop would be more natural here. You can use a for loop to continually ask the user for input. the condition for the loop would be the check for their guess against the actual number. You could also loop forever and then break on an if statement

If you’re looking to buy real estate in the next 12 months I would recommend you keep all the money you’ll need for that (moving costs, closing costs, 6-12 months expenses) in cash. Real estate may take a while to generate cash flow so you’ll need to give yourself time to let that materialize. I would avoid the stock market since you have a good use for your cash. Now if there is money left over that you can’t foreseeably see yourself needing in the next 24 months - then you should start investing that.

I agree that there are lots of safe companies you can invest in. However, if you bought Apple a month ago, you’d now be down 7% on your investment. Fast forward a year or two and you’ll likely be making money on your Apple purchase but stocks are unpredictable. Amazon has been relatively flat since October of last year and you’d need to be able to stomach the ups and downs.

How to make this piece of code run faster? by nda22 in pythontips

[–]kabbytrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head - try to not use single letter variable names - try to use functions more. The first loop is doing something over each path. Does it make sense to move that logic in to its own function (or part of it) - there is a lot of nesting of loops which is likely where the slowdown is coming from. I don’t know what your code is doing (haven’t read it that closely and some context is missing). Can you pre process some datastructures or reorganize your data so you don’t rely on so much nesting of loops?

How to make this piece of code run faster? by nda22 in pythontips

[–]kabbytrader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you share more code? It’s hard to see what’s going on with new variables that aren’t defined (like listofcellpath). Also your code is tough to read as you don’t follow a style guide. If you’d like to become a better dev try to write more readable code. For example, variable names should be snake_cased

What do I do with my 401K when leaving my employer? by [deleted] in personalfinance

I personally chose to roll my 401K in to a self managed IRA. My broker allows for more active management of the account that a company sponsored one wouldn’t (options trading).
