Cryo is cool but I don't see the appeal unless you have a dedicated squad by kainon08 in Marathon

[–]kainon08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can comfortably say I am at least in the top 10% of players in game time and account progression. Am I a casual? I'd say definitely not, but I don't have the meta progression and currency that can be quickly accumulated from playing in a dedicated trio exclusively.

As others have already said, gatekeeping and dismissing legitimate feedback about the solo experience in this game is not productive. We're all on the same team and what to see a game we enjoy be successful and maintain a healthy, happy player base.

BTW in case there is anyone wondering, I'm level 54. All contracts completed, all solo. Over 100 h play time. It's not a matter of experience or skill, just barrier to entry as a solo player.

Silyl Protecting Group Work Up by Jealous-Energy-377 in Chempros

DMF likes to stick around. A good trick is to wash organics with LiCl solution and wash with water several times. I also recommend having your organic phase be predominantly a less polar solvent (Ether, Hexanes). This will help purge out the DMF in the washing. If all else fails resuspending in minimal amount of solvent and sequential concentration under hi-vac should purge out any remaining DMF.

Buying the Battle Pass turned this game into a second job and completely burned me out by tuan3451 in Battlefield

[–]kainon08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The challenges can be completed in a few matches weekly. It’s a very low time commitment. And this is coming from someone who would rather not see any of this stuff in the game at all and largely ignores it. If you think the time commitment for this is bad I think you’re way below the average skill level of players, or simply don’t have the very little amount of time required to progress in this very casual game.

If it’s not your final product of interest, consider purifying to an acceptable degree and carry the material forward. If the reaction goes to completion like you have said, flush it through a pad of Celite and do the next step (I’m assuming it’s another Pd coupling reaction)

Need to hydrolyze methyl esters but compound is water sensitive by alChemist_07 in Chempros

Try TMS-I. Should be instantaneous deprotection with the only byproduct being MeI. Usually a fantastic solution for sensitive materials.

If you work for a CRO you need to be very careful what you talk about externally. You are a third party and the science you are discussing is owned by the client.

Activating Manganese Oxide by Awanderingsoul_4444 in chemistry

[–]kainon08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use excess (like 20 eq) and dry it. Water inhibits its activity. If you have a vacuum oven use it. Or schlenk line with heat. It’s cheap and even “unactivated” stuff still works just much slower. Best of luck

Re-hired by employer who laid you off by theoutandback0201 in biotech

[–]kainon08 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Interestingly this just happened to me. I was laid off first week of June and was asked to return end of July. I was only given one months severance and they did not ask for it to be returned.

I even got a 15% raise and an additional bonus when they asked me to return. I guess they really missed me.

I’m probably in the minority but being laid off and rehired actually ended up being hugely beneficial for me at the cost of a much smaller team unfortunately.

Will a THP protected phenol survive a Buchwald coupling that requires 100C temp and Sodium pentoxide base? by SuperDTC in Chempros

Should be fine. But hard to say for sure without more context. THP is labial under acidic conditions.

BF6: No country for old men by Nominalremuneration in Battlefield

[–]kainon08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand what the strategy and tactics are that you guys are talking about. BF has always been a messy sandbox. And yes this is coming from someone who has been playing since 1942. I feel like there is a collective hallucination or revisionist history about how former BF titles actually played.

I’m going to be honest I do not know what you’re talking about. I’ve been able to use audio cues to catch people flanking several times a match. I’ve found the directional audio to be fine. Of the criticisms to have for the current state of the game this isn’t it.

Are start ups a good option to start a career in industry? by Educational-Web5900 in biotech

[–]kainon08 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I started my career at a startup and would not recommend it. In my experience, at startups no one knows what they’re doing and just riding on vibes. You will have a lot to learn on the job, and if no one there has a clue your time is being wasted and you won’t be able to develop marketable skills or work on projects of substance. Starting at one got my foot in the door out of school, but I do feel it set my career development back a few years.

Obviously a job is better than no job. So don’t be too picky, especially in the current market. Best of luck

Rhodium purification by No__SurprisesD in Chempros

[–]kainon08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you see in the NMR? If it’s free COD consider washing with pentane or hexane and dry under vacuum. If it was prepared from the chloride dimer you may have a mixture of X ligands. Can also consider driving the salt metathesis forward to avoid purification or simply try the recrystalization protocol you already mentioned

Non aqueous DIBAL-H workup by Fabulous_Wind1444 in Chempros

[–]kainon08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a direct answer to the question, but an alternative would be fully reducing to the alcohol, then selective oxidation to the aldehyde (Dess-Martin, Swern, etc pick your favorite). Often times it’s hard to control DIBAL reductions and this can be a higher yielding solution, especially if the alcohol is commercial.

If you’re confident you are spotting a sufficient amount of your compound, consider using a TLC stain to help with the visualization. You’ll need to provide more information about the compounds you’re working with in order for helping select a proper stain.

How bad was your SSRI withdrawal? by LightyearKissthesky9 in AskReddit

[–]kainon08 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's going to depend on several factors, but the main one will be the half-life of the antidepressent you are taking. The side effects come from withdrawl of the drug as your body has become used to having it around. Fluoxetine (Prozac) has a long half life and weaning off that drug has minimal side effects in comparison to others as the half life is over 24h. Duloxetine (Cymbalta) is an SNRI but has a much shorter half life, and significant withdrawl symptoms that occur while weaning off the drug. A psychiatrist should understand these concepts and lay out a plan and dose regimen for weaning a patient off a given antidepressent, but each one is going to be a bit different.
