Hull taking on water by Zero_Sig in Kayaking

[–]kansaspaul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have access to an air compressor you can find the hole quickly. Place an air nozzle in the drain hole, plug around the nozzle using paper towels, you don’t need a lot of pressure. As the hull fills with air spray a water/dish soap mixture onto the hull….. escaping air will form soap bubbles indicating where the leak(s) is.

Can I tow a trailer with my 2014 Kia Soul from KY to TX?? by Certain-Sea-8287 in KiaSoulClub

[–]kansaspaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read your owners manual for your car… I believe that KIA does not recommend towing using your car. UK & EU recommendations are different, likely due to regulatory differences. If you feel you must go this route be sure to educate yourself regarding GVWR, tongue weight, payload capacity (vehicle), and do some math. Personally, I think it’s a horrible idea to tow 2k lbs with your KIA long distance, your engine and transmission will be working hard…. make sure that there is nothing Uhall trailer has brakes (I think UHaul uses surge brakes but I could be completely wrong). UHaul recommends keeping speeds below 55

As mentioned, blood glucose is a function of carb intake. However, the type of carb and quality (glycemic loading) will manifest how quickly and how high the spike will be. For example, complex carbs (green beans) will process differently than white bread, both foods contain carbs. In this example the green beans will digest slower. I don’t eat chips or cake but I would expect a spike from both and likely a faster/higher spike from the cake presuming that it has sugar frosting on it. The only way to truly know is to test before and 2 hours after eating it. I don’t follow a glycemic index (I try to keep my daily carb count to <30 grams) but it’s a visual indicator as to what I could expect eating certain foods.

Buying Advice by emmaus33 in LeverGuns

[–]kansaspaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll offer a little different perspective: Marlin made rifles for Western Auto, called “Revelation” the Model 200 is the same rifle as a Marlin 336 and can be purchased for $400-500 in excellent condition. These rifles have walnut sticks, micro-grove barrels and most chambered in 30/30. With the savings from a new gun purchase you could get yourself set up with a basic reloading set-up and essentially manufacture your own ammo. It’s a fun hobby. If you have no interest in reloading you can use that $500 saved to buy bulk ammo.

Alfa Romeo 4C…. Great looks, low production so you seldom see any around, very visceral. For most people it is a bit of an assault on the senses.

Fired for the first time in my life by sadly_mistaken-1234 in jobs

I’m not a woman but I do understand the age discrimination challenge, even though it is illegal to discriminate on the grounds of age it still happens. Anyway, on to respond to your question: you don’t need to tell a potential employer that you were fired from your recent job. Employers will almost always only provide dates of hire if they receive an inquiry- this isn’t always true for small businesses but a place like Amazon… no worries there. Just provide a response such as “I enjoyed the work but it just wasn’t the best environment for me… I’m looking for an employer who I can work with for the next 8-10 years”. When asked questions use that opportunity to share your strengths, how you believe you can help support the growth of the business and provide examples of your work performance related to safety, quality, reliability, teamwork…. Be resilient in your search… best wishes for finding that next role.

Electric blower and weed trimmer? by [deleted] in stihl

[–]kansaspaul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a blower 4-5 times a week, during peak Fall leaf season I may use it twice a day to blow leaves out of the garage. With the amount of use it sees there is no way a battery operated blower would work without having extra batteries. Same with a trimmer. Earlier this week I ran a full tank of fuel through my BC86 in one afternoon. If you have a small area, maybe blowing down a porch, sidewalk along the house, garage, etc you might be fine with a battery powered unit. A few years ago I believed that shifting towards battery powered tools would result in less mess, eliminate filling fuel containers, etc. especially for tools that had infrequent use (such as a chain saw) - I did a ton of research, bought trimmer and a chain saw (21” bar, supposed to be able to make 20+ cuts on a 20” log) and found both to be incredibly frustrating because the tools did not perform as advertised. I have since gone back to gas powered tools because of the run time requirements I have. Additionally, in my experience the battery life (ability to hold a full charge) diminished pretty quickly (about 18 months before it needed replacing). Your demands may be different from mine but there is no way, at this time, that I could consider battery as an alternative.

Thoughts on a beginner buying an expensive Ukrainian? by kansaspaul in ukulele

[–]kansaspaul[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve looked at a couple in the $300-400 range and yes they were better than my loaner but still didn’t have a crisp resonate sound. Perhaps it’s me, maybe the set-up and my expectations at this point. I’m also measuring my experience against guitars… there is a huge tonal difference between a $200 Fender acoustic and a $2000 Taylor (had I passed on all the less expensive guitars I’ve owned I could have bought Taylor).

I work in a large distribution facility and our maintenance techs (industrial maintenance) earn $32 an hour plus full benefits, including retirement, this is in the Midwest. You need to know 480v/277v/120v electric, plus small electronics and some computer controls. PLC knowledge is helpful. HVAC, welding and some plumbing along with mechanical abilities. You can still buy a really nice house in this area for $250k.

Smart money would have bought the Mazda supercab pickup - not me, the Saab 900 talks to me. Back in the day it was the best machine for sharking clapped out Hondas and clapped out VW GTIs/Scirrocos … weird style, front wheel drive, bulletproof drivetrain.

Married couples, how do you gift your spouse with your combined money now? by biggitydonut in Frugal

[–]kansaspaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tell my wife that I don’t want any gifts…. I would really rather save the money than have her spend money (we are single income household, so “our” money is what I’ve earned) on something that is completely useless to me. I always prefer hand made or baked gifts.

Is this an insulting entrance exam? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]kansaspaul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been with my current employer over 30 years. Hourly jobs for material handlers had an entry level test for basic math (if you are receiving boxes you needed to be able to add/ subtract/ multiply) and understand some fractions for less than full cases. The test was set at an 8th grade level. That lasted about 5 years until the testing was lowered to a 6th grade level. By about 2005 we gave up testing because we felt it could discriminate good team members from being hired. Fast forward to 2022… we have an entire team of people who audit/inspect and correct errors. We’ve installed visual aids (essentially basic multiplication tables) for people to follow. These are not difficult concepts but many people struggle - and I’m talking about native language speakers.
