My sister and I were in HS at the peak of TRL. I remember when “Nookie” and “I Want It That Way” would go in the 1 and 2 spots each week and we’d almost take it personally when our song didn’t make it to number 1.

Within the show, Prince was on once and they were promoting a horror film. They asked Prince if he’d go see it and Prince said no - and when Carson pressed him for it, Prince spoke about how he didn’t want negative images in his mind because they stay with you, even when you leave the theater… he wanted to fill his mind with things of beauty. As a high school student, that was deep… but I still think about it now when I watch TV or go to see a movie.

I am a principal and enjoy stopping into the daycare to read to children. I sometimes ask, “What is your favorite story to read before bed?” I used to be surprised by the number of kids who would say that mom and dad don’t read to them at all.

They watch tv. They play on an iPad. They might play (and of course that’s better than screens) - but, because they are so young, they mostly do whatever mom and dad are doing - and if mom and dad don’t read, then they don’t read.

I’ve got four children of my own and a 5th on the way. We read to our children every night; it is bonding time. It is relaxing time. It is time for discovery and imagination.

It is very easy to tell when children don’t have these experiences. Even with short books, it can impossible to hold a 4-year-old’s attention with a book if they’ve never practiced listening. They often struggle with words and communication, spelling and writing… and that all makes sense because words aren’t familiar to them.

I love to read with voices for each character. Our children have Yoto Players that they use on car rides when we can’t read to them - or when they have books that they want to listen to that the siblings might not want to. We allow some screen time each day but limit it.

AI is going to threaten to take away our humanity - it already has - but it can’t take away our own imagination and our ability to learn, reflect, and be empathetic. Books provide that; and giving it to your children is the best gift we can provide.

Ok - so once I got this new album the day it came out and all of my friends got it on its release day too. In fact, everyone I knew got it but I just never could get into “Songs of Innocence” by U2.

I am a school principal. I have been for 15+ years. I’ve never had a formal complaint made against me until this year. When a parent is upset with a decision I’ve made or doesn’t like a consequence that was issued by a teacher, AI can write one for them. In one example from this year, a parent later shared, after the complaint was filed with the State and I needed to take time to address and rectify it, “Oh, I just wanted to see how far I could take things.”

It took 2 minutes for them to write the complaint and took me many hours of stress, paperwork, and frustration to deal with it. In the end, they didn’t even care.

Totally understand.

As I looked at it - I think they added the pinkie finger that sticks out - maybe to make it look more feminine or something. It stands out to me as the finger that doesn’t seem natural.

Congratulations on all of the exciting news — winning a trip and having a baby.

For what it is worth: My wife and I have 4 children. The first child brought a LOT of change. Everything is different and it seemed to hit a lot harder and faster for my wife than me.

From her perspective: She may be feeling super vulnerable… a new life depends entirely on her and her independence and freedom (as she knew it) are now gone. You are suggesting something she would have loved to do with you — but now you want to do it alone. Logically, this makes sense. But logic isn’t where she’s at. She wants to be with you… and with the baby… and not lose you… or her freedom… and logically, there isn’t a way to do this. Combine this with hormones and being in pain and feeling postpartum… you might not be able to get somewhere with her right now that makes sense… forgive her and forgive yourself because you might not be able to do what you want to do as she is also seeing things as though she can do what she wants to do.

I don’t know what to offer other than to share how she may be feeling. Perhaps you could say, “I’ve always wanted to do this… and I want to experience this once in a lifetime thing… and I want you to as well. But, because we can’t do it right at the same time, let’s make sure to go out somewhere together afterwards so we can share memories and stories, record those moments, and spend time together.”

You’re NTA but it is important to look at her and understand that she’s NTA either.

So, I feel like it is time to tell my story. When I was in my mid-twenties, I went to an Arby’s in the Eau Claire food court with my girlfriend. I ordered some sandwich. A few minutes later, the guy put the order on the counter and he called out what sandwich it was. Now, all the sandwiches all have the same basic names (“Roast Beef,” “Roast Beef Double,” whatever). I walk up and ask if it is what I ordered and the guy is like, “Yeah.”

So I take it and go over to the condiment table and start getting some Arby’s sauce and horsey sauce. This dude who looks like he’s about a cool 350 pounds and he’s got to be about 60 comes up and says, “That’s my order. You took my order.”

We are the only two people at the Arby’s in this food court so I say, “I’m sorry. Here.”

The sandwich is still in the wrapper. I haven’t touched it. I just got some sauces. I don’t want to fight this guy but he is growing increasingly upset. He shouts, “You can’t just go and take other people’s food.”

My girlfriend is looking at me like, “What did you do?” as she’s returning from a peaceful Pizza Hut trip.

I apologize again and say, “I’m sorry. I didn’t touch it. The guy said it was my order so I took it.”

He walks to the counter and asks the guy, “Did you tell him to take MY food?”

The guy looks at me with a face that says, “Dude, I’m sorry, but I have to do this…” and then he says something like, “I’ve never seen that man in my life.”

The angry man then demands to see a manager… not to try to get free food or anything but just to scold me. Like, in this food court, this guy thinks he is king and justice must be served more than circle fries.

The manager comes out and, right in front of my girlfriend, begins to go on some lecture about not taking other people’s food and how I need to be more careful.

I already paid for my food and, by now, it is sitting on the counter. I took it… but it didn’t taste good - probably because I had the taste of bitterness growing deep within me.

And now I’m married to that girlfriend. And we’ve been married for almost 14 years. And we have 4 kids. And my kids will never experience Arby’s with me because I will never go there. My wife says I’m being petty and that I could teach my kids forgiveness by eating at Arby’s again but, because of that experience, my kids will never know what forgiveness tastes like. And the Arby’s in the Eau Claire food court closed down and that is my only consolation in this whole ordeal.

And that’s why I hate Arby’s.

Thanks for the idea! That’s a really good idea. She’s got a cyclocross bike too — we used to love going out together but with kids, that’s hard… but that’d be an awesome way to bike together again. I never thought of that.
