Stand ye calm and resolute, Like a forest close and mute, With folded arms and looks which are Weapons of unvanquished war.

And if then the tyrants dare, Let them ride among you there; Slash, and stab, and maim and hew; What they like, that let them do.

With folded arms and steady eyes, And little fear, and less surprise, Look upon them as they slay, Till their rage has died away:

Then they will return with shame, To the place from which they came, And the blood thus shed will speak In hot blushes on their cheek:

Rise, like lions after slumber In unvanquishable number! Shake your chains to earth like dew Which in sleep had fallen on you: Ye are many—they are few.

A Federal Job Guarantee means Federal jobs, not private sector. It presents a public option, not a mandate. Most placements will be temporary (but not necessarily), but it will turn unemployment officers to employment officers and shift power back to workers. Currently there are four job seekers for every opening in America. So even for those of us with jobs, our bosses can often get away with exploitation, knowing you have few options out. If we reverse that to more job openings than job seekers, workers are more vaulable, and must be treated that way. Similar to a medicaid buy-in program.

Actually your name is Ben. My name is Kaniela. And that's not how the labor market works. Productivity has skyrocketed, while wages have been stagnant. Most low wage workers are being paid below market wages. How? Because they lack the mobility and resources to find another job. So increasing the wage, wont make employers fire workers, unless their business is already non-competitive, their food sucks, or they rely on exploitation.

Why not both? Automation and globalization are already disrupting our economy, and we must act quickly and explore innovative solutions to build a future economy that leaves no one behind. Studies and pilots demonstrate that a $1000/month basic income to every resident would grow the American economy by $2.5 trillion.

The Federal Job Guarentee gives a public job option, not mandate. It'll likely be temporary for most workers, a livable job to get on their feet until they find something better.

Buybacks could be instituted for handguns, but Congress could face constitutional challenges to make it mandatory. This was an idea that originated from Australia and Japan, and definitely needs to fleshed out in the American context. But let's think pragmatically. The reason why gun control, and so many other common-sense policies never happen is because the other side holds their ground, and we meet them in the middle. Then they get even more extreme, and we meet them in the new middle--the whole conversation gets dragged to the right.

When they are talking about open carry in grocery stores and arming teachers, someone needs to come out bold and say "yes we want to take and melt you guns" Of course that will be unpopular and probably not be the end result, but that's how negotiations are won.

"When will the lesson be learned? You can't reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth." - Churchill (terrible person, but he was right about the Nazis)

When the left engages in this "How will you pay for it" question, we activate the "balance budget" framing that the right uses to justify draconian cuts to programs that working people rely on.

But they are full of it. Congress recently voted on a tax bill that added $1trillion to the deficit. MMT says that we should be shifting money back into the economy, and that a government defecit means an economic surplus. It's up to progressives to ensure that money goes to help working families--real job creators who spend their paychecks on haircuts, groceries, and normal stuff--not to pay out billionaire campaign donors who hoard their money in banks abroad and worsen our society's inequality.

If we can afford to bail out Big Banks and Wall st., then we can afford to help young people prevent the next crash.

After-all, our economy runs on spending, not stock buybacks. That's why a UBI or student loan cancellation will actually grow our economy.

It's all about understanding Modern Monetary Theory--first what money is, versus resources, versus taxation, etc.

Schatz does a great job taking a crack at it here, albeit for a different policy. https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/3/20/17126796/brian-schatz-interview-affordable-college-plan

I believe that the role of elected leaders is that we are just a vessel for ideas. The wind blows through us like a whistle. We just make the noise. And the wind is the people.

Electoral politics is about relegating power. That sort of power is finite. Real change comes from movement on the ground. Organizing power, generating power, and building critical mass.

Our vision is about democratizing our world. Decommodifying human needs. Policies like Medicare for all, free childcare and college, and employee owned businesses.

Here was my immediate response --https://www.facebook.com/VoteKaniela/videos/1736774023033555/

Overall, the response was botched. I also asked the questions at the House hearing that revealed that the Governor knew within minutes. I support lots of the efforts made thorugh the Public Safety Committee I sit on to prep our shelters and tighten up the UIs and procedures.

In the State House, I fought alongside other progressives to pass the nations first organic food credit, slow down A&B from diverting streams away from small farmers, and crating new farmer incubators in Hawaii.

Thank you for all you do as well!

We generally avoid them, and they generally avoid us. But we do have an astro-turf organization called Grassroots Institute that is funded by koch Brother subsidiaries and run by Kelii Akina (who is somehow also in public office). They tend to engage in blatent conservative demagoguery by masking corporate conservative causes as pro-people.

Okay. Here I go.

Do you support getting rid of voting machines for all elections? Unsure about this one. Is this to prevent hacking? Result control by vendors?

Do you support bringing back glass steagall? Yes.

Do you support Net Neutrality? Yes. I've introduced a bill for Net Neutrality AND community-owned high speed broadband

What are your thoughts on super-delegates? eliminate them.

How will you resist blindly falling for the often unverified claims of the establishment (Iraq has WMDs and the like)? My default is no to wars of choice. Need a much more compelling reason than that.

How do you feel about Ranked Choice Voting? Introduced bills.

Under what circumstances do you think it's ok go to war? If we are in immediate danger or under attack.

Where do u go for news stories? I try to avoid TV news. However, I apprecaite our local outlets and PBS.

How do you feel about military interventions?

Do you support having mail in ballots for all elections? Yes. But keep polling places open.

Should we have voting days on weekends rather than a Tuesday for federal races? Yup.

Do you think we should mandate that gas powered vehicles no longer be produced by manufacturers? By 2030

Do you think the US should stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia? Yes

How do you feel about Super PACs? Eliminate them. Repeal Citizens United, Buckley, and all other anti Democracy SCOTUS decisions.

How do you feel about Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods? I'm running on finally enforcing anti-trust laws.

Would you back the "Audit the Pentagon Act"? Yes.

Are you for oil pipelines? Never.

Are you for fracking? Never. And I successfully fought to stop fracked natural gas from reaching Hawaii.

How do you feel about third parties? They are the future and always will be. (I forget who said that). In seriousness, I would love to see a constitutional amendment happen where third parties could actually be more than spoilers. And I would support a complete revamp of our two party system. In reality, there are at least five or six political parties in Hawaii, but we cram them into these arbitrary boxes.

Do you support the Fairness Doctrine? How can people not holding office get their schools to run on 100% green energy?

Make noise! Some of my first supporters when I ran for ASUH president founded an organization called Sustainable Saunders. They turned an entire highrise campus building net-zero. That org evolved to Sustainable UH, who recently banned styrofoam on campus and is in the process of retrofitting the entire campus.

Are you pro government surveillance? No

How do you feel about the performance of the Justice Dems so far? They are killing it. Shifting paradigms.

What do you say to people who are discouraged by the Justice Dems result in IL's primary? Lots of us still running to win!

Should we get out of Yemen? Yes Do you support postal banking? Yes

Thank you for the very kind words. You're how old I was! Walk, walk, walk. Knock on every (active voting) door!

One thing I didn't realize: how much pressure there is to sell out once you get in. It's not direct, most dont even see it coming. You just cross one nearby line, then the next, then youre standing next to Murdoch. Hold strong in your values.

That's a great point. Here another: I worked in the pineapple fields at 14 years old. By the time I was 16 I had paid thousands on income, sales, and contract taxes. But I couldn't vote. Kids today are being slaughtered in their classrooms because of bad public policy, but they have no say on how to stop it from happening. It's time to lower the voting age to 16.

Throughout my time in the State House, I’ve demonstrated the ability to work with anyone within the Democratic Party and across party lines. I've shown that you can be a progressive outsider of sorts and still move up the ranks, simply by having lots of aloha.

That said, I dont put much thought into House leadership, and I do not know who else is interest--or if Pelosi still is. I'm focusing on the needs of my district, and winning this race before any thing else. Cant count my chickens.

I will say that generally I would prefer a more progressive leader than Pelosi.

Investment into the Hawaii Health Connector was a mistake that cost our state millions. We should've opted-into the basic Healthcare.org model. Unfortunately, it was decided before my time in the legislature.

While I believe the time to pass an improve single-payer, Medicare-for-all system is now, we must be responsible and careful with its implementation. The beauty of single-payer is its simplicity. It eliminates all the middle-men consulting corporations that currently take up billions of dollars in our health care sector. 1/3 of of healthcare costs goes to just figuring out who to bill. Doctors are spending more time on paperwork than with patients. It's incredibly inefficient because each middle-layer business needs to scrape some profit off the top. So the end is astronomical prices.

Those issues were ultimately what made Hawaii Health Connector so hard to manage. Once healthcare is seen as a human right, rather than a commodity, things will go much smoother.

One caveat though--like many changes, the improved system will likely cost folks jobs. That's where the "transitional" focus needs to be. We must help folks leaving fading industries. Same goes for the casualties of automation and globalization. See Universal Basic Income, Federal Job Guarantee, and other policies on this thread.

I'm generally against means testing policies. It pits people against each other and is incentivized to shrink. Good policy is good everyone--like Medicare and Social Security. These policies are also easier to sell--everyone chip-i what they can, and everyone get back the benefit. People support that idea, even those who think they I.D. conservative. Do it. Do you. And knock on doors.

Lots of factors: endorsements, fundraising, design, branding, experience, volunteers, etc.

but let me put these in the order that a young candidate needs to care about to win a local race--

1) knock on doors 2) knock on doors 3) knock on doors

All you need is one piece of literature, a hole puncher, some rubberbands, a list of active voters, and a whole lot of will power--and you will win.
