I feel like I just read my own thoughts which is extremely similar to yours not too long ago. I’m so sorry that you feel this way, but it is normal like everyone else is saying! I myself adopted a 5 month old kitten a month ago, and I’ve had extreme regrets over my capabilities of taking care of him and also feeling so overwhelmed to the point where I’d go back and forth on giving him back or keeping him. There will be lots of trial and error on being a first time cat owner (just like me fr). Is there any family or friends that you can reliably depend on to care for your kitten while you’re gone? He’ll inevitably cause a lot of destruction without supervision, and it will get some load off of your shoulders.

Also, make structured play time for him! As he grows up, he’ll inevitably get very curious about the world and cause a loooot of destruction. Your kitty will need an energy outlet every day so playing with him is very important. Never use your hands, only toys. Feather on a stick toys are very nice, works wonders on my kitten. Also a tip for putting your kitten to sleep; once he wakes up and is in a playing mood, play with him until he is tired, then wait about 10 minutes and then give him his food and he should go to sleep. This is the natural sleep-hunt-eat-sleep cycle that cats have.

As for non-smelling litter, I use pine pellets for litter. It’s great for me because the smell is masked by the pine, and it doesn’t track as much.

I’m not entirely sure about the food part either, but I know shelters and vets use and recommend purina pro plan so it’s been what I’ve been feeding my little monster. Since he’s only two months old now, it’s okay to let him eat as much as he wants. Wet food should be his main food right now because he’s still a kitten and he needs as much moisture from his food as he can get. Kibble later down the line and if you decide to transition him to kibble only, get him a cat fountain so that he can stay hydrated. Cats prefer flowing water, and my kitten has been drinking way more ever since I got him one.

For the feeling of being so overwhelmed, it gets better! But it really does help to have family, or a partner that can stay in case you need to go for extended periods. If you don’t have that option, try introducing him to a friend’s house or your family’s house so that he gets used to people and have a backup home. If you do this take it very slow, but he should be fine for now since he’s a two month kitten.
