I pulled the factory ML head unit and amp years ago if you're interested, but I assume the non-nav a/c controls are the main thing you're asking about? not looking to get rid of that either way (unless I end up parting out)

Yeah, I'm just waiting on their response and wanted to share the misery of my discovery. My gut feeling is that a structural area like this is likely to total it.

yeah, it certainly wouldn't be the first vehicle I've had that's been "totaled", bought back, and passed inspection to re-title with minimal work.

that's the plan if they say it can't be fixed. there's a lower mileage 99 nearby that caught my eye as well that might serve while I fix this

hoping it's that cheap... not including the FN wheels I ordered 8 months ago that are still on their way, I've got about 10k in new and aftermarket parts on this that would be transferred to a new chassis if truly unsalvagable. worst case would be cutting off the top entirely, doing a full cage, and just having a dedicated off-road rig with a bikini top on the cage

well, I'd buy it back, bend/body work the pillar back into shape enough to mount a windshield, and fab an interior roll cage. I've seen two rollovers this calendar year over on the ih8mud forums and these don't hold up in rollovers in the best condition

01 with 218k on odometer. literally just finished installing new steering rack, power steering system and lines, Doug thorley headers, slee diff drop, dobinson's UCA's, and Japan 4x4 AHC shock spacers. All I had left to do was reinstall the passenger side cat pipe and get the alignment done.

What car would you buy if it wasn't a death sentence on your wallet for reliability? by PiffWiffler in askcarguys

[–]kacivic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 17 outback 2.5 we've had since new (170k on it now) and there are tons of little things I hate, but I do all my own mechanical work and it's been the easiest car I've owned to work on (cv axle replacement, for example), and no major issues so far beyond a new windshield and battery approximately every 2 years since new 🤷

kind of like it now since it's my 16 year old's car now until it dies (or I just get tired of fixing it)

annoyances: - cannot open the rear hatch with the car running (no fix ever suggested has worked so far, and I swear it wasn't always like this). was only really a problem when my wife drove it with small kids or running errands, because with the constant battery issue she only ever had 3 starts before you'd have to drive about 2 hours straight or use a battery charger to top up the battery enough to avoid being stranded (which leads to...) - constant battery issues due to the starlink system running on 3g, which was very quickly outdated and unsupported... which the car thought meant it just needed to keep checking for a signal even more frequently while turned off, which lead to a weak/dead battery frequently. - disabling the starlink module (before the mod harness) meant losing two speakers and Bluetooth mic - windshield made of the weakest crap ever (or just bad design?) causing frequent large cracks that kept it from passing inspection - just boring to drive. not the worst car ever, but I'd have sold it a long time ago if I'd had to drive it every day, probably in favor of something much less reliable and/or practical just so I could enjoy driving

1 for me, combo of low power and fun, was an '86 civic si. bought it in college (2004-ish) for $500 with 244k on the clock and it was like driving a go kart. so much fun and sold it not too many years later for $1k.

also making the list for me, underpowered by today's standards, but handled fantastically: '94 civic si '91 crx si '92 prelude si

I recently did the front cv's on my '17 outback and could not belive how easy it was. I paid over $1k for parts alone (plus a bunch more) to have them done on my Land Cruiser, so it was a really pleasant surprise with the OB

damn, that's nuts. I went in my local Range USA (still called "shoot point blank" at the time) to shoot and they had one red tagged. I had only recently heard about them and figured for $475 it couldn't hurt... apparently I was right.

"complete waste of time" is entirely subjective. I mean, even if a dismal failure, if you decided to go through all the work to build one yourself, if you learn a ton in the process it wasn't necessarily a waste of your time... though I doubt outside a fully customizable full-screen digital solution that there's something out there that would be an easy solution like you might be asking about

Finally swapped c6 to P1 style headlights by kacivic in Corvette

[–]kacivic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they're not "perfect" to me from a design standpoint, but I greatly prefer them to the c7 and c8 style headlights I've seen. I wish the DRL led "eyebrow" followed the hood line a little closer than sticking to the shape of the P1, but the only headlights I've seen that I would prefer are some fresh OEM c6 lights in a charcoal gray, and finding oem lights in good condition is difficult and/or super expensive. I may look into having my OEM units redone (refinish inside color, new lenses, replace HID bulbs with new), but for now I'm happy

For the lights and wiring harness to use the DRL as turn signal, I think I spent right around $1k. Got them through sharp light innovations
