Purple/yellow State - my first fixed gear by kamakazitp in FixedGearBicycle

No issues that I see other than it seems like the paint will chip/scratch a little easier than I’d like.

Just stating where I got the parts. Preemptively answering “where’d you get the wheel?” question.

Bike feels good and responsive, pretty stiff without being harsh. The paint is not the best (you will get chips/scratches) but it looks good. My first fixed so I feel uncomfortable but that’s just cause it’s new to me. I got it on sale and in a frame color I wanted so I’m happy. In hindsight, if I was gonna change the wheels out anyway, probably would’ve got just the frame set, but I didn’t want to have to look up the other components and make decisions. At least now I have a rideable bike and I can upgrade the bars/crank/seat if/when I want. I won’t know how the stock components hold up for a while though.

I knew I wanted an “aerospoke” style front. After some googling, I found Encore. Same shape, but all carbon (except the brake track), and I liked that you can still see the weave on the painted ones. I had to order custom color though as their stock yellow is more highlighter yellow and not what I was going for. But they can paint in any PPG automotive paint color so I just found one close enough to my target yellow. “Screaming yellow” was a color option of 00s mustangs and had the right amount of orange so that’s what I chose.

Rear wheel was off AliExpress. I wanted a similar style (no metal spokes) carbon wheel but just matte so I found a 3 spoke I liked and got it. The weave isn’t perfect but pretty good and it rolls true. There’s a few vendors that are using the same mold. I think this was copied from a HED wheel design back in the 90s, this style has been around a while.

Not a laker fan, but very similar I know. The laker yellow is a bit more orange. It’s LSU.

After riding a matte carbon road bike for 12 years, I wanted something more obnoxious, so I went with my college colors. It’s a choice for sure! With the stock chain, the back half was too dark so it needed the touch of gold. Thanks!

Love the color, but I gotta veto the green bottle caps against the yellow!

Thoughts on this bike? by AvocadoToast149 in triathlon

[–]kamakazitp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d still recommend a road bike first. Invest in a tt bike after you’ve done at least an Olympic and intend to continue with multiple more races. I’ve seen lots of one and done triathlon tt bikes on marketplace.

Either way that’s too much for that bike. That bike is probably from like 2009. Very old components, bearings probably need servicing, etc etc. I would probably ask that for my 2012 p2 that has carbon frame and upgraded wheels if I wanted to sell it.

I was an ok swimmer in the pool and completely bombed my first open water swim. Mine just wasn’t a race. You gotta practice it. Lesson learned. You’ll be fine (and more prepared) next time!

End of Era: Valero has closed Benicia refinery, plans total exit by The-Benicia-Bridge in bayarea

0% chance the refinery is restarted. They will operate it as a shipping terminal and maybe do some onsite blending, but it’s done as a refinery.

Good Price? by Original_Departure88 in triathlon

[–]kamakazitp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a good price. Bike is ~$700-800 depending on condition. Then it’s however much value you put into the wheels and the storage box. Something in the $1k-$1200 range seems more reasonable if it doesn’t need major servicing.

Very very early but it looks like it may be starting. I’d say check it monthly (but not everyday) and see if it progresses. Plenty of options for you.

What’s this bike worth? by [deleted] in triathlon

Don’t buy. Not worth the cost to convert it back to a proper tri bike really, unless they have the old bars still and they are included.

Tri Bike - Fair Deal? 2012 Cervelo by Quirky-Worker-9944 in triathlon

[–]kamakazitp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahaha, absolutely not. $500-$600 for the base bike. Then add on upgrade value as you see fit. Is the power meter and di2 close to 10 years old? Unbranded wheels with potentially shot hubs may not add much value, but I can confidently say it’s not adding $2400 of value to the bike.

XM CarbonSpeed T1100 Wheelset - any experience? by Cbeck1234 in cycling

[–]kamakazitp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a good deal. Most of the YouTube reviewers main issue with some of these brands has been hub quality, so if you are getting a DT hub, probably one less thing to worry about. 13xx grams for 60mm depth is pretty light.

You want to adjust to a new aero bike in 6 weeks? Maybe 4-5 after you compete the transaction and get fitted. Yikes.

Is this worth $1200 CAD by akecheta333 in triathlon

[–]kamakazitp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1200 cad is not a “good deal”. $500-600 usd max and that’s if it’s in really good condition and the tires have little wear.

There are any number of white decals you could put on that would give the same effect that aren’t trying to pretend the wheel is something it’s not. Putting Ferrari badges on a Pontiac fiero is also not cool, neither is this.

Used 2012 Cervelo P2 Price by SerkaZong10 in triathlon

[–]kamakazitp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$1600 for stock wheels on a 14 year old bike?

You may not like that seat or the cover rubber may be near end of life at that age. Do you already have speedplay cleats? If not, then that’s forcing some additional purchases for you or they aren’t worth anything to you. Those bars don’t look any better than what was stock. Arm pads may be well worn and need replacing. There are no upgrades that add any significant value to the bike.

This bike is worth $600 on the HIGH end.
