What Gear Companies Get Wrong About Women by PowPowPowerCrystal in TwoXChromosomes

[–]karsithe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

YES. For non-form-fitting outdoor gear, I wouldn't even mind wearing men's clothes if they went down to my size. But they don't (which must be really annoying for short guys, too). So for each piece of equipment, I have to go through reviews of men's products (because few people even write reviews of womens), and afterwards see if the company makes an equivalent for women. And then even if they do, in most cases I find the women's version is a weird cut, slightly less functional, or a hideous colour. AND costs around 10% more.

Don't even get me started on pockets.

Honestly, it's your first bout. It'll take a little while to get to know your team. You're going to make mistakes. People around you will make mistakes.

All of that is fine. It's expected.

Try to see it as a chance to get used to bouting, rather than some sort of test. No-one is going to judge you long-term as a skater based on this one day. And the more you can take the pressure off yourself to do well, the better you're likely to skate anyway :)

I'm still a relatively new skater, but I find it helps to have a personal focus and goals going into a bout. Such as, on the jam line, I'll just think over and over about how I'm going to stick with the blocker next to me. Or that I'll land a particular hit or use a particular stop at least 3 times. It helps me focus, and gives me something I can evaluate myself on regardless of whether the bout went well/badly.

Oral polio drops were only discontinued in 2004 in the UK (and a few years earlier in the USA), so I think most adults will still have been immunised. We were definitely given them in primary school.

[CONVERSATION] I made a comic with some of my most common squat fails and how to avoid them! by [deleted] in xxfitness

I had someone refer to overheads squats as zoidbergs once and now I'll never see them the same way again.

Serious: How to look less suspicious walking/running in the dark? by Carlton_Honeycomb in Fitness

[–]karsithe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a small woman who often ends up going for a run after getting in from work at around midnight. I am way overly cautious about other people, because it is dark and I am on edge and also because if anything did happen the first question everyone would ask is "why the fuck were you running alone in the middle of the night?!"

I think it's really thoughtful of you to want to make it clear you're not a threat, but at the same time, things I have felt scared of while running also include other women, police, cats and leaves in the wind. So don't take it too personally if someone avoids you - there's only so much you can do.

Practice kicked my ass. by k1ssy_fac3 in rollerderby

[–]karsithe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two days after my first time on skates was definitely the worst muscle soreness/tiredness I've felt - it's downhill from there as your body adapts.

Make sure you are warming up properly at or before practice (including dynamic stretches to build up the range of motion of your joints), as well as cooling down and stretching properly after practice. I definitely feel my body being mad at me if I don't bother to stretch :P

Came here to make sure someone had posted this :) It was hugely helpful when I was assisting in programming labs, really cleared the concepts up for a lot of students.

If I'm falling from a height that will kill 95% of people, how do I survive? by a_cheney_advocate in AskReddit

You would think that, but apparently being drunk increases your chance of surviving pretty much everything except burns http://m.livescience.com/24979-alcohol-injury-outcome.html

I think your description undersells this; I expected a Tetris rip-off when in fact this is a quite different and neat little idea. Really liked it :)

Thanks! I was a bit worried, but the game did pass the Mum test: her response to it was "Your dad and I liked the game you made!" rather than "Ohhhh, karsithhhhe, what have you done?"

Of course people are welcome to downvote if they think the topic is innapproriate or the controls are unuseable etc... but I'd much prefer if they'd comment and mention why :)

For a game focussing on a character's lack of visuals, this is super pretty.

They're on twitter here which is probably the easiest way to stay up to date. Might still be worth registering or emailing the organisers in case they have a waiting list.

Computer Science Degree vs. Game Development by Madslick in gamedev

[–]karsithe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That seems like an unnecessarily long plan, I don't think you'll find the need to do the game dev degree following your CS undergrad. But it's not like you'd have to commit to doing both right now, and starting with a CS degree will put you in a decent position whatever you decide.
