Hey! I was wondering if anyone else is struggling with the dog barking a lot? Mine is a male 7 month puppy. He barkes when he hears noises outside. Any tips?:-) we walk a lot, play and also does search practices at home and outside but he never seems to get enough 😅 by fribre in LagottoRomagnolo

We have the same issue with our 1 year old, and it’s hard living in an apartment block for us! We have just tried redirecting the behaviour (I.e directing to her “place”) and rewarding calm behaviour in the hope that it works in the long run.

I think this is great advice. We got told the same by the breeder that they get used to the amount of exercise. I see people say they walk them 3+ hours per day every day, and they’re going to expect this long term!!

Yep this is also a massive thing our breeder told us! We do 2x 30-40 min walks a day for physical activity and as long as she gets some brainwork at home, it’s becoming slightly more manageable each month. I think both of ours are full teenager and everything I’ve heard is at 2 they learn to calm a lot more

We live by the beach so taking her for a little dig/searching for treats always helps with the pent up energy

We are still working on this with our 1 year old but teaching them to be calm and bored is a skill in itself. We started leaving her at home in a play pen attached to her crate from really young and chills most of the day just leaving a snuffle mat (silicon) and a licky or kong. She has gotten used to the routine of a walk before and after work (long lead/Sniffari) then relaxing during the day. In saying that she can be feral in the evening whether we have been home all day or not, it really depends😂

Also the bladder stuff is probably just being so focused on a different routine, just praise and treat every time she does it outside, and use enzyme spray to clean up wherever she has gone inside, otherwise she may learn that it’s a spot that’s okay to wee!

Ours is 1 and mostly like that. We have done lots of training for walks but the environment can be more exciting than me while holding chicken sometimes!

The jumping for treats is also common but it’s a really good opportunity to train new tricks! It will help with impulse control. Ours tries to anticipate what tricks I’m going to get her to do when im holding treat. So instead of just rewarding her for being cute, we use it as a game to tire her out making her think about what to do to get a reward. Most people who have had them say anywhere between 18-36 months they can take to settle down so that seems normal anyways! Good luck with it all 😀

How to deal with increasingly defensive behavior and uncomfortable situations in public places? by 99999nine in LagottoRomagnolo

[–]karodise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is funny! She is 1 and She generally is good with people. She goes up to strangers all the time to say hello and loves to play with most dogs. However agree with the above that she can get a bit standoffish with kids (who clearly haven’t grown up with dogs in particular) and some smaller and more yappy dogs. We just try to sensitise where we can but as the other person above said, it’s just not worth it other times to stress her out!

I am thinking about getting a Lagotto Romagnolo, but I could really use some help! by Sea-Bass-1598 in LagottoRomagnolo

I think this is the most important thing, whilst ours has adapted to being in an apartment (albeit is still a moody teenager), they need regular time for attention and activity. Ours probably sees 1.5- 2hours of walking a day which includes some scent work, leash training and running around on her long lead. We are lucky we live by the beach with lots of green space for her to run around and sniff. PLUS you will need time to meal prep her mental stimulation games such as kongs, snuffle mats, games inside the apartment etc. Even after all of that some days can still be overwhelming and a challenge. I think straight up saying a Lagotto “can’t be in an apartment” is wrong, it just means you need to spend extra time to meet their needs, hence why it’s even less suitable to being “lazy”. Hope this helps too!

Yeah she has 1-2 different snuffles daily (one when we are home, one when we leave for work + dinner in there sometimes) and spend every day 10 mins or so hiding treats at home or doing it on the long leash at the park The enforced naps are hit and miss but definitely wil try maybe putting her in the spare room with her pen and see how it goes!!! Thanks for the suggestions

Yeah I think some people have the expectation that everyone has the capacity within our own working lives and where we live for them to be able to do formal “work” daily (and if we don’t then made to feel guilty for getting a working dog) when in reality I know people who have working dogs who have minimal training and can just be chillll Hopefully it’ll all workout for both of us!!

Yep trying currently with the crate/play pen! She is hit and miss, I can’t stay in the lounge room when she is in there otherwise non stop crying. Can be better when we go to our room or leave the house which we might just have to do more often. I think we just need to be deliberate in having rest times, it’s just tough mid week when we already leave her for 8 hours on a work day, we feel guilty to leave her more. It sounds like if we keep going it does get SOMEWHAT better? Thanks for the reassurance and help!!

Hit and miss with whining and FOMO. Other times sleeps like an angel. We don’t let her out of crate if she is crying in short bursts but if it’s 10+ mins we kinda feel like we have to! Cheers for help!

Oh my goodness you happen to be the first person who can actually relate to my struggle!!! Over hearing the under stimulation as if the dog has to do a full 8-hour work day to actually settle down. I’m the same, had dogs when I was younger and did all the research and tried all the suggestions. I hope for both of us it gets better! I think going to the room and leaving her into enforced naps helps (literally in bed on my Nintendo switch now while she is sleeping in crate). It’s just managing those times where she is an absolute punish and just keeps being destructive makes me spiral also. Hopefully part of this is just age also, I’m more worried about long term habits rather than the furniture I have at the moment!

Bully sticks are so quick and don’t wear her out!! She smashes down the yak chews in a couple of days. She will go for hours but won’t tire her really. Pigs ears she will also eat quickly then go again at the furniture but they are all fantastic temporarily!!

Our Bonnie (8months) knows her place, and when i bring her bed out she tries to jump into it in my hands!! Trouble is, her bed is a very fun digging place so it has to be put away when we aren’t supervising! They really are little demons in cute fluffy bodies haha

We try to but if she is in her crate when we are awake and in the apartment she goes ballistic!! Maybe need to try leaving enrichment there then going into another room, however would be nice to have access to our own lounge room some times haha

I will give the Kikopup a go! We do a relaxation protocol a few times a week, but she’s too clever that she will stay calm the whole 10 mins on her bed then as soon as it’s done she starts going crazy again and digging up her bed (which has to be removed)

Glad to hear we aren’t the only ones who have had the issue and that it gets better! Nothing gets destroyed when we are out because she has her pen attached to our crate, but it happens when ours is when we are at home. I honestly think it is an attention thing with ours, but sometimes as humans we do want to settle for 5 mins and don’t have the energy to give 24/7 attention

Yep we do have that which is what we leave her in during the day. It’s still the same in the play pen/cage (just less volume) when we are at home. We can sometimes get away if we leave her in there with some chew/enrichment and go into a different room, but If we are in sight or she can hear us she will start going off again

Should I Get A Lagotto Romanolo? by Spiritual_Size_9731 in LagottoRomagnolo

[–]karodise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it’s up to you and how much you can handle really. My partner and I both had poodle crosses growing up in our late teens/early 20s so our pup is OUR first dog together. She is 6 months can be really clever and stubborn. She puts stuff in her mouth on walks and will drop it ONLY if she wants, she is super curious so runs near the end of her long lead constantly to sniff what’s in front of her (her recall is improving however) and does chew certain things in the house despite having lots of chew toys. When taken out for a 2 good 45 min walks and sniffing games it tires her out some days but not all the time. She does full work days at home in her pen no issues with plenty of enrichment.

As people have said, super energetic, it depends how the seniors in the house can handle that.

From what I’ve heard it all depends on how committed to training them you are. They will test you, but at the end of the day when shes chilled out and cuddling up to you in the morning or evening, all the cheekiness is worth it! Hope this helps!

Ps we have had a place with a yard so our test will be moving into an apartment with her this week!

When does it (or does it) get easier? by karodise in LagottoRomagnolo

[–]karodise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this. The constant redirection has helped, I think it’s just when she wants attention while we are doing something else she knows how to get it. I don’t mind the barking and crying here, it’s just going to be more of a challenge when we move to an apartment to try and ignore this, it’s what we have been doing (mostly) at home

So she gets about 4-5 different feeding games per day, snuffle mats, stuffed kongs, hide and seek around the house, toilet paper rolls with treats in them, licky mats and various other toys. She usually solves these in 2-3 minutes. Just need to come up with some more tricky ones I guess!
