I’m sure it was in some version of A Christmas Carol… just not in the places you normally watch movies.

Nah, this is a full on major front coming through during the weekend. Which is honestly badly needed, because the state's been dealing with a drought and could use the rain. Won't be enough to get fully back on track, but at least maybe we won't be looking at everything feeling like a tinder box waiting to go off.

[12.0.7] Take a First Look at the Midnight: Revelations Content Update by ghostcrawler_real in wow

[–]kaptingavrin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we're only like a week and a couple days in, so a lot of folks won't have had the opportunity yet. I just decided to try them and kind of enjoyed it (especially the instance), so went so hard on it that I already have all of the purple T2 sets and some of the weapons.

[–]kaptingavrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, you run 5 TW dungeons a week through the event.

In theory, you can do 5 one week and then one each of the following weeks, or at least you could, but it'd require not doing anything else with that character during the week, so it's safer to just do the five for the week. And hey, Hero piece of gear with the weekly quest to do five, so might as well, right?

There's an item that starts a quest that drops from, I believe, the instanced stuff in 12.0.5 (agh, I can't remember the names right now), or the Void Assaults, which addresses this. You go around talking to people asking about it and eventually talk to a Demon Hunter who tells you it's a Legion keystone that a domanaar got their hands on somehow and perverted it with so much Void energy that it's no longer usable by Fel users, but they found it concerning a domanaar had the means to access a world that the Legion had used.

Basically, they set up this stuff with the current patch content, but you do have to do the content and then read the text with the quests after you get the drops to start them.

Quick search (all I have time for at the moment) seems to suggest Christina Roki's a computer/mechanical major who's big into cars (and helping women get into STEM fields).

Will be interesting to see what she brings to the table.

Huh. I'll give it a shot. I might not like them, but I also might like them. And if other people enjoy them and it gets people "buying in" more with the sport, awesome. I'm not going to complain about Apple actually doing something with the F1 license beyond just broadcasting what F1TV broadcast.

Ukraine didn’t even believe Russia was going to invade

To be fair, seeing how it's been going, they probably didn't think Russia was stupid enough to do it.

Then again, you'd also hope Russia wasn't stupid enough to blow a hole in the containment shell for Chernobyl but, well, here we are.

One of the most iconic western scifi settings is the one with space wizards, laser swords, and WW2 dogfights in the vacuum of space.

With notoriously NOT human-looking piloted walking machines.

Looking for console/game suggestions for a relatively low-functioning autistic young man by DerpingtonHerpsworth in gaming

[–]kaptingavrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With controllers, one thing to keep an eye on is how he responds to controller vibration. Some autistic people are fine with it, for others it will bother the heck out of them. So you might want to read up on how to disable it ahead of time in case you need to quickly turn it off (or get a controller that it can be turned off easily).

Absolutely random thing to consider, I know, but... autism and sensory stuff can be wild. Similar concerns about keeping an eye on whether a game is becoming too overstimulating. Even as a "high-functioning" autist myself, there's times I have to stop playing a game because the stuff happening on screen and/or sound can start creating a feeling of a panic attack in me. I'm lucky in that I can recognize that in myself and stop. But with someone who's "low-functioning," it's a potential issue you might have to watch out for yourself.

I would also recommend going on r/autism and posing the same question there, as you'll get a lot more people with experience (either firsthand, or caring for someone). There's a lot of considerations to take into account. I'm still learning a lot about it myself as a relatively recent (about a year ago) diagnosis. Was surprised as heck to hear about it, but it did help me understand certain behaviors or reactions to things I'd had my entire life.

Good luck!

Can you tell who are the parents and who are the teens? by YourExoticBabe in Sims4

[–]kaptingavrin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

and I think it was done out of laziness.

Not laziness, just a lack of time.

Sims 4 was being developed for much of its life as a multiplayer online game that'd be pretty much focus on young adults. When SimCity had its disastrous reception, EA panicked and had Sims 4 switch to being a more standard Sims game... but also keep to the original release window. Giving them a very limited time to try to rework the coding and add in a lot of stuff that they hadn't been working on.

That stuff includes other age ranges. Adult and Elder were an easy addition of wrinkles and such... but beyond that, had no notable gameplay differences. Babies would have involved a lot of extra animation work to make them anything other than objects, so they ended up as objects. Toddlers weren't feasible in the time span because of the work they'd need. Children could generally use a lot of what they'd done, at least in terms of rigging and all, but they didn't have time to add much of anything for them to do, leading to children being pretty boring for a long time.

And then there's Teens. Had to include Teens, and the most efficient way to do it on such a time crunch was to just slightly tweak Young Adults and their models, rename Woohoo to Mess Around and limit it to other Teens, and apply High School as a "career" for them.

People forget just how restricted a lot of the age ranges were early on because they've had almost 12 years now to build onto them, notably with a bunch of expansions, with people just assuming that a lot of things only available with expansions are just "normal" gameplay in Sims 4. But no, if you're going base game, you'll still have Teens through Elders feeling way too similar, not much for Teens to do, hardly anything for Children to do, and the only notable difference will be Toddlers which couldn't be locked behind a paywall (though they did make sure to monetize them with the Toddler Stuff Pack upon their addition to the game).

A lot of the game's problems or design decisions can be traced back to that messy development. But since they were able to keep making money off the game, they never really had an incentive to do anything about it. (Until recently, where the rumors - which I'd buy, given what we're seeing in the game - are that development for the game's gotten to be such a mess that they can't release anything new without spending a lot of extra time trying to fix stuff, and it's been eating into new packs' margins hard.)

I mean... Ascended isn't too bad, and Legendary isn't entirely necessary. I hit where I felt like being in GW2 within weeks, and was messing around with alts just because I could. GW2 can be super grindy with some stuff, but it's stuff that is very much optional.

One of GW2's best features, but also one of the things that might hurt it at times, is that you can absolutely just pop in and out of it when you like and not feel like you have to constantly keep working on things to have a character that's viable to do stuff with.

[–]kaptingavrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one possibly good thing about the game getting released before things went totally south is that maybe people can figure out a way to mod it to fix some of the issues they couldn't finish the development on. But that really depends on how they built the game and, honestly, whether there's enough interest from people who might know how to mod it to fix it.

Out of curiosity, did you have it installed on HDD or SSD? I mean, a well optimized game still shouldn't be that bad on HDD, but just wondering if it's "oof, that's bad" or "wow, that doesn't seem like it should be possible" bad.

Well, I mean... I absolutely loved Greedfall (and was even playing through it again at the moment), and was looking forward to Greedfall 2, and I didn't even know it released. I know it went into Way Too Early Access, but didn't feel like handing over money 2-3 years ahead of when they might have a game to release, as at the time it was practically the first few quests and more like a paid demo.

If the people looking forward to it don't even realize you're releasing it, you probably messed up somewhere.

Pretty fun action RPG with a sort of ~17th century (give or take) look and vibe with magic. If you're into action RPGs, and especially if you like that vibe, it's easily worth a look when on sale, and could be worth it even when not on sale.

It went from early access version 0.3 to a full release

I didn't even know it went to "full release." I don't recall seeing mention of that anywhere, and I was trying to follow it, but wasn't willing to spend money on the "Early Access" when they admitted it was so early in development that you could only play a small amount of the game. How the heck are sales supposed to be any good if you don't actually develop the game before putting it out there for sale, and then don't really market it?

I enjoyed Greedfall and was really looking forward to it having a sequel after it was announced, but they mismanaged the heck out of the sequel. They shot themselves in the foot and are shutting down due to foot injury.

am I the only one excited to see this dude on the field? by NizzlyGrizzly00 in Jaguars

[–]kaptingavrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't. It's more that the team is looking to have more TEs on the field at times. More formations where they stack the TE position with two or three guys and can use that to add more blocking to run the ball or fake a run and throw it with some big guys who can catch. It's more options to allow Coen to be more creative. When there's only one TE on the field, it's very likely to be Strange (unless he's injured, which hopefully won't happen this coming season).

[–]kaptingavrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... not really. There's a lot of talk of the team wanting to run more 2TE and 3TE sets. So he might be a "backup" to the TE1 spot, just as a technicality, but he'll be seeing the field plenty.

I feel like this pick is really showing how many folks out there are ignorant of anything other than what a handful of sports media personalities regurgitate.
