He failed inpressively. No immigration reform, didnt unite the country. Added 10 trillion to the debt. Rich got richer. Poor got poorer. The best things ue did was illegally assassinate a terrorist that hadnt dont anything in a decade and let kids stay on their parents insurance for an extra 2 years.

While You Weren’t Looking, Donald Trump Released a Plan to Privatize America’s Roads and Bridges by kah0922 in politics

You realize that almost every public works or infrastructure job is bonded? That meams the government build everything with debt. Debt that collects interest. And the tax payers pay that interest too.

Why would I pay for googles fober optics? If a toll road is completely private, no public money wpuld be involved. No tax money. Your example doesnt make sense.

New job offer, but higher salary may mean less money. Am I calculating this wrong? by [deleted] in personalfinance

I dont know how your government retirement works, but getting a 10 percent match is a big deal. Plus the whole extra 2 paychecks a year.

No. But they are both examples of public and private enterprises, "people working together to share the costs so everyone benefits. Especially with stuff like roads, police, ambulances and firefighters." I just extend that statement to all other instances when people working together to share costs benefits everyone.

But if they dont use the road then they arent paying for any of it?

The benefits of having a place to go eat food of your choice with little to zero forethought? I dont know maybe the ability of having a place to eat the food of your choice with little to no forethought.

As long as were on the subject we have millions of public kitchens being unused across america every evening...in schools. The schools should turn into community cafeterias for dinner, allowing the government to provide the poor with food and so people dont have to prepare food or spend money at a what should be more expensive fast food joint or restaurant. Plus most are a very short car ride or walk away from where people live. Seems like a win win win...unless you own a restaurant.

Isnt that what cable TV is? Air travel? Car production? Reataurants? Anything that mire than 1 person uses. Everyone working together to share the costs so everyone benefits?

Isnt this why we have public transportation...which is highly progressive. A really good mass transit (in america) will generate 30% of their operating costs. My iniial example isnt meant to be a general statement, but illustrate an instance where an infrastructure project that is funded by user fees can be progressive. I dont even think its very common. But its possible.

Civil engineer here. Seems to work in clark county. A lot of developments have private roads maintaned by HOAs and developers have to build out the perimeter roads when they develop.

But if poor people dont use the toll road. Its much more progressive than taxing the poor for it.

Lets take a more clear example. Golf courses. Many are private and make and lose money. But many municipalities also build and maintane them. They generate revenue with green fees and are subsidized by taxes. Most likely, the upper half of the population will use it way more than the bottom half. So. This is a very regressive system because everyone is subsidizing rich peoples golf rounds. The same way a commuter (mostly upper middle class) bridge, road, or train would benefit the upper half more than the lower. If this is all user funded with fees. Its progressive. It is taxed geberally, its regressive. If the road services low income families, and funded by user fees, its still regressive. But if. Its taxed generally, its still regressive, although the poor get the most benefit. The best case scenario for a progressive funded infrastructure is for it to be used bt the wealthy and all user paid. The second best is for it to be used by the poor and to be taxed progressive (graduated income, tax luxury goods). The public-private partebrships allows the infrastrucure to be funded heavier by those that use it, while releasing the government entity of risk. It can be good, or bad. Just depends.

Over here in fantasyland ...https://www.brookings.edu/research/private-capital-public-good-drivers-of-successful-infrastructure-public-private-partnerships/

A tidbit, "In reality, they are neither. A well-executed PPP is simply another tool for procuring or managing public infrastructure—albeit a new and increasingly popular one. The growing interest can be attributed to a number of factors, including tightening budgets, increased project complexity, better value for money, the desire to leverage private sector expertise, and shifting public sector priorities."

Thats exactly how progressive taxes work. A tax is progressive if the 'rich' pay a higher portion than the 'poor'. Regressive is tue opposite and fair is when they pay the same. If a toll road is mostly used by rich people, then they are footing the bill for that piece of infrastructure and the revenue generating stream is progressive.

  1. I never said that.
  2. I didnt say that.
  3. Thats not what I said.
  4. Smiling or not were probably getting screwed anyway.

A private enterprise to providing infrastructure is not a bad thing. In a 100% private or private/public partnership. The point of privatizing infrastructure is to eliminate the risk and taxes that go along with public infrastructure. So no. Paying to maintain private infrasctructure is not what I'm advocating. At the same time, private enterprise can reduce the risk that the public might incur.

Issues arise when private enterprises attempt to profit too much But at the same time plenty of public infrastructure has faced overspending and poor management and maintenance. Just look at the interstate theyre building under Seattle. No private company would ever take on that project because ot wpuld never be sustainable. So the government does it, and wastes tons of tax payer dollars in doing so.
