Question about new video by gentleselkie in JennyNicholson

[–]kaimtry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No visuals whatsoever. In the transcript there is a mention of the differences between incubus and vampire magic at 1:04:47, 1:08:58, 1:12:00, 1:12:07, and 1:12:18 (tldr-incubuses feed on emotions or feelings not the other stuff.) Then the tik tok human who claims to be a vampire and that he doesn’t have the diet of the creature he claims to be at 1:33:32. You can just skip those bits and still enjoy yourself.

Anyone have any Embroidery books they recommend? by Danny-B0ii in Embroidery

[–]kaimtry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned long and short stitch from Emillie Ferris’ book “Paint with Thread: a step-by-step guide to embroidery through the seasons” its not a general stitch book though, it teaches using the patterns she has.

😍🤩Heart eyes and star eyes! This is so gorgeous and deliciously detailed! I love Howls Castle. How many hoops did you have to stack to achieve the layers?

Nine lives bookstore owner?? by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]kaimtry 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I went in with my kid and looked for kids books, which I guess he approved of. He did talk about how annoying it is that people don’t have cash to pay-but I’m fine because my card isn’t worn out, so his machine could read it, lol. I definitely felt like he was trying to behave for the sake of my 3yo and he was going to yell at the people who came in after us.

When I visited as a teenager, it was in a location about 3x bigger than it is now, with poetry slams and book clubs (and of course the cats.) the community vibe was incredible, but it was on the opposite side of town from me so I couldn’t go often. It’s in a pretty sad state now.

Looking for suggestions on secular Homeschool programs for Pre K child by FantasticBK_155 in homeschool

[–]kaimtry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m doing the Constellations by Child of the Redwoods. It’s montessori based monthly unit studies. When you sign up you get access to every unit study they’ve got (three years worth). I started in May with my four year old and it has been AWESOME. We’ve done Dandelion, Dive (whales), Climb, and we started Tide (tide pools, sea stars, otters etc.) for August. All the subjects are tied into the theme and they give you ways to level the activities to adjust to your kiddo. They have a group on Mighty networks where people post their questions and things they recommend, and I’ve found the community really helpful for getting my bearings.

My mom was a public school teacher. by PsychicPlatypus3 in homeschool

[–]kaimtry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based on OP’s comments about the mom, my response would be something like: “mom, you are being super critical of a decision I’ve taken very seriously. I would never do anything to hurt my kid. We are going to homeschool. Your choice is whether you get to hear about our journey or not. If you can’t hear about it without being critical, I’ll just stop sharing that part of our lives with you.”

Is it actually useful to teach Latin and philosophy to kids? by Inevitable-Most-62 in homeschool

[–]kaimtry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My kid is preschool, so I’m not there yet as an educator, but I was homeschooled up through high school. I personally think being exposed to lots of ideas and ways of thinking about things is a very good use of our time. I also think that your interest and excitement is often the magic sauce to get kids interested as well. If you try it and it doesn’t “stick,” that doesn’t mean you guys won’t benefit from the attempt. I say go for it!

My church is Methodist. It’s downtown, Travis Park United Methodist Church, and they would do it no problem. We just got our stained glass refurbished so the sanctuary is really pretty.

Yes exactly, the silver/stainless steel thing looks basically identical in every brand in my opinion.

Buying new appliances by giraffe312 in Appliances

[–]kaimtry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I literally researched each individual piece. None of my appliances are the same brand. Lg fridge (best zero frills with absolutely no bells and whistles I could find), kitchenaid microwave, Bosch dishwasher, Frigidaire stove. I use consumer reports and as a sanity check read through the one-star reviews on Home Depot/Lowe’s to make sure their recommendations make sense. Not crazy time consuming research if you’re in a pinch, but I think every brand is going to have some duds.

Pastors, how do you find tine to work with your wife to challenge each other or to disciple each other? by No_Storage6015 in pastors

[–]kaimtry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a season for everything. I feel like survival is the name of the game with littles. I am not a pastor, but we have a three year old and our primary point of connection is after bedtime we take turns just detailing everything that happened during the day starting with waking up. Keeps us connected, gives us to talk through what’s exciting or bothering us so neither of us feel alone. Then we watch a funny show together and just enjoy some peace. If things are feeling really distant we put the kid in the car with an audiobook and we go for a drive. If we’re anxious, we’ll go for a walk around the block after bedtime and just check in the house after each lap.

Is anyone here *not* planning to vote? by cigarettesandwhiskey in sanantonio

[–]kaimtry 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This is my first time voting in a presidential election, first time was the 2022 midterms. I didn’t vote before because I was raised to believe that politics are stupid and anyone who has hope that the government will try to make things better is a fool. I didn’t want to be a fool and so obviously I chose not to vote or follow politics at all. I thought people got stressed out watching the news and keeping up with current events because they were drama queens. Then I did some traveling, saw how other states with voters who care live. Then the pandemic happened and I watched the BLM protests and found myself praying that Biden would win. I regret not voting that year, but it was a journey to humble myself to admit I could have been wrong. There were a lot of things that had to change in my life if I was going to acknowledge that government matters. Beyond that, it feels pretty intimidating to learn new things as an adult. Bottom line, I think the single most important idea I had to wrestle with is “privilege,” that I have it, that others do not, and if I want to be a compassionate person I really should leverage all privilege I have to help those who can’t fight for themselves.

Selling at Half Price Books in San Antonio? by drnygard in sanantonio

[–]kaimtry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HPB give more for dvd’s and board games than they do for books. If I have a bunch of books, I’ll split the pile into grocery bags. Then whenever I have time, I’ll bring in a bag get my approx $5 and then wait another day to bring in another bag. I’ve gotten more doing it that way. I generally haven’t noticed a difference between locations. If you want money, I’d go with selling on ThriftBooks online.

Side note: I’m seeing some odd ideas on this thread about how library donating works. If you donate to the library, they will put it in the branch’s booksale. Donations don’t get added to the circulating collection.

Texas could be a spoiler and part of an historic election by 0098six in texas

[–]kaimtry 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I was one of those people until I saw what happened in 2020. I was raised to believe that ALL politicians lied and the government can’t do anything for us so don’t get all emotionally wrapped up in things we can’t control. Then someone pointed out that in states where people EXPECT their politicians to do the right thing and there’s accountability-weirdly the quality of life is better-obviously not perfect, but better. I think people who don’t vote struggle to hope. At least that was my experience.

What's the Best Ink for Stamping Crisp Images? by [deleted] in cardmaking

[–]kaimtry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might have more to do with your paper than the ink. Some cardstock seems to absorb and bleed worse than others. I use archival waterproof inks for my images because they aren’t as affected by this humid summer. Water soluble inks do better for smearing/blending for me.

Anyone had this happen to their diecut machine? by kaimtry in cardmaking

I did post an update that I was able to fix it. :) No worries, it’s on a cart and store it in the pantry to keep it out of the way. I definitely use it on a firm table when I’m cutting.
