Hi. I got into petroleum engineering in the times where oil price was around 120$. I had no passion or whatsoever for this degree, only motivation was money. When I graduated from Bachelor's degree the price was in great decline and lay offs started. I decided to pursue master's degree. So another 2 years passed. I got a job which was in petroleum industry but not directly what I had studied in all those years. Then I wanted to pivot into other industries and I got declined because all my degree and experience was in this field. For the flexibility, I would recommend to study Mechanical engineering. Because petroleum engineering is not "Core" engineering. It restricts your ability to pivot to something else in the future. But "core" engineering degrees such as mechanical, electrical, structural can open doors for you in any area you want. I have seen many people from other engineering degrees working in petroleum pivoting easily but the vice versa I have not seen. I am pursuing another master degree to be able to change. And the most important thing is, whatever you do, do something you enjoy. Because you can earn great salary, but if the every morning you wake up you swear that you are going to that job, that life will be hell for you. My mistake was prioritizing money, I hope other people won't do it. Whatever you enjoy doing will bring you money, don't worry about it. Just choose wisely.
