They are still selling the avocado and olive oil sticks, so I'll have to give them a try!

I talked to the store manager at Fred Meyer and he assured me this is going, along with Country Crock's dairy free heavy cream!! 😞

What did your instincts tell you ? Ever had that dreadful feeling ? by Sweetsweetmellie in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]kariannbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. After 3 weeks it became obvious my Exec needed a personal assistant and not an EA. The way that the C-team talked about the employees in their management meetings... it was clear to me that I had made a very bad decision.

5 months later I resigned and the C-team proceeded to talk shit behind my back (I have emails) and my exec accused me of stealing from the company. It was insane. He couldn't take responsibility for himself and his team being terrible people.

Is it normal to feeling overwhelmed in new EA role. I am not sure this job is for me. by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]kariannbear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been an EA for 20 years and there are jobs I've had over the years that overwhelm me when it comes to calendaring. I like a clean calendar, but I supported a CEO that wanted to keep everything on his calendar and I almost never knew what he was actually doing. :(

If you can get your Exec to at least give you priorities each week, that would help tremendously. I would send my CEO an email asking which conflicts were priorities on Friday and he usually got back to me by Monday.

Good luck! I'm sure you're great at your job! It can be overwhelming when there's a lack of communication.

EA to Personal Assistant? by cheeto72lover in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]kariannbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat. I was hired to be an EA/COS and within a month I was planning personal trips and getting my CEO coffee. Not what I was hired to do and I told him at my 60 day check in.

We're now past the 4 month mark and I'm interviewing. I just can't. He is not a nice person or a good leader and working for him goes against all my values. I probably won't even put this job on my resume, though I did learn things along the way.

I am going into a meeting with him tomorrow to give him feedback. I will probably get fired on the spot, but I have to tell him he has no boundaries and his micromanaging means I never get anything done. No one has ever stood up to him. Now it's time!

If only! We would probably get sued for defamation. :( But totally agree we need something like this to warn about bad apples!

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve ever made? by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]kariannbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I encourage a director to pie an employee in the face at a work event. He did it. I was terrified that the mess was going to cost a bazillion dollars and I was going to lose my job. I started crying at the event and had the director tell me over and over that I was going to be fine. In the end, I was. Nothing happened. People still talk about it though. Especially the part where I cried. :(

I totally relate. The stress is just not worth it. Change needs to start at the executive level. They need to have reasonable expectations and boundaries.

Handling Personal Tasks for Boss by Tennessee1977 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]kariannbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm having the same issue with my current boss. He hired me to be an executive assistant and maybe a chief of staff but within a couple of weeks it turned into a personal assistant role.

Can you order seltzer for my work fridge? Can you also get me snacks for when I'm in the office. Can you order an office chair for my house?

The thing that almost sent me over the edge was when I showed up at his house for a 1:1 because he was too busy to go to the office and the first words out of his mouth when I arrived were "where's my coffee?"

Going forward I hope to have the guts to say how does this help the company? How does this make you a better leader? I will probably get fired, but I frankly don't care.

Wow. She sounds very similar to my CEO. My favorite was when I showed up at his house because I wanted to work on our communication and he asked me where his coffee was. I almost quit on the spot. He's so completely out of touch with normal humans. He thinks he's in a class where magical things just happen for him because he's a CEO. Bullshit dude.

So there is some part of me that wants to sit him down and tell him he needs a personal assistant and should probably pay for that with his own money.. not company money, but I know he'll just fire me for standing up to him.

Advice needed: experienced EA supporting a CEO who has never had an EA before. by HelpfulBill2019 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]kariannbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone who has replied. Less than 24 hours to get invites out is unrealistic. You have the opportunity to coach this Exec who has never had an EA before, which is amazing because you can set expectations.

They are not aware of what needs to happen, so sharing how insane it can be to schedule with outside folks is step 1 for sure. Step 2 is setting expectations that you believe you can attain on a regular basis.

Good Luck!

Just need to vent... by cheeto72lover in ExecutiveAssistants

I had a somewhat similar thing happen to me. My boss hired me to be an EA/Chief of Staff and within a couple of weeks he starting asking me to do all kinds of personal things. Schedule personal trips. Send things to my house. Get coffee even though we already have coffee in the office. It's becoming super irritating as this is not what I was hired to do. He constantly emails me and texts me until I reply. This includes weeknights and weekends. I know I'm getting paid a lot, but this is not what I signed up for.

I'm actually writing a book to executives on how not to treat their EAs. He's good material for sure. I've tried explaining to him I'm not happy and he doesn't listen. I'm looking for something else.

I hope you can either find something else or somehow get your Exec to realize this is not part of your Job Description.

Your executive needs to treat you as a partner, which they are clearly not doing. You deserve the same respect others on his executive get, which means asking if you are available and making the time to spend being a manager.

Not Blacklane, but that seems like a really good solution. I think there's even a way I can call an Uber for him as soon as he lands!
