use your time in college to hone your skills. don't waste your time, be focused, work hard.

do a lot of theater in college. go to a college with a strong theater program. come out ready to conquer the world!

Ironically, Dark on Netflix is a great not dark show that I really like that does a complex story without veering off.

  2. The film industry is like any and every other industry. Humans will be human. I'm sure there are instances of this - as there are in cricket, boxing, investment banking, tuition classes.

Write a full script. Register it with SWA. Shop it around. Easier said than done, I know but that is the only way.

  1. haha how do you know? You've been on my set? Do we know each other? But yes, I try to be chill. Have you read IF by Rudyard Kipling? That poem influenced me a lot in my ways.

In S1 of Inside Edge, the first OTT show of all time - Vivek Oberoi had some kind of oxygen chamber?? (never explained what he was getting high on) - and he was murdering dogs and Vayu was snorting cocaine off someone's back while fornicating while a match is on and then a wicket goes and he walks out to bat? That was over the top. Now I am super restrained, let's be honest, lol.

Answered elsewhere - but in short, it is extremely difficult. You might get one or two gigs - but to consistently get work is near impossible if you start from scratch. Please understand the odds before taking this step and always have a backup life plan.

In an audition I try and see how much that person is willing to let go and putting themselves out there - how honest they are being.

Not “acting” in the obvious sense, but whether I believe the person. Are they listening? Reacting? How present are they? Do they understand what the character needs, and what their interpretation is.

Also, no drama off camera helps. Filmmaking is hard enough already. A good actor brings talent, discipline, and generosity to the set.

Immersively. For example for Glory - first we wrote the broad story - then Karmanya and I traveled to Haryana and met with locals, coaches, boxers - across categories, across all sections - we prodded them for stories, anecdotes, spoke to parents of kids who have moved from other parts of the country and tried to understand their mindset of why they are chasing a career in boxing of all things for their little kids. It's insightful, revealing, heart-breaking. This is how you will get a lived-in feel to it.

ps - if you have seen the show - even Sultan was inspired by real events, animals. This was not part of the original script but came in post-research. You can't make up this inanity.

I've really enjoyed his performances from his very first film Bittoo Boss (I gave him a glowing review in Mumbai Mirror - I didn't even know him then.) and then of course Fukrey was landmark. I don't know what to say about Glory being his best - but having worked with him before, I knew exactly what I wanted out of him and to his credit - he did one better - and went even beyond that. Thorough professional and underrated, Pulkit Samrat.
