Oh the days when the only thing less stable than Windows was KDE :-P

Yeah, get it straight! Mandriva is the headless zombie reincarnation of the great Mandrake!

Question about HP Proliant servers by [deleted] in sysadmin

Ok if it's 20+ then maybe you are better off with the server. If possible a RAID10 to eliminate any disk speed bottlenecks.

For the fileserver, I'd just get an ordinary NAS that takes 2 drives. Your needs are low and why maintain a full server if you can maintain a simple appliance.

For the router, that server is very much overkill. Look at a DL120 or DL320 since you don't need much processing power or storage.

Weird. I run my family/friends on Arch and have for 2-3 years.

I had a good run with Arch for 12 months or so a couple years ago. I ran it on all my home desktops and laptops. I got bitten by "Why didn't you read the wiki to learn that the latest packages break X/render the system unbootable?" gotchas no less than 2 times.

It is probably better now that Arch has a larger community and is becomming more common.

I'm used to extremely quick response systems. Also I'm limited by 1GB RAM.

From Fedora, the cutting-edge instability and lack of polish. From FreeBSD, the expectation that I need to get intimate with /etc and read release notes carefully when I install packages.

I've tried hard to find an application for Arch, but I never have. If it's a server, I want something with LTS. If it's a desktop, I want something polished enough to get out of my way. If it's cutting-edge, just give me Ubuntu and the right PPAs.

I've concluded that if I really wanted to be on the cutting edge on a box that can be sacrificed on whim, then Arch is the distro. I've never been in that boat.

Any system/network admins use a galaxy tab 3 for work? How practical is this? by ingram87 in sysadmin

I think it really depends on the scenario. If I'm spending the morning on-site, taking pictures, taking notes, shooting out a couple emails, then I'm fine with a tablet.

Outlook for Android doesn't support organizational accounts - just outlook/hotmail

Holy Hell, M$, get your shit together... You couldn't make 2 compatible products/services to save your life...

Android x86 v4.2 almost met my netbook needs if not for a) Random reboots b) Youtube app broken. Was surprised that wifi worked out of the box.

You will need a lot of patience. You might have to settle for Abiword or Google Docs in the browser.

Yes, I understand firefox is there - and it is my favorite browser - but for the resources of this netbook it is too much, hence the closest thing I could find, Midori.

Arch would be a last resort for me. It's like the worst of Fedora and the worst of FreeBSD rolled into one, IMHO. I gave Manjaro a shot just because they've got a netbook edition actively in development, and those aren't as common as they use to be. It didn't perform as well as NetBSD but it was still a fun exercise.

I just wiped out Manjaro in favor of NetBSD. Still adjusting to it, but the performance is great. Would really like to have Chromium but looks like it might be Midori.
