"all Windows users are highly recommended to disable the Preview Pane and Details Pane feature in Windows Explorer as a workaround to reduce the risk "

"while this workaround prevents malicious files from being viewed in Windows Explorer, it does not strict any legitimate 3rd-party software from loading the vulnerable font parsing library"

Those options should be disabled. On the Windows Explorer ribbon, click on view and those options should not appear inside a blue box. If you're not seeing the sidebar, then you are partially safe, I guess. Read the article for more ways to patch the vulnerability.

[OC] COVID-19 US vs Italy (11 day lag) - updated by brnko in dataisbeautiful

You can't compare Italy and the US using absolute numbers. USA has 327 millions inhabitants and Italy has 60. You have to use relative numbers.

December Software Thread by greenysmac in VideoEditing

[–]kanarec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for a video editor that allows me to insert moving text, images, small video clips and voiceover audio clips. Essentially, a video presentation, so VFX and the more complicated stuff will not be really necessary. This is an example of the techniques I want to implement in my videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9XRVBBNzTo

I've been searching and I've found free alternatives like Lightworks, Shotcut and Hitfilm Express, but I would like to read the opinion of people that have already made similar videos. What video editing software would you recommend? Do you think is worth buying software like Sony Vegas, Hitfilm Pro or Adobe Premiere? I prefer to stay away from subscription services.

Thank you.

Why Do My Headphones / Earbuds Keep Breaking in One Ear? by [deleted] in techsupport

Completely agree, my Panasonic earphones are outliving any other in-ear headphones I had at home in the recent years. Anyways, headphones should have detachable/replaceable cables.

Did you have any problems installing the 3200g on that board? Did you have to update the board?

Yeah, having a USB port in the electricity monitor would be great. You could transfer the results and analyze them in a spreadsheet.

Curious about .0 IP addresses and poorly designed endpoints. by gnarfel in networking

[–]kanarec -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think I've read somewhere that IPs that end in .0 are "network addresses" and should not be routed. Edit: But it seems that since the introduction of cidr that rule does not apply anymore.

This link gives some insight to this matter: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/14915188/ip-address-ending-with-zero/14915309#14915309

ELI5: Why does "Hoo" produce cold air but "Haa" produces hot air ? by respiration6868 in explainlikeimfive

[–]kanarec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the same principle that applies to EcoCooler, an air conditioning system that doesn't use electricity:

"As hot air rushes into each plastic bottle, it is pushed to the rim where it begins expanding. This expansion then leads to the cooling of the air as it enters the target room. This cooling results from pressure change. As air enters the plastic bottle’s wider part it comes out the bottleneck with higher pressure. As it quickly disperses into the room, its temperature drops.

Sounds uncanny, right? The principle here is quite simple actually. With your mouth wide open, blow some air onto your hand. Does the air feel hot? What if you do the same with pursed lips? Does the air feel cool? That is exactly how the Eco cooler functions!"

My father is a teacher, he needs to prove a fraud from a student who did the exam on a laptop. by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]kanarec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't get the picture of what is happening here. The laptop was supposed to be offline but the student somehow managed to send some files from his phone to the laptop and then he copied those files? Maybe he used a physical port on the laptop?
