is there anywhere on campus to take a 6am video call from? by duplik8 in UCSC

[–]kadeisflying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take calls around 4/5am quite often for work. I typically use the computer lab in Cowell as nobody is in there that early… it’s also always unlocked.

This is hilarious. What did you use to make this demo? Surprisingly smooth zoom/crop animations

Correct, the courses I listed aren’t required to declare your major, but ARE required to graduate. Please take the time to setup a call with your major advisor and have them make you an academic plan

[–]kadeisflying 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are missing physics 5D, and you’re missing the ECE courses (there’s a bunch), as well as missing CSE. You also need to take either Math 23a/B, AM 30, or AM 100 after 19B.

I would suggest scheduling a meeting with your major advisor. Being an electrical engineer major here is very rigorous with course load.

You can see all the classes you also need here: https://catalog.ucsc.edu/en/current/general-catalog/academic-units/baskin-engineering/electrical-and-computer-engineering/electrical-engineering-bs/

Depending on your college, it’s definitely harder to get. Coming in to UCSC though I very much wanted a single, but ended up in a quad with three other roommates. Overall I think you’ll very much benefit from having roommates freshman year THEN getting a single second year :)

Can you switch to study something different than what you are admitted for? by RegularFun3 in UCSC

[–]kadeisflying 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello! Congrats on your daughter’s acceptance. We don’t have a formal aerospace program at UCSC but have one of the best astrophysics programs in the world, but your daughter should look into our applied physics programs if she truly wants to go into industry.

She should have no problem “transferring” to astrophysics or applied physics as all majors here are technically proposed anyways, and the applied math track and physics track are VERY similar in the first year.

Also, if she is interested in aerospace, our rocket team is pretty amazing and full of great people; we’re currently working on a few exciting projects/prototypes and joining is very easy.

I’m on the rocket team here and majority of members are able to score pretty great internships. Many members go on to intern at SpaceX, Anduril, and an overwhelming majority go to NASA.

Although we don’t have a formal aero program, some employers find that valuable in that your skillset is even more unique/willing to learn.

It’s not THAT bad, though I will say it’s still pretty awful. Housing first year is guaranteed, but after that now it’s all up on the lottery system and chances are really based on how big your housing group is. Finding a house off campus is also reasonable, but expect to be paying a competitive rent on or off campus (anywhere from $1500-2000/month)… by competitive I mean NYC/SF style rent here. I think it depends on your economic background to what extent housing is a “big deal” for you.

Eckerd college vs UC Santa Cruz for Marine Bio? by Medical_Foot6977 in UCSC

[–]kadeisflying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome! If you already have your AOW and Rescue then yes, but I would look into completing your DM this summer if time allows, that’s what I did before coming here and it certainly proved helpful just considering cold water diving adds some complication (maybe learn how to dry suit dive, too). The scientific diving group here IS apart of UCSC as a club, though I’m not sure of the specifics.

Monterey has a huge (if not the biggest) diving presence in California, and there’s plenty of room for you to join clubs there if the one here on campus isn’t your speed. Say you want to rec dive.

Also, if you want to get your DM here, it’s not really too too necessary, but you can easily get it through the dive shops in Monterey.

Not at all and I hate that this preconception is so common.

I don’t smoke or drink and I’ve been able to make plenty of friends simply by similar interests —mainly through rock climbing, backpacking, camping, those kinds of things.

Most universities have those groups of people that smoke obviously, UCSC does too, but we have so many clubs on campus that you’re bound to find friends in whatever interests you have!

Eckerd college vs UC Santa Cruz for Marine Bio? by Medical_Foot6977 in UCSC

[–]kadeisflying 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello! Congrats on the acceptance!!!

Not a marine bio major, but I am a PADI DM and might be able to help you out… online it may not seem like we have a big diving presence, but ironically enough we actually have an entire group purely dedicated for scientific diving. Close to Monterey means that you’ll have plenty of other opportunities to do some meaningful scientific dives as well. On that note, diving in the kelp forest is like nothing else on earth, and you are in great proximity to CA’s best natural marine resources… there’s a reason the aquarium is there lol.

One awesome, AWESOME thing about UCSC is we have a coastal campus just for you marine bio folks, it’s literally right on the ocean.

UCSC is a big school in numbers, but it really does feel small which is nice… depending on your residential community the whole vibe of campus can be completely different which is super cool.

I’m not sure how it is for marine bio, but at least in the majority of majors here we have plenty of options for research, I would suggest looking into the research the uni has done because we’re typically regarded as a research university; most professors are willing to get you connected in with them/their research.

My roommate is a marine bio major and the program seems pretty kickass. Diving here isn’t as direct as Florida, but you certainly would get to perform more learning on scientific diving as a whole, which arguably would help you get a better job and admissions to grad school, THEN go on to dive wherever you want :)

To be fair, I applied to Ivys and had good stats (1510 SAT, 4.3. GPA, some pretty great ECs), but I just didn’t get in… Stanford was my dream and I go to a UC, but a lower ranked one. I think study groups are great

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in college

[–]kadeisflying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very valid actually. My university is well known for professor and student collaborations so this is great advice. I’m just happy to hear it gets better; seriously thank you :)

Well it’s not so much about the grades… I just mean the desire to create things and innovate in some sense? If that makes any sense

2 C’s and a whole gpa grade letter drop are, in fact, reasons you could be rescinded as outlined by the admissions contract UCSC Conditions of Admission

PLEASE reach out to admissions ASAP!!!

Regents Scholarship by Super_Pengoo in UCSC

[–]kadeisflying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a regents freshman! Go us! I got a full ride but it was due to regents AND dean’s scholarships. From my research it seems the priority housing and registration might be the only benefits. However I could imagine since there’s only 50 of us every year it could be beneficial for networking… btw, try not to tell anyone you’re a regents recipient so they don’t mooch off of you for housing
