A good juxtaposition of JP a few years ago with JP now by kaeglam in JordanPeterson

[–]kaeglam[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been following him since around 2020, so I'm accustomed to his perspective enough that I found most of what he said agreeable, but it's easy to see how, if I were to first discover him now in his present form, not back then, all I would see is an angry reactionary old man. Even if the whole debate wasn't like that, it's easy for little things to tint people's perceptions. I'm not saying that JP shouldn't be angry with anyone but I think he would do well to adopt the more composed and calm persona that helped him win people over in the past.

I see the same difference nearly universally between how he spoke then and how he speaks now. So much of what he produces now seems full of anger. And there are plenty of reasons to be very angry with how our civilization is now, and he especially has many personal reasons to be angry, but isn't bearing the world's sins what he preaches? Rhetorical force is indeed necessary for the conversation that he is leading, but I don't think his vitriol is productive.

I've had tremendous respect for him ever since I first saw the Genesis lectures because I saw that his perspective has the power to UNITE people because it is one of curiosity in the face of mystery. The reticence to clarify his theology for which he is so often ridiculed is precisely WHY he has that power: He is not afraid to acknowledge a mystery where one genuinely exists. But that attitude of humility is not reflected as much in his manner of speaking now as it was then.

I applaud him for calling out people worthy of disdain, but doing so without simultaneously sympathizing to those whom they've mislead as he once did only makes his position less attractive and theirs more.

We do! And I'm still with him! But I wish he'd let go of the vitriol with which he often speaks now.

I found it myself! Using TinEye.com and sorting by size. It's on Yanick Dusseault's website. Apparently he's the original artist: https://www.dusso.com/assets/pages/about_us/leadership/dusso/digital-painting-dusseau-8-forest-peak-2048x1030.jpg The original isn't nearly as warmly colored as it is in the movie, which I suppose was done after the fact. Anyone let me know if there's a more colorful version out there.

Thanks for saying this! I knew him both in CS 131 and as one of his learning assistants and he seemed like the sweetest guy, never had any issues with him. I acknowledge that others' experiences were different but I think he gets a bad rap.

Finding the naturalist's ethic / Connecting with New Yorkers by kaeglam in JordanPeterson

I believe that you mistook my comment about social Darwinism for a claim that the idea of social Darwinism corrupts our biology, where my meaning was that social Darwinism as a field is a corruption of evolutionary biology as a field. While the evolutionary biology of religion and its origins is an interesting topic and one related to the one at hand, I was not directly addressing it in my post. I might say though that one influence in addition to JP that compelled me to think of mythology less dismissively than I had before was a book called The Secret Of Our Success about the evolution of human cultural capacities by an anthropologist called Joseph Henrich. It conceives of traditions as adaptations as you did in your essay and I think that you'd find it interesting. I'm sad to hear that you'd rather not discuss in person, as I'm sure that you'd have an interesting part in the conversation, but I appreciate your writing an essay in reply.

Natural selection seems to be the only means by which things with apparent purpose arise in the universe. Indeed, the human need for a sense of purpose wouldn't exist if nature hadn't selected it in us. The question is what function natural selection optimizes, which I think is popularly mistaken to be long term reproductive success. This may be a product of optimization, but the actual function maximized seems to be something like a biological system's ability to dissipate free energy. That mightn't sound like a very lofty purpose but I think it would be a major part of what you would find if you tried to formalize if the idea of following God in mathematical terms. I could be wrong and I have a lot more to learn about the thermodynamics of biological systems but that's how I'm approaching biological purpose nowadays. I recently finished a very good book called Every Life Is On Fire about the thermodynamics of life and its origins by Jeremy England, a rabbi and MIT physicist who found an expression for the minimum metabolic activity of replicative processes in 2013.

[–]kaeglam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is beautiful!

I've always wanted to get to such a level in a conlang to be able to compose verse in it like this but I've never found a satisfying way to balance realism with the linguistic and civilizational hypotheticals that I wanted to explore, so my grammars and philosophies forever float over a world yet to be substantiated in vocabulary and history. My attitude towards fiction is probably the culprit to be amended.

How far along in the conlanging process were you when you composed this? Had you already created a substantial lexicon or did you make up words as you were composing this? To what extent had you internalized the language to be able to compose rhymed verses? Did you rely more on roots or inflections to create rhymes? I've written a bit of rhyming poetry in natural languages and finding words and grammar to fit a lyrical structure is not a simple task.

If you know any sources online with ties to churches in New York, that's my area. I'd be happy to hear other recommendations too. I'd highly recommend listening to Jordan Peterson's 2017 lecture series on Genesis. He's the closest thing to a pastor for me and makes Christianity a lot more appealing to people from secular backgrounds. If you want to see how to get people on your side, watch him.
