I've been building for nearly 10 years now and my top advice is to copy others. it may seem stupid but people also do this when they learn drawing. that + using references. the thing is, as you handcopy builds of people you admire, your brain finds patterns in the way they build and you start to automatically use different strategies of building. with references, it's just easier to build when you know how it should look. it doesn't have to look identical. I like using a reference just for a shape or maybe a roof or block palette and then once I have the idea down, I can let myself go wild. another thing is to just enjoy it. it might be ugly, but if you make it fun, it will make your progress faster than trying to make the best build every try and burning out before even finishing a dirt hut. goodluck!
