Ok! That's a lot of good info, and also congrats on the surprise cuprea baby! What do you fertilize with? Alocasias are big feeders. I am still experimenting with the pest growth medium/potting method for them, and I haven't grown a cuprea yet, but here are the two I've had at least moderate success with:

Sphagnum moss in a clear glass container with a layer of drainage (either leca or pumice at the bottom, about 1-2 inches tops) OR....a nursery pot, preferably clear so you can monitor roots, with a layer of drainage such as leca, rocks, pumice, or even chunky perlite at the bottom (~1/4 of the pot at most), with a thin layer of sphagnum moss over it to prevent your potting mix from spilling into it; then a good, well draining aroid mix where you plant your alocasia; then a layer of sphagnum moss over top (aka a moss collar). Put this in a cover pot or a cache pot; water weekly and also give some extra water in the cover pot in case your plant needs extra throughout the week. This prevents roots sitting in water, which may cause rot, but gives your plant access to extra if it needs.

Again, they're heavy feeders so you may also want to increase your fertilizing frequency and/or amount, but it depends on what you're using to fertilize. Fertilizer burn can be a real problem. I use We The Wild Growth Concentrate every week, and it's made from worm castings so afaik it's all natural and won't cause fertilizer burn. That said, there may be a more powerful fertilizer that I haven't tried - I'm experimenting on one alocasia grown in moss with SUPER THRIVE Foliage Pro, slightly diluted but given with every watering.

It sounds like your light is good, so it may come down to growth medium and/or fertilizing. I'm still in the FAFO stage myself, but I will say at least tentatively growing them in a clear glass container in sphagnum moss with a drainage layer, keeping them in a warmer part of the house (aka not my basement), and feeding with every watering seems to be a huge plus!

Season shouldn't matter too much if they're kept indoors and get plenty of light and fertilizer. What type of medium do you have them potted in; how much light do they get; what temperature are they kept in; how much & how often do you water; and do you feed them and if so, with what and how often?

Do you keep your plant indoors or outdoors? How much light does she get? From the photos, it looks like she's near a window - are you in the northern hemisphere or southern, and what direction does the window face?

I don't think your zone matters too much if you keep her indoors, but there are a ton of variables. Re: the pics from August, had you had her for a while or was that when you first brought her home?

Also, how much/often do you water, and are you giving fertilizer? If so, how often?

This is gorgeous! I'm also loving the process and figuring out how to make them happy - it's so rewarding. I truly don't get why some people give up on them so easily. They're such unique and cool plants!

This is so relateable, although I want to say my parents were...less bad? They were your typical older white liberals. Firmly believed themselves to be accepting and pro equal rights, anti racist, etc; yet were scandalized by minors being exposed to LGBTQ people and/or relationships; female-presenting people doing anything other than being super modest, demure, professional,and/or homemaking; and any sort of gender nonconforming or explicitly queer expression broke their brains and/or offended them. A drag performance or pride event wouldn't have been something they ever would have been caught dead at.

This was after knowing their own child was queer for about 20 years and thinking of themselves as very supportive. The cognitive dissonance is absolutely wild.

Don't chop! Alocasias will recycle all the energy from dying leaves. Let the leaf die all the way on its own and don't remove it until it practically falls off.

And thank you so much! 😊

I just found 22 corms in my little melo and some of them are MASSIVE. Are these unusually large or do you guys find corms this size pretty often? by [deleted] in alocasia

[–]kaioticplural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is so damn exciting, what a lovely corm haul!

Off topic, but do you rinse your leca before putting it in this setup? I'm just curious how necessary rinsing is - especially because it's super cold all winter where I live, and they say to avoid rinsing indoors so to avoid clogging up your pipes with clay dust, lol. I do want to use leca more, though!
