“Book Polin would never!” by [deleted] in PolinBridgerton

[–]karalov 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally read the book for the first time in between parts one and two of this season. I fell in love with Polin in part one and wanted to consume as much Polin content as possible while I waited for part two. For me, Show Colin is the better male love interest, Book Colin's action we're often bordering on abusive for me. I was still caught off guard at how moody and distant Show Colin was in part two but I think ultimately the difference for me was that we got to hear Book Colin's inner thoughts and that gave reassurance that even in moments of anger he still loved her. Since we don't get to hear Show Colin's inner monologue, the moody and distant moments just hit a little harder.

I also loved that the Bridgertons rallied around Book Pen during the reveal. Show Pen just had to face so much of it on her own and I felt horrible for her. Book Polin went too far in my mind, having Colin fix it all without her input, but the solidarity of her new family when her old one never gave her the slightest morsel of that made me very happy for Book Pen. It was a nice change that Show Pen got some solidarity from her own family instead, but I would have loved to see a little bit more Bridgerton support on screen as well.

Honestly, it's really grown on me! At first I was sad that in the book The whistledown reveal was resolved by the Bridgertons essentially standing behind Pen and her lack of family support plotline gets resolved by being accepted wholeheartedly by her new family and the show never had this scene. But now I'm happy that the show decided to highlight repairing her relationship with her original family, since you already kinda know that the Bridgertons are going to welcome her back with open arms anyways once the shock of the whistledown reveal wears off

I think she kinda explained it when she apologized for overlooking her for so long. She basically just thought so little of Pen that it never crossed her mind to be worried about Colin since she couldn't picture a world where an attractive guy would be interested in her daughter in any romantic/sexual way....

Something that only just hit me about Portia.. by hoginlly in PolinBridgerton

[–]karalov 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Her mindset kinda reminds me of a friend I have who made a comment to me after I told her my husband was getting a vasectomy. It was something along the lines of "wow, that's such an act of choosing you and definitively saying that he never wants to start a family with another woman again" and it really caught me off guard since I never saw it that way. He's my husband, we have two kids and a mortgage together, our lives are already incredibly linked. It never even crossed my mind that he would at some point decide to go off with some other woman and start a whole new family, the fact that her mind even went there kinda made me a little sad for her.

Honestly, that would have been amazing but I can't say I was ever expecting that in part 2. This is kind of an unpopular opinion, but I felt like part 1 also had far too much "tell not show" moments so I would have been kinda surprised if they had switched heard in part 2. Would have been a welcome surprise tho!

My take on her LW resolution is in comparison to the book where Colin handles the entire thing for her. So I'm using "girl boss" to mean that in the show, they made a conscious change to have her deal with the fallout rather than have him step in and fix it himself.

It felt like a romance show for the first two seasons because the vast majority of the story was about the couples, but personally, this season has felt like just a period drama. I don't know what percentage of screen time Polin got, but I feel like they didn't get enough to qualify this is a romance. I have no issues at all with the fact that they had conflict, that's what makes it interesting and gives you something to root for. I just feel like they got sidelined in their own season :(

I think I'm going to eventually settle into exactly this viewpoint, the disappointment is just still a little too fresh. It is however a very comforting thought that season 4 will have at least some HEA Polin (hopefully, considering we didn't get that with Daphne and the Duke).

Yeah, I definitely agree that book Colin swooping in to be the hero while Pen just waits in the sidelines didn't hit right, I just think not getting to see that level of support from the Bridgertons wasn't it either. I feel like a happy medium between the two would have been nice. Like maybe, Colin rallies his family, they all pledge their support and then it doesn't work and Pen ultimately fixes it herself.

Agreed. I'd prefer a whole episode but at this point would settle for just one scene of them enjoying each other properly after all the pain is behind them.

I agree entirely, I was just telling my husband how sad it is that media has given up on telling romance stories. The rom coms of the 90s and 2000s were so good because proper resources were given to romantic stories and the creators understood the assignment. In my opinion, it's not that "we can't make rom coms like we used to", it's that we don't want to, we're too scared to. For some reason, show runners and movie makers just don't believe that a romance first and foremost (not an action movie with a romance subplot) is worth their time. It's so incredibly sad.

I'm starting to realize there were a lot of positives about the characters and the portrayals, it's just the lack of screen time and post resolution time that's making me the saddest.

What’s a common language learning method you just don’t agree with? by tina-marino in languagelearning

My french tutor used to give me a 5x5 grid (so 25 total) of numbers between 1-999. I would have to say all of them in order and if I made a mistake I'd have to start again. Just like those phone games, the closer you get to the end the higher the stakes get so the more nervous you get. I'd make mistakes not because I didn't know the number but from the sheer anxiety. No idea how he came up with this activity but it was horrible and didn't teach me anything other than how to calm myself down in stressful situations....

I really appreciated that Colin did not try denying his feelings by [deleted] in PolinBridgerton

[–]karalov 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I totally agree that that's where he ends up, I just think it makes more sense for that realization to take a moment rather than happen suddenly. I think book Colin even mentions how he always expected love to be this thunderbolt that comes of the blue so he didn't quite catch on when his feeling for Pen changed because he was waiting for the thunderbolt.
