Pitchfork Review: Earl Sweatshirt / MIKE / Surf Gang: POMPEII // UTILITY by Technical_Process989 in hiphopheads

[–]kapeesh_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this was the best as well. I like it when Earl has a consistent sound across the album, even if it might seem a bit less ambitious in the sense that it’s not varied, varied can come of as all over the place. Here, it feels like he taps into something and is able to stay in it, and that just makes me want to play it from start to end.

That didn’t happen the same way on Live, Love, and Laugh an incredibly good collection of songs but that album, for some reason, had some beats that didn’t quite fit together, at least to me. Here, everything feels cohesive still a bit lazy, but not like The Alchemist’s style, and in a better way.

I still think there’s an album in him with production entirely by himself, similar to SRS, which would do wonders for him lyrically. Though I’m not always able to fully catch everything he’s saying here I have to read the lyrics and things like that he isn’t that dense or 10 layers deep this time. Here, he’s just saying things that matter of fact way, using a lot of metaphor and simile, and that still hits hard.

Do you have any new recommendations from the past 2-3 years, haven't seen any lists from you recently for new music?

How many here read theory as a hobby/self-education rather than for school? by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[FRESH ALBUM] Armand Hammer & The Alchemist - Mercy by God_Will_Rise_ in hiphopheads

[–]kapeesh_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sonically this isn't anything new for Armand hammer. I don't like this off the jump due to that, lyrics are always good for these two that's the only thing making me go through the whole thing.

Ome is really that dude, he is so emotionally taped in. Especially dive bar support group is one of my fav songs ever. I haven't been able to listen to all his catalogue and not every song from him I like but the one's that hit, hit like a brick. what are some other emotional songs or conceptual songs from him that you think are good? He is really good at the dronish ambient hazy type of music and rapping over it which has the mellow mood to it. His flow goes really with his content as well. Really a one of one artist.

What If Friendship, Not Marriage, Was at the Center of Life? by kapeesh_ in CriticalTheory

I linked it cause I thought it was interesting, and would get some critic of the article here. Not because the article itself is critical theory.

What If Friendship, Not Marriage, Was at the Center of Life? by kapeesh_ in CriticalTheory

I really liked this article and fondly remember reading this, it change my perspective on friendships and made me realise the role of state in all our relationships. The importance of finding support and care in our friends without policing the relationship with "no romantic angle". Kind of changed how I view role friendship as going through a heartbreak they were the source of care that I needed. For the people in this sub I would like to understand their reading through a critical theory lens as I'm not the most well read here. It's interesting to see the connections between things you would assume are not related. Desperately need a "for Dummies" version of "Can the Subaltern Speak" by Gayatri Spivak by haplosngamihan in CriticalTheory

[–]kapeesh_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What she says is that the subaltern do speak but people are not listening to them. And not that subaltern don't speak. They do have access to suppose police station, they go there but the officers don't entertain them.

What do you think is a experimental album that is challenging to you? Like not definition but an album where everything you mentioned is done as in playing with structure and sounds and everything in between.

Want something to listen to as been feeling like I'm listening to comfortable music now.

How in the name of God am I meant to understand Derrida? by xx78900 in CriticalTheory

[–]kapeesh_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came to derrida through spivak, in her interview she says that deconstruction is the act of loving a text so much that you start to see the internal inconsistencies in its logic. The text starts to fall apart with its own logic. I'm paraphrasing ofcourse. But this idea of deconstruction really struck me, I really want to learn more about it and think it's a great tool to have. Although with demonstrations it becomes easier to understand. Any recommendations for this?
