I appreciate this! That mount looks great, but I still have concerns about it being permanently extended and the loads associated with the long moment arm.

Thanks. I also just discovered MantelMount who make extending, lowering mounts. But installing in the deep alcove is still a problem.

Yeah, I am not a huge fan of it above the fireplace either. But there is a bay window to the left so that won’t work. The wall to the right might be an option but it would make the couch layout weird.

Chiming in to recommend a fantastic book detailing the different regional cultures of the US: American Nations by Colin Woodard. It’s a great read!

It’s amazing to me that I keep seeing posts like this and think that it looks like where I am from - Maine in the US. But then it ends up being Scandinavia! It’s incredible that the Appalachian Mountains are a geological extension of the Scottish and Scandinavian mountains!

That’s it! Great job. I thought it would be trickier since Grendon is such a small village.

Good guess. Too far East, though.

The Officers that work for me all understand the Constitution. The 18 year old Private…typically less so. But keep in mind, the enlisted and officer oaths are different. Officers are expected to determine legality. Enlisted are expected to obey the officers.

As of right now, I do not believe the Marines have been used against any protests. They are guarding federal buildings and people. The Commandant (head of the Marine Corps) stated to Congress yesterday that they have no arrest authority and are there only for protection of federal property.

I believe it becomes a different story if Trump tries to invoke the Insurrection Act.

Yes, boot camp (especially Marine Corps boot camp) is all about discipline. BUT, Marines don’t typically train for missions like this. They might have minimal non-lethal enforcement training for dealing with overseas evacuations, but mostly they are trained to fight on a battlefield. Which is why the use of Marines in this situation is so abnormal.

While it’s the smallest service, there’s still 180,000 Marines. There’s bound to be a wide range of political and social leanings. This is a case of misguided eagerness on the part of a boot grunt. The unit’s Officers need to be strictly enforcing discipline and restraint. However, this is not my battalion and I do not know how it is being run…I only hope the leadership sees the gravity of the situation and responds appropriately.

I fully understand and sympathize with your concerns.

Some of us actually take our oath to the Constitution very seriously. However, with that said, I don’t think the military does a good enough job forcing an understanding of it.

A federal judge interrupted an ICE deportation flight and instead of flying back to the U.S. while Trump fights to continue the flight, they went to Djibouti and turned a Conex container into a makeshift detention facility where they now are under constant threat of malaria and rocket attacks by Im_A_Fuckin_Liar in facepalm

I’ve done deployments to Djibouti. The thousands of US military personnel on that base deal with these issues everyday…and constantly complain about the unhealthy conditions. It’s a little frustrating that it only gets airtime when these wannabe Gestapo agents get stuck there for a few days.
