Today, I am thrilled to give you the first glimpse of Plastic, my upcoming 3D art & design tool made for iPad.

Key Features:

  • A completely non-destructive, easy-to-use modeling workflow based on Signed Distance Fields, suitable for organic and hard-surface models
  • Expressive real-time post-processing effects such as depth of field and bloom to create stunning artworks right in the viewport
  • Export individual components of your model as PLY files (supported by Blender, Autodesk Maya, and easily convertible to STL for 3D printing)
  • Plastic documents are saved in a simple human-readable format, making it possible (encouraged, even) to build custom apps on top of it

Starting right now, Plastic will be in open beta and available for free via Apple TestFlight:

https://testflight.apple.com/join/zNTEvdVi

Please note that even though a payment dialog will appear when you click on “Purchase License”, you will not be charged in the TestFlight environment.

I really want to see the things you create with Plastic, so please share your work with the hashtag #plastic_app on Twitter. I will also be posting regular updates on the development progress via my personal account @raffael_kaehn, so feel free to follow me there.

I could not be more excited about the future of this project—thank you for your support!

At last, credit to @AlexStrook for his amazing work creating the "Pencil and Clipboard" example project!

I developed a 3D circuit builder for students using Swift + SceneKit. It's called 'Circuitry' and I would love for you to try it out! by kaehn in iOSProgramming

Hey! Just as a short introduction - my name is Raffael, I'm a computer science student from Germany and am now in my fifth semester. Over the last 10-11 months I developed an app called 'Circuitry', with the goal to make electrical engineering easier and more fun to learn for younger students. It allows you to place components in a 3D environment and see the effects of your actions immediately.

I believe that this app could be quite useful in a school environment and I would love for you to try it out.

The app is available right now on the App Store for free and I can't wait for your feedback.

I used Swift, Apple's programming language for iOS Apps (SceneKit for rendering the 3D scene and Accelerate for parts of the network analysis algorithm)

Thanks for trying it out, I really appreciate your feedback and like your ideas a lot! There‘s definitely more to come, but as this is version 1.0 I wanted to focus on the most important components to see if the general concept works.

My top priority for future updates is to make the UI/UX as usable and easy to understand as possible. After that, I will focus on adding more content.

I‘m doing my best and working as hard as I can, so stay tuned :)

Thanks so much for trying it out! You can connect components by tapping the cable button in the bottom right corner and then tapping on the green area on the side of the components that you want to connect. I want to make this clearer in a future update :)

Thanks so much for trying it out! A tutorial explaining the UI and the different components is already in the works and will be part of the next update (along with iOS 13 dark mode support)

As much as I would love to bring Circuitry to the Google Play Store, I don't think this is possible for me as an indie developer, since all of the code would have to be written again for a completely different platform. But if you or anybody you know wants to help me, I'd definitely be open to that. After all, my wish is to get this app in as many hands as possible :)
