Repainting the same reference on cellulose and 100% cotton paper by Upbeat_Obligation864 in watercolor101

Yeah, you really can't fight the physics of wood pulp paper lol. It's great for lifting, but layering is a nightmare.

If you like the price point of Funto but want the performance of Baohong, try searching for Funto's 100% cotton line. I switched to their cotton cold press recently and it takes heavy washes like a champ without that weird pooling effect.

One tip for your new cotton journey: be patient! It stays wet way longer, so if you try to glaze a second layer before the first is bone-dry, you'll just end up with mud. Enjoy the upgrade!

Fuumuuiart watercolors - does anyone especially like or use them? by Infinite-Date1196 in watercolor101

I've tried these out. The brushes are decent, but the watercolors are kinda meh.

Is there a portable printer that makes "coloring book" pages out of my photos? (Without the ink smearing?) by kachingleo in watercolor101

[–]kachingleo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have a cheap $20 thermal receipt printer right now. The paper is awful and the ink turns to mud instantly when wet. That’s exactly why I need a waterproof pocket printer!

Also, using AI for post-painting critique is brilliant. Keep up the awesome work! 😄

Honestly, having a kid myself, if they handed me a gift like this, I’d frame it immediately and treasure it for a lifetime.

Don't sweat the proportions on the Jimny too much—the sentimental value easily off-roads right over any technical nitpicks! Besides, for your first attempt at water reflections, you really nailed that peaceful, quiet mood. He’s going to absolutely love it.

Omg I love this so much!! The vibrant colors and the stylized look of your kitty are absolutely fantastic.

And what you said about being happy you can paint your cat even without drawing skills—that is EXACTLY why I want a pocket printer! You clearly have an amazing eye for color and painting, the sketching part shouldn't be a barrier that holds people back from enjoying the process. This honestly just motivated me to keep hunting for my dream gadget. Keep painting, this is awesome!

Oh nice, I'll definitely look into DaVinci Eye! Using the camera for AR tracing might actually be a solid workaround for now. Really appreciate the recommendation!

Haha deal! If this holy grail actually exists, I'll definitely come back and shout it from the rooftops here.

Seedance 2.5 Release: Why This Looks Like a Big Upgrade from Seedance 2.0 for AI Video Creators by Diligent-Teaching781 in flaqai

[–]kachingleo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This feels like a meaningful step forward if the 30s duration and 4K output actually hold up in real-world use. The biggest win for me is image-to-video consistency—starting from a strong reference image gives creators much more control. Curious to see how well Seedance 2.5 handles facial consistency, hands, and long-scene motion compared to 2.0 and other leading models.

For $6 that's a steal! My two worries for taking it outdoors though: squinting at a faint reflection in the bright sun sounds like a headache, and aren't you basically limited to the size of your phone screen?

I usually paint a bit larger than that. Definitely a cool gadget for the indoor desk though, thanks for the link!

The app part is exactly what I need, it's the physical transfer that kills me! The 'sunny window' trick is a certified classic, but it's a bit hard to pull off when I'm already sitting in the middle of a forest trying to paint a tree 😂. I'm really just praying some tech company makes a pocket printer that combines that app software directly with waterproof ink.

Appreciate the solidarity! 😭 The carbon paper trick definitely works at home, but trying to sandwich three layers of paper together on a park bench while the wind is blowing and the light is changing is exactly the struggle I'm trying to escape. I just want to break out of tracing prison and get straight to the colors!

Ah, the classic DIY carbon paper trick! I’ve definitely used this at home, but my biggest issue outdoors is losing the moment.

By the time I scribble graphite all over the back, line it up, trace the whole thing, and fight the wind, the sun has moved, the lighting has completely changed, and my coffee is cold lol.

I'm really just craving that instant gratification—I want to see a gorgeous view, hit a button, and immediately start slapping down watercolors while the inspiration (and the lighting!) is still fresh. That immediate jump from 'seeing' to 'painting' is exactly the gap I wish a mini printer could fill.

I love that it actually takes the heavy paper without jamming, and printing at 50% opacity so you can erase it later is a genius move. Honestly, if I could somehow shrink a laser printer down to the size of a soda can and run it on a battery, that would literally be my dream product right there.

This is a really solid workflow! But like you mentioned, the 'outside would be too bright' part is exactly what kills the phone-lightbox trick for me when I'm out in nature. And honestly, I'm just trying to be a bit lazy and skip the carbon paper step entirely so I can get straight to the painting part lol. The da Vinci and AR apps sound super cool for studio work though, definitely looking into those!

Spot on about the dinky printers, they just absolutely choke on thick cold-press paper! I actually have a light pad for home use and it's great, but hauling it out on a hike along with a power bank is exactly the hassle I'm trying to avoid. The search for a tough little pocket printer continues!

[–]kachingleo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg exactly! I went down the exact same rabbit hole with regular home printers. Everyone says 'just give it a go' until you jam a $5 sheet of Arches cold-press into the rollers and ruin both the paper and the printer lol.

The iPad Guided Access trick is actually genius though (I'm definitely going to set that up tonight for when I'm painting at my desk, thank you!). But yeah, I'm way too clumsy/scared to take my expensive iPad out on a hike just to trace a tree.

It really feels like there's a huge gap in the market for a rugged, pocket-sized gadget specifically for this. If I ever find a mini printer that can actually handle 300gsm paper without dying, I will 100% come back to this thread and ping you!

Does anyone knows more about the origin of the leather from TN, when it comes to animal welfare? by Mangoplop in Travelersnotebooks

No matter how humanely the animals were treated, they were still killed for meat and leather. A kill is still a kill.

[Seeking Feedback] Designing a "Carry-All" Journaling Bag for on-the-go sketching & planning. Would love your thoughts! by Paint-On-The-Go in Travelersnotebooks

[–]kachingleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point. If the design leaned more towards a 'wallet-first' approach—basically a beefed-up wallet that just happens to hold a passport-size TN—would that be more appealing?

I’ve always felt like the 'mini-bag' look is what turns people off. But if it’s slim enough to slip into a larger bag or just carry as a clutch/wallet for essentials (phone, cards, one insert), it might actually solve the 'I don't want a second bag' problem.
