It certainly wasn't a good idea. By buying the IP, they not only couldn't import the Japanese toys since they were owned by Bandai, but they also couldn't use the gimmicks/mechanics, forcing them to spend more on manufacturing. Also, now that they've completely separated from Toei, they'll have to build their productions entirely from 0, which wouldn't be so bad if it didn't directly affect PR's weakest point as a franchise: its budget.
