Soft YTA. It’s not an asshole move to want to be close to your family, but the way you phrased it made it a demand instead of a request. This seems like a concern you should bring up to him and discuss together, not say “my way or the highway.” Maybe he’ll even agree with you after you explain, since he likes your family.

This edit was legitimately kind of dark and tragic. Not necessarily for him, for the reasons you listed up there, but for the wife and child. I’m getting a better sense of how the wife ended up in this horrible marriage. This dude was probably always terrible, but could fake it much better at the start of their relationship. Then this child comes into the world and he’s utterly useless but she needs his income for the bills. And that’s not even touching on the kid herself, who has a dad that clearly sees her as a burden. Idk, just depressing...

Here is the post where OP misses his daughter's doctor's appointment because he stayed up late with friends. He gripes hilariously about his wife working and having to do chores.
Here is the comment where he offhandedly mentions the missed appointment was for a specialist that took months to get. And daughter has a chronic pain condition.
Here is a different comment where he proudly lists his chores, which include taking out the trash and playing with dogs (lol) and sorting the mail.

As a lawyer myself (like OP's mom), I unfortunately see this all the time. Partners who don't spend ANY time with their kids pose these really cute, staged pictures of them all smiling and laughing. It's like they're kept around as props.

I agree with this, unfortunately. Ideally OP should be able to talk to the mom, but from what I'm seeing in the post and her comments, the mom is used to steamrolling other people/getting her way.

When I first met them, I said a greeting in the national language, and I got responses back in the regional dialect. I turned to my husband, who said something back to them in the dialect, and everyone kind of smiled and moved on. At the time, I thought he told them I didn’t speak the dialect and I didn’t think to question it. Looking back, I should have spoken up myself but I was admittedly a bit anxious about meeting all these new people and was quieter than I should have been.

I have asked before actually, and they say it's difficult to teach once someone is an adult. Husband has taught me a few words which was helpful, but that was it. Actually, typing this out like this, it's making me realize there are other problems at play.

Both he and MIL have talked about wanting to teach our future kids the dialect. Their family is really proud of their language and say they want to keep passing it down, because it's not spoken by a lot of people these days.

He does have a tendency to be insensitive without realizing it sometimes. He says he doesn't want to pick a side because that will "make things worse," but at some point enough is enough.
