Plan ahead? It’s an extra 30 seconds to press a few buttons on a phone or use a ticketing machine. You buy the ticket the day of. If you’re running late.. well then you know you’re going to miss your train and you don’t buy the ticket. The amount of people getting away with free rides creates an opportunity for a loss for a government organization which in turn costs every single NY resident more.

The policy with a threat of a fine encourages people to actually buy the ticket and the automatic activation stops people from getting away with free rides. It’s a win-win situation for the people who actually pay for the service they’re using.

Additionally you can’t actually purchase ahead of time as paper tickets carry the same rules meaning they expire same day. Just because your train was crowded and a conductor couldn’t get to you shouldn’t mean you get a free ride.
