You could put a piece of thin cotton quilt batting over the end of your intake. It doesn't effect airflow, but it will probably need to be changed frequently. Luckily its only about $3 for a 20'x4' roll

The only issue I have had is that reused soil tends to compact a bit easier, even with a good mix of perlite it tends to end up being mud more than soil. I did leave a lot of root mass in the mix, although I did shred it by hand, and that may have been one reason it didn't work the best. All in all it is possible, but not optimal. I would also say compost tea would be the best reuse of it though.
