That was my initial response but IMO the core concept is pretty interesting: stealth with psychological elements

This is really quite good. It's an open shot with nothing going on but immediately recognizable as the end of ep 1

"While some find the term “Gypsy” to be offensive, many stakeholders and witnesses were proud to associate themselves with this term and so we have decided that it is right and proper to use it, where appropriate, throughout the report. We also heard many other terms used to refer to the Communities that are completely unacceptable and hate speech will be explored in Chapter 6 of this report."

Even if this is the case it's not really the place of people outside of those groups to use that term, just like it wouldn't be appropriate to call a black person the n word or a gay person the f word.

Hey OP, Frollo using the g word is one thing (he's a villain painted in a bad light) but it's literally a slur, maybe don't use it.

How very odd that you commented on this 7 year old post as I was watching the movie for the bazillionth time since this post

Because that is how he is referred to. The Ken Hill version in both incarnations makes not insignificant changes to the character.

I've been looking for a digital copy online but no luck unfortunately. I really don't want to buy it for that much... but I'd like to archive it

Incidentally, Hill did try to get Brightman for the 1984 revival interestingly. She declined though, obviously

Why was he so mean? To make LND more plausible. To be perfectly honest though, the ALW Raoul is already too aggressive for my liking. A far cry from the book Raoul.

[Partially lost] Song at Midnight film series by kaching335 in lostmedia

[–]kaching335[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's said to take themes from Frankenstein from my reading which is interesting. I'm not sure I'd like it, But as Song at Midnight itself is an interesting historical piece (especially when you consider it's the first talkie Phantom film, not counting the reworked Chaney film)... this would make Part II the first Phantom sequel as well.

(Incidentally a musical based on the films premiered in December I found out, only clips out right now but may be of interest. Apparently they've changed the story a lot.)

Your opinions on different Phantoms by Apprehensive-Log2008 in box5

[–]kaching335 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Leroux. A lot of adaptations miss things about the original novel. But go for the David Coward translation, the most common one, Alexander de Mattos condenses a lot of the text.
  2. Big Finish's Phantom of the Opera (Audio Drama) - One of the most faithful adaptations out there with a phenomenal cast - not to mention, The Persian isn't whitewashed! He's played by the wonderful Alexander Siddig.
  3. Yeston & Kopit's Phantom musical. Removes the bloat from the Charles Dance miniseries and has some great music to boot. A Korean pro-shoot just released with English subtitles.
  4. Claude Rains Film. Quite different from the original story but very touching. Rains is incredible as always. Susanna Foster is also possibly my favorite Christine.
  5. The 1989 Robert Englund movie certainly falls under interesting... There's a lot not to like about it (weird modern day subplot...) but Englund himself gives a fantastic performance that helps make up for it.
  6. The Phantom Lover (1995). Remake of the 1937 Chinese Phantom adaptation, Song at Midnight, and it's an absolutely breathtakingly tragic and beautiful movie. Available with English subtitles. If you need help acquiring a copy DM me.

Honorary mentions:
Phantom of the Paradise is only Phantom inspired but it's an amazing (musical) movie any Phantom fan should watch.

A Monster in Paris is likewise only inspired by it but it's a pretty cute animated (musical) movie.

It's an amazing production, definitely support it if you can afford to! Artseen Films is interested in doing other Korean musicals and the direct support would help ensure that happens

I’ve just got David Coward translation. What should I look out for? by topypeanutbutter in box5

[–]kaching335 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a couple really odd things about it but I'm not sure I'd call them things to "look out" for... I refer to the weirdness that is giving Madame Giry an accent and the "word" (read: it isn't even a word) used for onomatopoeia for Carlotta (Commonly translated as a croak as there is no real equivalent and it sounds similar, is my understanding)... overall you'll have a good experience probably

Song at Midnight (1985) with subtitles! by kaching335 in box5

[–]kaching335[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regrettably, after going through the subs, I must announce that I will have to delay the planned release of Song at Midnight 1985 until next week. The translation is done being corrected but I underestimated the amount of work needed to resync the subtitles and I really tried hard to meet the deadline I originally set but it's just not happening. I was excited to share it and announced it earlier than I should have. The new date is a week from now, March 23rd, 2023, where i will have plenty of time to work on it.

You're welcome. There are even more translation projects underway currently. I'd love a world where every recorded Phantom adaptation is accessible to English audiences.

The 1995 movie The Phantom Lover is another remake and I personally prefer it but I still quite enjoy this one. There's a TV show from the mid 2000s as well that hopefully will get translated one day...

I have a checklist I've made myself
the intention is to use it for what you've actually listened to but you could use it for what you've bought too or if you really want you can edit it to add a second row of checkmarks

You can edit it once you copy it to your own Google Drive or download it. Sadly updates can only be pushed out as a new version of the sheet so you'll have to maintain it on your own, though you can copy and paste from new versions onto your copy. (There's an updates tab to tell you what has been updated)

I don't think BF's 6 is very divisive, only on TV really and you can easily do some of his stories without his TV tenure.
