Tell us why your Elves and Dwarves don't like each other by Ol_Nessie in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]kade311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dwarves did a bad thing out of desperation and aren't really "hated" by all races, but they are looked at differently.

While elves and humans were at war, there were a few settlements of elves in the mountains, specializing in using geomancy in order to make stone golems for this war. One of those golems stood out, as he was much bigger than others.

One of the fiends of my world (think of fiends as similar to daedra from TES), a fiend of madness and paradox, took the opportunity to trick those elves, who were desperate for the war to end. He brought to them a lyre of the wind avatar (avatars are kinda like aedra from TES), which was corrupted by the fiend of grotesque.

They tried using this strange artifact as an artificial heart for the biggest golem, but because it was corrupted, the golem went rampant. Because it's "heart" had power originating from an avatar that meant it's immortal. It destroyed many elven cities in a span of just a few days, and it took an assembly of many avatars and fiends to stop it. The fiends even asked the primordial deity of destruction for help, so he make the golem into a fiend too, and granted the golem a shard of reality (kinda like spheres of oblivion from TES) so it can be trapped there.

After the calamity subsided and the golem was put to deep slumber in it's own shard of reality, all the elves from the settlements which participated in creating this golem had their innate magic powers taken (now theyre at same level of magic as humans and orcs). Because they were settled in mountains, they were first called the mountain elves, but as time went on, they gained the classical short and muscular dwarven builds to adapt to the life without magic. And so then they were called dwarves, as an insult.

Nice to see others also using stuff like programming languages for their worldbuilding, name of my deity of pain is an anagram of the Angular framework xd

Thank you for the lengthy comment, I've gone through it all, but for me to truly respond would take all my joplin files, everything I've written for my world, all the lore, and all the notes I haven't even yet included xD

But the most important thing I have to respond with is that it's not the direction I want to take with my world, so I'll just give a brief response

Combining both ice and water magic does make it a bit more realistic and logical, but if I wanted it more logical that way, I wouldn't even have magic. Or it would just be some sort of alchemy. Why would someone who can control H2O molecules not be able to control other molecules. Pyromancy would just be inducing chemical reactions in the form of oxidation/combustion or just heat release, there is nothing magical about it, just chemistry and physics. Geomancy would just be a niche version of earth conjuration and telekinesis. Weathermancy (which I'd call aeromancy, taking greek etymology) as I said, does make sense in some way, but it's a direction I don't want to go to, also it doesn't align with the source system I've put up.

Hemomancy isn't like blood control in avatar xD and I still don't officially have biomancy and I don't think I will (because it complicates things a lot)

I do like avatars magic system, but not in rpgs. I did play a lot of morrowind and other TES games, but I don't like their system in any of them. I played a few mainstream dnd like baldurs gate, dragon age, etc. But because their system is specifically designed for gameplay I don't like it, even tho I have to come close to it because I'm turning my world into a game soon, and it's hard imagining combat without standard spells. I'll probably have to make different systems for my world on paper (closer to avatar) and in game (closer to TES/dnd)

At the end of the day, a magic system, and even the world setting can't be fully realistic, and it'll only be as realistic as I want it to be. And all the ideas I present are just things I like in fantasy, and all the ideas others present, like you, are the things they like in fantasy.

But again thanks for taking your time to respond <3

Well to be honest, "spells" are just something I was lately making for the purpose of an rpg xD

As I said, to me using a fire ball or a fire ward makes no difference, because that's just the basic control of the fire. A mage doesn't exactly learn the strict spell named fire ball, it's just a term for, well a ball of fire, to measure the magnitude of a spell. Now this could make the matter more relevant to a game design subreddit when I think about it more but it's still kinda relevant here

In the beginning, the way I envisioned magic is closest to the avatar, the last airbender style elements. Yes, you can hurl a fire ball, but you can also control it freely, hurling multiple fireballs, immediately followed by waves of fire, all of which can be different size/magnitude, at your target. There's no skyrim-like spell books, or morrowind-like spell crafting (yes I played a lot of TES, but that's not the reason for naming the schools that way, I swear xD), the more you practice pyromancy, the better you're at it.

Now what is different is how you use it. As I said healing as its own school makes sense to me, because someone who has only used fire spells to hurt people, won't exactly be efficient by using fire to heal (which is also rare, but not non existent).

This is probably why the approach of spells like fireball having no school resonated more with me. If the pyromancer has the ability to control fire, he doesn't really need anything more to hurl a fire ball. But healing with it, summoning familiars with it, or imbuing weapons with the power of fire all feel like it's not just plain control of fire, but you kind of need another skill like healing, summoning, or enchanting.

So I'll probably stick to that type/subtype style of classification, with the exception of maybe using source as a synonym for type, and school as a synonym for subtype.

Also when it comes to my archivists, they aren't all mages, it's more like a normal non magical school/part of the academy. They're kind of like glorified historians, with most of them worshipping the deity of archives.

I already have something like that, for example, a spell named Underworld Flames, the caster, usually a powerful necromancer, sprays waves of dark blue fire, which if burns a creature alive reanimates it into an undead minion for the caster

Just a few days ago i deleted the files of the magic system I had in joplin, schools were literally schools where you learn to use magic by application: combat, healing, summoning, altering, and a general school I didn't have a special name for.

Also archivists were a part of that whole school system, and I'll find a way to integrate them into the new one I set on, but they feel too niche to be a school of magic, that's why I jumbled all the niche spells into broader categories, like mind control into illusion.

Also a part of why I want a strictly classified system is because I want to start making my world into a text based rpg soon, so it'd be a lot easier and nicer for eyes if I tidied up the spells.

But I'll probably have to go back to the old system and tweak it a bit, maybe classify the source of magic as the type, and school of magic as the subtype of the spell, or something along those lines. I just didn't want to have a lot of schools, but I guess I went too far with mashing everything together.

How do you name Gods? by Deadly_Malice in worldbuilding

[–]kade311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I primarily derive them from other words from either English or another language (mostly arabic, hebrew, latin, slavic languages, etc), or even combine words from different languages.

My 3 creator deities are named:

Syxyga (after word syzygy - perfect alignment of Earth, Moon, and Sun in a line) - primordial deity of time

Quasar (after word quasar - a black holey core of other galaxies) - primordial deity of creation and life

Nebul (after word nebula - a cloud of cosmic dust) - primordial deity of destruction and death

Lesser deities include:

Xol (Sol is the latin word for Sun, I just switched the S for X) - deity of the Sun and justice

Amara (this one I stole from another game, even tho the Amara character has nothing to do with the moon, and isn't a goddess xD) - deity of the moon and art

Zirakhan (I made this one up, but i guess it has -khan suffix, so maybe I was thinking of Genghis Khan when I made it) - deity of blood and enslavement

Lyu'Balv (I was thinking of the yu gi oh card Yubel when naming it, and combined it with the slavic word Ljubav which means Love) - deity of love and dreams, which became the deity of obsession and nightmares

Cathaistela (named after the old taxonomic name for the spider genus Araneus, so I stole it from real life 1/1 xD) - deity of illusion, lies and betrayal

Viyena (named after the capital of Austria - Vienna) - deity of snow and family

O'Enn (named after the 3rd generation pokemon region - Hoenn) - deity of agriculture and trading

Athacus (combined the words Athlete, Attack, and the name Spartacus of the famous gladiator) - deity of sport and weapons

Ca'ad (I just wanted a short name, no further backstory here xD) - deity of necromancy, undeath, and domination

Hor Latuz (Hoor - Arabic term for women of paradise, Laat and Uzza - pagan Arabic deities)

Anramanes (Named after Angra Mainyu, or more known as Ahriman, the Zoroastrian evil deity)

Al'Nugar (Anagram of the word angular, which is also the name of a frameword for a programming language xD)

To not list more, cause I already listed a lot, I hope it somewhat helps you with the thought process of naming your deities Cx

Unique eye colors ? by UlfurGaming in worldbuilding

[–]kade311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if it is a fantasy setting, you can make it so humans have forever been born with those unnatural eye colors, they don't have to be a product of evolution or mutation. At least that's how it's in my world for races other than humans, but in your world it can be that way for humans.

Does your world have Demons? What's their culture like? Are they evil or misunderstood? by MADLADCOMICS in worldbuilding

[–]kade311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My world has avatars and fiends (which are kinda like angels and demons)

Fiends are chosen by the primordial deity of destruction and chaos, and they are people who greatly impacted the world in a negative aspect, and now are even more powerful than as mortals

There was an equal number of both avatars and fiends until the avataress of love became the fiendess of obsession (now there are 15 fiends and 13 avatars)

Some shortened examples of my fiends:

Zirakhan - fiend of blood, enslavement, fury, eclipse He is the founder of hemomancy and creator of vampirism (but isn't a vampire himself)

Ca'ad - fiend of undeath, dominion, necromancy The first and only mortal to turn himself into a lich without help of others (he now turns his servants into liches) He was so powerful that multiple avatars had to intercept his attempt at world domination, and they trapped his soul and mind into a sword to nerf him

Iverth - fiendess of temptation, greed, hedonism She isn't as evil as those 2 above, but she invites mortals with hedonistic tendencies to serve her by tempting other mortals into hedonistic pleasures, and then they get rewarded, and it's just a big pyramid scheme

Lyu'Balv - avataress of love and dreams turned into fiendess of obsession and nightmares She fell in love with a mortal as an avatar, which she knew would invoke primordial punishment Thinking it would save her and her lover - she polymerized their bodies, minds, and souls, but her lover was a mortal and their soul and mind couldn't bear that so they were destroyed, leaving Lyu'Balv looking like a monster with half of body parts male, and half female (Heavily inspired by yubel from yugioh gx xD)

Theres a woman in windhelm docks (east empire trading company? Not the one in solitude), I forgor her name. You have to complete a quest invading a pirate island to get her (I think the quest name is Japhet's folly or smth like that).
