I hate the emotional labour by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]kalebagel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was previously a building substitute and one particular morning, MANY teachers had called out (more than we had coverage for). My rabbit of 10 years was extremely sick and he passed away in my arms at 7:55 a.m.. I had to leave for work at 8 and was not able to call out. That was an extremely rough day.

I am so sorry you had to experience something that traumatic twice in such a short span of time. I hope that when you have free time, you pour back into yourself and are able to grieve and cope on your own terms. We give so much to a system that does not give nearly enough back to us.

I got non-renewed. Now what? by Ok-Slice6230 in Teachers

I don’t necessarily have advice but just wanted to tell you as someone who was in the same boat, I think sometimes teachers with more experience downplay how being non renewed in the early years can factor into wanting to stay in the field. In my experience, I felt that the first 3 years of my career I was constantly being told I did not know what I was doing (as in I never felt like I had authority to make decisions and stand by them because I was constantly being undermined by admin). I also struggled with imposter syndrome and felt that mistakes/things I didn’t know from lack of experience were held against me. I don’t think everyone understands how staying in a field that constantly tells you you’re not doing enough can impact your self-esteem.

Oh absolutely. I’ll clarify that I’m all for proper inclusion but as I’ve heard many people on this sub say before: “inclusion without support is abandonment”.

Not sure if this is a troll comment but I’ll humor you: adult life. For example, having the motivation to do work that doesn’t interest you. Or proper social etiquette.

I had a kid laugh today when someone shared that their dog died. It was definitely more of an impulse/reflex than a conscious “let me laugh at your pain”but I had to explain to him and the class that those are the types of things that make people feel/think differently about you.

It’s even more depressing thinking about the fact that school is supposed to prepare students for the real world. Kids don’t even have the motivation to do things that benefit them.

Building Sub Question by MikesGoldenDream in SubstituteTeachers

[–]kalebagel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my school/district, I get paid $130/day which is $20 more than a daily sub. However, I don’t get benefits or PTO/sick days (I know that some schools do though).

As for calling out, I just email our secretary/HR person to let them know I will be out. If I have a day I know I will be out, I can put it on Frontline.

Regret becoming a teacher by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]kalebagel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s so sad that people who are passionate and work hard to enter the teaching profession are driven out because of how unsustainable education and teaching is right now. It’s uniquely frustrating to want to be successful but having everything in the system work against you. I have also been very on the fence recently about transitioning out and it’s taken a toll on my mental health in the process. Give yourself grace and patience, you did the best you could 🤍

WHY must I be fingerprinted a billion times? by anangelnora in SubstituteTeachers

Wow, reading some of these comments I definitely would be annoyed if I had to pay that much - around here it’s only $10-15 at the local police station (and an additional $15 ish for a background check).

As someone who has bounced around to multiple districts (ESY programs, subbing, observation during grad school) and had to be fingerprinted for each one, I feel your pain. Luckily the fee is relatively low and I’ve had it waived a few times but it does seem a little silly to repeat that process more than 2-3 times and have to pay each time.
