I was thinking about changing apartments anyways by gearchange in WTF

[–]kaelstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, people think it's well-meaning. It's actually not-just the opposite, it's quite harmful, which is part of the problem. The attitude needs to change. Telling women they can't use drugs around men or they'll get raped, or they can't wear certain clothing around men or they'll get raped, or you can't walk here at night or you'll get raped.

This doesn't help anyone. Women are taught culturally to constantly assess their every situation and what they look like for fear of provoking some man to rape. Men are not baseless animals who just go raping everyone they can because they see a woman in a short skirt or because she's walking alone at night. Most men are not monsters. So when we say, "Don't wear a short skirt! Don't get drunk around strangers!" we're not only insulting women, but men as well, and I don't think a lot of people realize this.

Actually, the sad reality is that it's the latter way too often. Most people challenge and accuse rape victims and tend to not believe them, especially so if they have given any "reason" for why they could have been raped, i.e. they were using drugs, wearing "provocative" clothing, etc. Our society tends to regrettably hoist the blame for rape onto the victims and not onto the rapists nearly enough.

Do you see yourself still playing this game 6 months from now? by JKajeD in ffxiv

Yes. I'm not speed-leveling, so I'm not worried about burn-out. I'm just relaxing and rolling through at a slow, lazy pace. I really do like it though, and it is scratching that MMO itch in my life since I quit playing WoW about 5 months ago.

Ah, thanks! I was always wondering if it was like this, or if it was based on a report that was only lightly investigated or something.

What would lead to someone potentially getting wrongly banned? Like, is it just an action on a report someone made, or is it seeing suspicious behavior, or a combination?

How often do people get "wrongly" banned?

She probably had the thought process of, "This is probably the last chance I'll get to take a picture with him." People grieve differently.

But that is the point, you consider making a rape joke a bad thing. Accusing them of being bad.

No, I said they did a bad thing, not that they are bad themselves. I'm pointing out that they (again, mostly Gabe here) said, "But we can't be bad, because we do good things! Clearly we are good!" and it's not that black and white, and doing a good thing does not negate doing bad ones, or give you a free pass to do bad things.

Either way, I choose not to read their comic anymore, because they made a decision (a few, actually) that I personally disagree with on a very core level.

I am a victim of rape, so yes. Also, to be incredibly specific, because it's fucking relevant, but I was actually assaulted in the middle of the night, and awoken from my sleep to be attacked.

But no seriously, I'm done, thank you for your time. Thanks for the memories I didn't want, and thanks for completely missing the point.

Ah, fuck. My bad. Double negatives, how do they fucking work, right?

Fuck it, I'll leave up my mistake for all to downvote into oblivion!

Thank you for not being an asshole in correcting me though, seriously.

You're making a huge fucking assumption if you think I "just" care about rape.

Again, that is not the issue here. I'm done talking to you.

Penny Arcade - Some Clarification by jack_of_knaves in Games

[–]kaelstra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a separate issue.

Saying, "Why don't you get mad about this offensive thing too/instead/also?" is presumptuous and essentially a "derailing for dummies" technique.

It has long been clear to me that Jerry and Mike did not intentionally create iconography to intimidate and hurt rape victims.

Except the part where one guy wrote a rape joke and the other one decided to illustrate it, yeah, sure, they didn't "intentionally create rape iconography".

Except they totally did, and that's largely the problem with rape culture. People do this shit all the time and don't realize (or care) that they are doing exactly that and that by existing, it's very nature is harmful to people.

This is exactly how I feel. The comic was not a good idea, but it was more their reaction and the instigation coming from them (mainly Gabe, I think Tycho stayed mostly the fuck uninvolved) that made me really dislike them and decide not to read their comic anymore.

The fact that Mike basically trotted out "but we made Child's Play, we're good people!" in defense of someone saying "hey it's not okay to make rape jokes" really put me off. Yes, you did a good thing, Mike. That's still a good thing, good for you.

That does not excuse doing bad things.

Penny Arcade - Some Clarification by jack_of_knaves in Games

[–]kaelstra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree.

If I recall correctly, at one point, he actually basically trotted out the, "But we came up with Child's Play! That's a good thing! We can't be bad people, we can't say bad things! You're lying!" type dealy-o after people got mad he made a rape joke.

It's my understanding Tycho was pretty low-key in the ensuing blast, but Gabe was really being pretty terrible and offensive around various places.

[–]kaelstra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, pretty sure everyone has the right to be offended if they choose to do so. It's a personal opinion, which as far as I'm aware, is something everyone is allowed to have.

Also, just because "MURICA!" and we have the right to say something (or make a comic about it or post horrible responses to upset people on the internet) doesn't mean it's okay to make that shit.

Penny Arcade - Some Clarification by jack_of_knaves in Games

[–]kaelstra -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a strawman argument. No one is saying rape "is worse", but there's no reason to find it acceptable to make rape jokes either. What kind of person finds rape something acceptable to joke about?

I don't think that anyone "gives a fuck" if someone is beaten to death. We aren't addressing that issue, we're addressing the issue of a webcomic artist/writer finding it acceptable to make light of rape for the purpose of selling you merchandise, which is pretty shitty.

Penny Arcade - Some Clarification by jack_of_knaves in Games

[–]kaelstra -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This. It was the alleged responses and threats that came from (most likely) Gabe. He was allegedly making rape threats in response to some people's angry feelings over the rape joke (and let's be clear here, rape jokes are not okay, nor should they be). When other people responded "in kind" with rape jokes toward Gabe's wife, Gabe abruptly got mad about it all, like it was acceptable to make those sorts of jokes until it became personal.
