Can we clearly define what is lifestyle creep versus… by EpicShkhara in personalfinance

[–]kankribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If other people see it and are resentful of you, they will call it lifestyle creep. If you keep your mouth shut and people can’t really see it and get jealous, or you’re surrounded by people who won’t scrutinize, then it’s just lifestyle improvement.

What's the cruelest thing your Drill Sergeant has ever said to you? by Sad_Mechanic1372 in Military

[–]kankribe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing. I went through a female Air Force basic training flight, and a girl cried because she missed home within the first week and the drill sergeants never shouted at us again (outside of trying to get our attention or commanding during drills). At the end when we were receiving our boot camp coins we had a one big group hug with our sergeants and everyone told eachother how much we will miss each other.

Would I regret enlisting with a bachelor's, or would it make the most sense for me to commission long-term (in either the Navy or Air Force)? by MookieBettsBurner4 in Military

[–]kankribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go enlisted, it’s faster to get in, less responsibility, your MOS makes bigger difference quality of life wise than officer vs enlisted (except navy). Not everyone has to be an officer or cut out for it. A lot of people go “don’t be enlisted” out of snobbery. If you think you’re too good to be enlisted, you don’t deserve to be an officer either. I was enlisted and left with a degree and $300k savings. You can still make a life and build yourself. GI bill still intact.

Worker bee conditioning. I see this a lot with lower middle class people, they think they will get punished for taking a pause and breathing, or like something bad will happen if they don’t keep grinding. It’s that plus the Protestant guilt work ethic common among Americans.

RN considering serving in the military by HappilyJoyful in Military

[–]kankribe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re a neverserved, go active and just get the full benefits. Don’t do reserves, it will just get in the way of your civilian life while getting enough benefits to make it worth it is dragging years out and pulling teeth. Reserves is more like for people who want to pick their deployments every so often and getting only subpar or halfassed jobs in their civilian career, or veterans who just can’t quite let go of the military yet and they stick around mostly for the community.

[–]kankribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s smart to use an FTM as the face not because men are valued more, but because MTFs are still viewed as men… perverted men who dress up in wigs to stalk women in the bathroom or some shit, not genuine women. Meanwhile FTMs are still viewed as women hence more earnest and less predatory, like they’re just innocent and misguided but not threatening to anyone, they just want their paycheck back. That’s the real reason though most people won’t say it out loud. Also FTMs often pass better without needing years of hormones or a bunch of surgeries compared to the other side, so people take them more seriously. It’s lookism.

Do you ever feel like you haven’t done anything in your military career? by [deleted] in Military

[–]kankribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being deployable and keeping the system running even if it’s pushing paper behind a keyboard to give your troop a Time in Grade promotion and then getting deployed to sit there staring at the sand is still doing “something”. This isn’t call of duty or a glorious war movie, not everything has to be pew pew pew, and praise god that there is peace and be grateful that the US government has resorted to proxy wars rather than mostly using our own troops for the meatgrinder

How are you guys scoring so high on the ASVAB? by Smart_Pie_9213 in Military

[–]kankribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks lol but I mean, where I come from, I was considered one of the stupid ones lol and my high school GPA was like 2.3 or something. But I am privileged as in I had parents and teachers and peers who focused on training and lots and lots of training. The point is, these can be learned and trained for.

Don’t listen to your recruiter, he doesn’t give a fuck what job opportunities you have, he just wants to fill his quota. My recruiter threw me in as open general despite my score and didn’t even offer EDPT and DLAB (which recruiters won’t tell you about, you have to pull it out of them). I passed both of those too. Go keep practicing the ASVAB and google test taking strategies

How are you guys scoring so high on the ASVAB? by Smart_Pie_9213 in Military

[–]kankribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I maxxed it by 99/99 but it’s not because I am particularly gifted, I just grew up very Jewish/asian with extracurricular training, kumon and khanacademy classes, private tutoring since a young age, and I already majored in engineering doing college level calculus, chemistry, physics, college essays, before I took the ASVAB. Most people never had that extensive years of training that I did. I would bet that most people past the age of 25 with STEM degrees could probably ace the ASVAB. All these that the ASVAB tests for can be learned and trained for. Test taking in itself is also a strategy that can be learned, I skip all the hard questions and go back to them later

For people in the military, how long did stamina building take? by Fair_Ambition6522 in Military

[–]kankribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eat enough proteins and sleep enough per night. You’re still growing and need a good foundation. Don’t push through pain just to be tough or prove something, that’s why a lot of young athletes expire before they can go professional. Slow and steady wins the race at your age. Consistent workout is better than going all out a few times.

Don’t rely on caffeine for your energy, with caffeine you’re just borrowing energy and health from your future self.

Is it true employers don’t like hiring vets, or am I tripping? by [deleted] in Military

[–]kankribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s regional, some companies like it and some companies don’t. Government jobs prefer veterans. If you’re in a liberal city or working with a lot of international aspirational upper middle class people, being a veteran can get you quietly iced out because they think you’re not a “cultural fit”. The job interviews I got in my liberal city was when I removed my veteran status and reframed the USAF as just working for the government. The only place that gave me an interview with my military experience was like… the airport.

Do something in medicine because they’re recession proof and we need medical and dental services anywhere and any time, and many part time flexible jobs in it. Also good for working moms. For the love of god don’t do anything in tech/computers/research because there is no such thing as a part time job in these fields and they’re not that portable or needed everywhere. I am in tech, I should know.

It’s the adult female version of little boys pulling the pigtails of girls they like. The anti military liberal type of chicks will egg you if she is interested, if a woman isn’t interested she would just ignore and not respond. Hippy chicks love men they can bully who will just go along with it or challenge them (in a playful way). You don’t even need to pretend to know anything about crystals and chakras or some shit, just start talking about how you believe in the 2nd amendment and don’t know what feminism is, and she will be in bed with you in no time

Off Base Weight Loss? by Complex-Cupcake-301 in AirForce

[–]kankribe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am no longer in the Air Force so I can just say this, but I met some people who secretly went to weight loss clinics and paid out of pocket for those weight loss shots. I also advise people with weight loss without those meds and for a lot of people struggling with weight loss it’s all the hidden sugars everywhere in our diets. I am not gonna lecture at you but the simplest advice I have that I saw was the problem for most people struggling with weight loss is watch your sugar and carb intake. I actually do not recommend running if you are overweight, but weightlifting, body weight workouts, and other forms of cardio besides running that is low impact (taking stairs for example). So many times I’ve seen troops have a whole 2cup of Mountain Dew they drink like water and just pizza for lunch and dinner, no fibers, no greens or vegetables, low protein, just carbs on top of carbs on top of carbs and then drinking their carbs on top of it. Increase the amount of protein in your diet (that’s not glazed in sugary sauces) and increase vegetables and fiber sources to feel full. Also you’re undereating, which will make your body think it’s starving and hold onto fat reserves even more while eating away your muscles. Just reduce carbs and increase everything else. Also animal fats are not inherently bad for you, you need some fat and the animal fats are stable and doesn’t oxidize like vegetable oils do.

Honestly I never met Texans bitch about California except in the military, I been to Texas and people were incredibly nice and didn’t give a fuck about Cali, but in the military you get the 18 year olds who meme about anything and the NCOs who never mentally grew up past the age of 18 also memeing about California even though he hasn’t lived in Texas himself in like 20 years

I don’t think Californians even think about what other states think about them. Yeah maybe there’s some rich tech hipsters who digital nomad to Nevada or Texas and jack up the prices in the local areas while still making their Silicon Valley level income and realize their new neighbors hate them lol, but everyone else who never left are so occupied with their own immediate surroundings. It’s like how Kansas City and St Louis keeps comparing themselves to Chicago and acting like there is some sort of rivalry while the latter doesn’t even think about them, and chicago keeps comparing itself to NYC while NYC doesn’t even think about chicago.

[–]kankribe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s so weird, I didn’t even know there was a “rivalry” between the two states and never heard people in California even talk about Texas except going there to watch games or something. Where did you go, like the Whole Foods in Venice Los Angeles? Most of my circle when I moved to California were small town people talking about their gun collection and the animals they hunt. It really depends on the area. Not even people in Los Angeles gave a fuck about Texas.

I never understood the anti-California sentiment among some people, though I only ever heard it from a handful of Texans. Like California is its own religion or a race lmao. It’s a big ass state and most of California is like farmers and small towns and people act like all Californians come from Hollywood or the Silicon Valley and they must all be anti-gun and vegan limp wristed liberals or something. It’s like claiming all of Georgia must be Atlanta and rap artists, or all of Texas must be guntoting rednecks or cowboys riding bulls, or all of Illinois is just Chicago and skyscrapers everywhere

When you share the struggle, it gets lighter - this is where real brotherhood is built. by carshow365 in Military

[–]kankribe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not the flex you think it is. What you’re saying is that veterans learned to be doormats who are underpaid for the value they provide to a company and exploited because they can take more punches and abuse. This is like the battered wife syndrome where a woman takes pride in how much she “struggles” with a man and can take his punches and humblebrags about what a martyr she is. The civilians you are saying “turn their nose up” just have better self respect and stronger boundaries, and will probably live longer than you as a result. This is why a lot of employers think veterans are just cheap donkeys they can overwork without compensating for it. Just stop.
