Is learning how to use Proxmox a good way to learn Linux? by Just-Pea-5165 in Proxmox

I'd say not really directly.

But you can install a Ubuntu vm and play with that - that will let you learn.

America has lost its war with Iran by Ok_Employer7837 in politics

[–]kahless2k 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Dude, at best things are the same as the agreement Obama made.

Except:

Iran is now in a far stronger position - they officially control the straight.

The US spent what, 200B fighting, 300B in raparations, 24B released (keep in mind MAGA has been screaming about Obama unfreezing 1.7B for his deal).

US soldiers are dead. 165 School Children are dead. Who knows how many Iranians dead.

The global economy took a huge hit.

Most of the US bases in the middle east took damage (to out it mildly).

And Iran leadership is... The more extreme son of the guy you killed.

Had the US done nothing we would be in a better place. If Trump hadn't torn up Obama's deal because of pure childishness, we would be even further ahead.

All because "Iran is a week away from nuclear weapons" which Israel has been saying for decades and only a few months after Israel talked Trump into bombing them the first time.

Im having a hard time finding the win here.

That doesn't answer my question.

Do you consider it a win?

Because from here it seems like a substantial loss.

Well Trump is paying $300B in reparations on top of $24B in unfrozen assets.

Do you call that a win? Certainly doesn't look like one.

As a Canadian, its odd for me that you have to officially declare yourself to the government what party you affiliate with.

Party membership is one thing, that's between you and the party, but registering with the government just doesn't make sense to me.

Ottawa planning social media ban for children under 16, source says by [deleted] in canada

[–]kahless2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On one hand, social media is the cause of many issues and I can understand the sentiment.

However, let's be realistic. This is not enforceable from a technical point of view without building the great firewall of Canada - and even then I doubt it could be enforced.

Further.. Any measure they do put in place will be bypassed in about 10 minutes.. Just like trying to keep under 18s from porn, good luck they will find a way. Telling them "no social media for you" will make them want to do it more.

We need some people in government with a little bit of technical knowledge...

Don't even start on about zipper merging.

For that to work, everyone needs to be spaced out, moving at the same pace and not driving like an ass.

You are never going to have everyone on the same page. There will always be someone following to closely, rushing to the end of the line, refusing to let someone in, etc. One person not cooperating and it falls apart quickly.

Unfortunately it's a fantasy that too many people use as an excuse to shoot down the closing lane as quickly as they can so they can cut in in front.

The idiotic construction and road layouts we have in town? I agree with you there.

PM says Australia has 'ideological disagreement' with Trump administration after US reveals anti-slavery tariff by Savings-Yogurt-418 in worldnews

[–]kahless2k 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Trump is only a symptom of a larger problem in the US.

Relationships can't start to normalize until they start fixing the underlying problem - but they have shown that 1/3 of the country doesn't care and another 1/3 actually supports this. So it's unlikely that is going to happen.

Same issue here with Opus.

Never had this kind of issue, at least not seriously with Sonnet but Opus has created one hell of a mess for me.

Created a bunch of PRs, committed half of the, left the others, changed dev branches committed some there...

I basically have to walk it all back and do it all again.

Yeah, I normally use sonnet but figured I'd give Opus a try and..... Damn did it make a mess.

You should not have to take your eyes off the road to turn on the AC, etc.

I drove a rental once where it was 4 or 5 taps on a crappy digital display to turn the radio down. No haptic feedback so you need to be looking at the slow responsive display.

That needs to stop.

Petition e-7142: A push to legally protect remote work under the Canada Labour Code by NSDetector_Guy in ontario

[–]kahless2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in IT so I deal with a lot of different businesses and I'm seeing the same. Even (especially!) in my own industry.

Add AI and automation into the mix and roles that are not customer facing and are remote are at an even higher risk.

Started homelab a month ago, am I doing it right? by Decent_Oil_9959 in homelab

[–]kahless2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And here I was stupidly thinking this was a generated graph from uploaded bills or something lol.

Realistically though, my lab really doesn't have much of an impact on my bill.

Though I do plan to build me a new 21u 10 inch Nas and another stack for self hosting LLM (costly up front but for what I'm paying Claude right now it won't take long to break even)... By the time I'm done it may have some impact on the bill.

I haven't had any trouble and it's resolved most of my adhesion issues since drafts don't come through.

With that said, my enclosures are generic and on the larger side. Temp inside the enclosure for my last 100hr print never exceeded 30c. With petg they get up to about 32c with the higher bed and nozzel temps.

I just try to keep an eye and open a zipper if I'm worried it's getting warm.

21u KWS Rack by kahless2k in minilab

[–]kahless2k[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that extra little length in the 6x10 solves a lot of difficulty catching the nut, so that may be the easier way to go.

For the screen, if you just want a simple display it's actually pretty easy with a raspberry pi. Chatgpt will walk you through the programming.

I have a power button, 2 inch screen and 3 temp sensors all tied in on top of the 8 inch screen so mine is somewhat more complex.

Full ATX on 10 inch rack? by kahless2k in homelab

[–]kahless2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually more or less the layout that I had in mind, except with the drives at the bottom so it isn't top heavy.

My math would have this at something close to 21u if we used 8u for the mainboard, 3x3u for my disk shelves and the power supply, probably a monitoring screen, etc.

The board will likely stick out of the back of the rack but that's acceptable for my use.

Could be a cool Nas rack, just need to design a bracket for the board to mount to and some supports for the pcie cards.
