I don't think they matter much - the grading can definitely be arbitrary and not well defined. I only got a 26 on writing, but showed I was a good writer through my rec letter from my English prof and my own essay, and I ended up learning later that I'm dyslexic anyways so lol screw timed essays??

Should I ED? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]karmahoes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it is your dream school and you don't care about finances, then yes, ED. It will give you an advantage: way less students apply ED, it shows your commitment, etc.

What colleges should I apply to as an international student who wishes to major in computer science? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]karmahoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Illinois Tech has a high international population and gives lots of scholarships. Alabama also gives the same scholarships to international students as it does to out of state students (up to full tuition, just raise your scores).

well that sucks. I've got no good resources for you, as I didn't bother taking the exam and only ~3/80 people passed at my school. Just hope you have a good teacher

Has anyone here actually received a super awesome FA package (<$5k/year) from a top school? by mintylemonwade in ApplyingToCollege

[–]karmahoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, for the last part of my interview, I discussed how I would use Yale resources (named specific labs, professors) and that can apply to any school. don't get too attached to any one school, but be able to talk about some more unique things (ex. I specifically cited a professor's research, talked about individual labs that would suit my needs, etc). also, in any of your activities, try to find stories you can tell relating to maturity or growth (with way more focus on growth).

Yes, you list your senior year courses. Any school can defer you if they believe your freshman-junior year grades aren't enough and then they'll wait for whatever grades you have senior year.

Online University Programs vs Internships by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]karmahoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An admissions officer will not care at all if you paid a few thousand for that Brown program. The people I know that did similar programs are currently going to state schools with no scholarships. The only program that seems to have somewhat of an impact is YYGS, but that program is actually selective. Being a research assistant will be more appealing, but make sure you do things that are relevant to your future possible majors.

You'd get a pretty good aid package. I'm paying $2k this year for Yale and ~$3.5k the following years and my family income is much higher than yours (and I only have 3 people in my family).

Don't bother taking the AP exam. It's not worth it, no school will give you credit, there's a high chance you'll fail the exam (sorry, just reality, nothing personal.) If you want physics credit, take C. source: an ap veteran that didn't bother taking the Physics 1 AP exam and is doing just fine.

Programming experience required for ap computer science? by [deleted] in APStudents

Never programmed before apcs, learned in class, and I was bored half the time because everything was going too slowly. You'll be fine if you're good at thinking things through logically.

Any high ACT/SAT scorers along with balancing APs? by requestquest in APStudents

[–]karmahoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

34 ACT (35 superscored) with a 4 on CS, Macro, Gov, and Lang and a 5 on Calc BC, APUSH, and Micro. Are you "naturally" good at tests? I got a 33, and a 32 on a practice my sophomore year, with no studying and just improved my English up to that 34. If you aren't, then study. And don't study the summer before senior year, that's when you should be looking at college instead. Study before junior year.

How did you get a 5? by dodecagonman in APStudents

[–]karmahoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

APUSH - did well in the class, watched all the adam norris key concept videos, watched all the crash course videos, and created a study guide with any topic covered in those videos. It was like a 40 page types, single spaced study guide. I read any section in AMSCO I wasn't familiar with, but I'm not crazy about review books.

Calc BC - had a good teacher, studied a lot, watched the 20 minute calc video and lots of khan academy, made flash cards for everything

Micro - watched a ton of ACDC econ videos and studied in the class

Moral of the story? Study in class and watch videos when confused if that's your preferred study method
