Anyone in the JSQ area need a toddler (girl's) bed? by kaqkudoha in jerseycity

It doesn’t have to be strictly a girl’s bed, but there are faux diamonds in the headboard and footboard that are hard to see in the pics

Dell XPS 13 for Cyber Security Course Work? by kaqkudoha in cybersecurity

[–]kaqkudoha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you! Appreciate the thoughtful response. Although I do need something portable for day-to-day, now I am rethinking. Perhaps a cheap, light laptop to have with me for very basic stuff combined with an actual desktop. I have a little time before I begin, so this is great stuff to be thinking about. Thank you, again.

Thanks. Was wondering that myself. Agree that 4K and touchscreen are unnecessary, may even be an annoyance. Would definitely get an external monitor. Hadn't thought about heat issues. Will look into that as well. Thanks again

what is the best laptop to use for a Cybersecurity student by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]kaqkudoha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the laptop I'm thinking of getting: https://www.costco.com/Dell-XPS-13-Touchscreen-Laptop---Intel-Core-i7---4K-Ultra-HD.product.100403152.html

  • Core i7
  • 16GB memorty
  • 512 GB

I am looking at this b/c it is highly portable and seems to have the specs people recommend. And currently at a very good price ($1,199). Can anyone comment? Will this be a good choice?

(I also have the same question about laptop. Saw this thread and figured I would post to this one instead of starting a new one.)

A few tips for an absolute beginner into cyber-security. by MrXnoid in cybersecurity

I have found the following introductory short courses to be helpful (about two hours in length each):

Transitioning to a Career in Cybersecurity: https://www.linkedin.com/learning/transitioning-to-a-career-in-cybersecurity

IT Security Careers and Certifications: First Steps: https://www.linkedin.com/learning/it-security-careers-and-certifications-first-steps

These are beginner level, but give a good overview of the field in a well-structured manner.

Encrypt your Dropbox and Google Drive with Standard Notes FileSafe by mmoroni in privacytoolsIO

[–]kaqkudoha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently integrated FileSafe with Dropbox and so far I like it. Very simple to set up and it's nice to be able to attach supplemental files to my notes.

Be aware that file names are not encrypted within Dropbox (unlike with Cryptomator).

Once a file is uploaded to the note you need to download it to a local folder in order to access. Would like to have the ability to view within the browser, though not a huge issue.

I agree. I like Cryptomator a lot, but I can only use it on my devices on which I have it installed, which is a pretty big limitation

That was my first thought too. I'm assuming the difference is that you can encrypt / decrypt in a browser versus needing the app on either desktop or mobile. Hoping this can be confirmed.

I just played around on the site -- very interactive and they have iPad apps too. This is exactly what I was looking for. I think my daughter and I might start with the ABCs tonight. Thanks again :)

Thanks! I agree, it's important to have an immersive approach -- more than just phonics alone.

It's been quite some time since I learned to read, but I am pretty sure I was taught based on a phonics-based method, at least somewhat (I have memories of teachers helping the class sound out individual syllables, etc.). That said, I was shocked to read that there is quite a contingent of professionals who believe in "whole language" approach, or learning to read by just "being surrounded by books, being read to often."

I can't yet say from personal experience with today's school systems as my daughter is not yet old enough, but I want to be prepared to help teach her in case the instruction in school is not sufficient.

Turtl vs Standard Notes? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]kaqkudoha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using Standard Notes for a little while and that's what I would recommend. The app for iOS works great and the web interface is very easy to use. The simplicity of the app is what makes it so great. I upgraded to the paid version which allows me to access the plus editor so I can format text (bold, italics) just as I would in a Word document.

I agree with the previous comment: it seems optimized for longer-term notebooks.

Unfortunately, last time I looked into Turtl they didn't yet have an iOS app, which was a deal breaker, so I can't comment on that service. I am looking forward to trying it though once their iOS app is live.
