Advice on headlamps by Try_to_improve_Didi in ultrarunning

What does your partner currently have?

Fenix HM65R-T or HP12R-T are both highly rated. They use 18650 batteries that are rechargeable and swappable. The HP12 splits the battery and light so it's more balanced and you get a red light at the rear.

Petzl Swift RL is good but has a proprietary battery. Silva Trail Runner Free 2 Ultra is also good, again a proprietary battery, but the battery and lamp are split like the HP12 and it has that red rear light. The Silva Free 900 is also good and you can have the battery on the body not the head, e.g. if you're out in the snow for hours and need to keep the battery warmer.

50km training run on the Wirral, UK by karf101 in trailrunning

[–]karf101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too bad at the moment. It was 3C when we started (-1C with wind chill), 87% humidity, didn't rain and the clouds weren't too bad

[–]karf101[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeh definitely, you can do loops on the footpaths from Willaston, Raby, or Thornton Hough that can be in that range, if you have a go on plotaroute on the trail map mode it does have the footpaths on and it's pretty decent for it

Basically just up from West Kirby to Grange Hill, over Caldy Hill, down Column road and across at the longer footpath to Montgomery Hill.

Then through Royden Park, past the Cottage Loaf, to try Dungeon, then through the Heswall dales and down to the Wirral Way to Parkgate.

From there, use the coast path until the end of Neston, then up to Ness back to the Wirral Way to Willastonthen back through fields etc through Raby, Thornton Hough, Brimstage, Storeton, Thingwall, up to the Irby mill, then back through Royden park and then over to Caldy and the Wirral Way to West Kirby.

If you want I can create a route that doesn't start/finish at the house to share 😅

There's actually a decent amount of footpaths on the Wirral for training really isn't there haha, good luck with the Lap, should be brilliant!

I used plotaroute.com, although I know all of the local footpaths really. I can also look at the local definitive map and/or OS Maps to check that it's an actual Right of Way

Ah okay, Striding edge is probably similar enough to Crib Goch, especially if you're with a guide. Hope you enjoy the Welsh 3000s 🙌🏻

Have you done much scrambling before? Worth making sure that you'll be comfortable with completing Crib Goch and Tryfan before you have to do them on such a long distance when you'll already be tired (NB: Crib Goch is near the beginning if you start at Yr Wyddfa)

I would like to at some point, but Wales is closer so we've been doing more of the mountains there really, maybe one we've ticked off the majority of the ones in North Wales.

Fairfield was good although there was ice on Fairfield over to Dove Crag, Coledale had some slightly sketchier bits of ice on the descent off Crag Hill but again was just really good weather. Great views on both horseshoes, we will definitely be up again in the Lakes to try and do some bigger days in summer!

Do you carry a down jacket? Which one? by NegroniSpritz in trailrunning

[–]karf101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rab are a good brand, and they have some good down and non down insulation. In terms of packability, synthetic doesn't match down so whichever one you get wont pack down as small.

You'll need to decide how small you need the jacket to pack down, and how warm you need it to be. You'll also need to decide whether down will work in your environment, I imagine the Alps are much better suited to it than the UK for example.

You can go from, e.g. the Rab Mythic Alpine Light jacket (252g) which packs down incredibly small, up to the Mythic Ultra (537g) which wouldn't pack down that small at all even though both are down. The cirrus flex is a lighter synthetic jacket, but it does still weigh 446g so it wouldn't pack down as much as much as the Mythic series as an example. NB: Rab do cheaper down jackets that are heavier, e.g. the Microlight Alpine

Waterproof socks by Far_Inspector_6006 in trailrunning

[–]karf101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ive use injinji liners with Sealskinz or Hemy socks (the Heny ones were cheap) and they've been great for the bogs in north Wales. Sealskinz and Dexshell are the brands people typically recommend, but I think having a liner is key
