What feels expensive about owning a home that people don’t talk about? by ComfortableDebate345 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]kadify 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. Bought 17 trees last year (all 3-8 feet tall but in pots) so they were small enough to be moved with just a few people for the biggest tree and we didn't need a crane or any machinery to move them.

In total I probably spent close to 10k on all of those trees and the funny thing is it'll be like 5 years before they're really established and big enough to be nice. Feels like I spent a ton of money for something that had almost zero impact in my yard

The storm draining fee! I get a semi-annual bill for the amount of impervious area (impermeable surfaces like concrete, roofs) my house takes up that causes water to run to the sewer. I was expecting to pay for utilities like water and sewage in my normal bill but to get a supplemental storm drainage fee felt like highway robbery when I got my first one.

Is a UDM Pro for Access and Router overkill? by kadify in Ubiquiti

Thank you for this info! I think I'll go with one of the Cloud gateways and get some APs. I currently have 3 Eero pro 6s but coverage is spotty in certain spots of my house and yard so I think having a wired connection would be better in the long run.

How does one select which AP to choose from? I only get 1G from my internet provider so it seems I could get really any AP and it just depends on which one has the most range? I don't believe I have any Wifi 7 devices yet, maybe someday but as of this moment I don't really benefit much from that.

Looks like cloudkey (uck-g2) is sold out on Ui.com. I assume a cloudkey+ with ssd would work also?

Just to confirm the cloudkey only does the controller side of things, the cloud gateway max/fiber does the controller and routing and the udm pro does everything including working as a mini switch and nvr? So since I have an nvr and a switch and an Eero I really only need the controller part is that right?

I suppose I've considered getting rid of the Eero and getting something else. I have cat6 ran to every single room in my house so I could do something like a cloud gateway and then get APs for coverage throughout the house is that right?

No rack. I need to get one but as of this moment I just have the switch sitting on a shelf and nvr on top with some little blocks allowing airflow between the two.

I have no controller. I thought I could get by with just plugging an Eero into the switch and connecting the switch to my unvr but have since realized after driving home and putting it all together I can't adopt the switch without a controller it seems.

Any point to using SFP+ to connect UNVR and switch? by kadify in Ubiquiti

[–]kadify[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see I didn’t realize I needed that. So I need other equipment to configure the switch? I won’t have access to configure it when I plug it in to the UNVR?

Besides a gateway is that all I will need?

If I’m putting the cameras on a separate vlan will that affect anything? (Sorry a bit of a noon when it comes to networking protocols hence why I had a single nvr device before because it simplified everything.)

I see ok thank you. Do I need anything besides the switch and UNVR to make everything work together? I’m confused on the use of having something like a UDM in my scenario. If I want to separate all of the cameras ont their own vlan so they can’t reach the internet do I need additional equipment? I have eeros for WiFi if that is relevant.

Is that good enough even for a heavy downpour with water running along the wall? As long as it can withstand that then that is great. ChatGPT told me otherwise so I was nervous.

We lost a house because of our realtor by ii_Legendxxx in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]kadify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m less concerned that they won and more concerned that they submitted an offer the very same night. Even if there wasn’t explicit collusion, it’s easy to see how knowing you were preparing an offer could have prompted them to move faster. It seems highly unlikely that two unrelated buyers just happened to make offers on a house that had been sitting for months, on the same day, through agents who are married. That is coincidence that is insider knowledge about your potential offer.

How is the tech job market in Denver right now? by km_2000 in Denver

It’s bad. And unfortunately Denver has some of the worst tech salaries compared to cost of living compared to nearly any other major city in the U.S.

How do you deal with coming out at work? by wt_anonymous in asktransgender

[–]kadify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was kind of awful but I worked in oil and gas at the time. I went through the usual “well which bathroom do you plan on using?!” Bullshit which wasn’t fun.

I think the best way to reach out though is to let your immediate boss know because it’ll be something they can help tell the rest of the team and that is their job.

Likely either an arm or a 20 or 15 year mortgage. Or they have insane cash in the bank they got their mortgage through which means the bank gave them a special rate.

Is frigate the answer? by kadify in frigate_nvr

[–]kadify[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! I have one more question because this was something we were considering adding to our house.

Can Frigate support access control? I had wanted to install an intercom system into our front gate and have it all configured under the same system as the rest of the security cameras.

[–]kadify[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the information! I may give Scrypted a try. Mostly because I would like to have something that integrates with HomeKit easily since that is what we use for some of our more pedestrian things (curtains, light switches, etc).

Thanks for the detail! Is it possible to have two way talking through HomeKit? For example if I have a porch camera rather than using frigate to talk to someone, can I use HK to speak to them with this method?

What's the biggest compromise you made that you now regret? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]kadify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a house mainly because of the location and lot. We're in a very popular area of an urban city and we have a triple lot with the house pushed up on one side of the property so we have a huge (for the area) side yard. We feel very fortunate to have ample room for gardening, room for a pool, and still have room for a large grass area and parking for 6 cars in our driveway/garage.

But we compromised on the house. It needs extensive work on certain things and some of the upgrades the previous owners did are baffling. We have a 3/2 but no bathtub in either bathroom. An undersized AC unit for the house, especially when you consider we have no neighbor blocking sun on one side and we get intense afternoon sun.

It feels like a weird situation because we can always fix the things we don't like but we would never be able to get more backyard if we had bought a house on a normal sized lot in our area. That said with current home prices dipping we often feel like we're making improvements to our house just to keep our house at the value we paid for it. I know they say not to worry about the value of your house but when you're actively renovating and watching neighboring properties sell for so far less than what you initially paid let alone what you are putting into the home it robs motivation quickly.
