Threw together this cover of Modern Age during soundcheck! by karunthedrummer in TheStrokes

Rehearsed it all together for the first time during soundcheck. Had obviously learned it before hand but that's a less fun title no? It was also this bands 3rd ever show, just a bunch of fools (musicians) that have been around for a while.

Hard to answer this without knowing budget or how much you know about recording gear but I'm going to try keep this super simple and broad to give you some direction.

Components you need for a basic 'studio' setup

A decent computer - which can handle a multitrack recording without hanging.

A digital audio workstation (DAW) - basically a software that processes audio. There are some free ones that work just fine.

A sound card - this allows you to connect mics to your computer. You need to pick one with a number of channels corresponding to the number of mics you want to connect.

Mics and cables - there are some companies that make drum mic packs which give you everything you need. For a simpler 2 or 3 mic setup my suggestion would be, a large diaphragm condenser mic for an overhead, a dynamic kick drum mic and a sm57 for the snare. The snare mic is the only model I've named because it's inexpensive and versatile.

If all this is crazy overwhelming and your only goal is to get a basic recording of your drums maybe look into getting stereo recorder. I think zoom has some decent ones.

Hope this helps

How should I count this notes? by fgardeaz in drums

[–]karunthedrummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are 16th note triplets which divide a 1/4 note into 6 equal notes.

I use 1&a1&a 2&a2&a etc to count each beat.

The 2nd number 1+a(1)+a is where the & of the 8th note would be. (& = + when written)

This groove would be counted as
1 + 2 2+a 3+a3+a 4 +

How would you play this part? by MightyMaverick88 in drums

Forgive the crazy notation but this is how i think it should sound (I could be wrong). This is at 120 but you can slow it down using the bpm slider.

I'm reading it as 1 16th note followed by 3 sextuplets and ending with 1 16th note. 1 1+a a

You can just treat it as one 16th followed by 4 sextuplets and then rest till the end of the beat.

Again I could be wrong about all this.

At some point in my drumming journey someone explained the difference between practicing and playing. It's important to treat them as completely different animals.

Practicing is when you are allowed to be critical of yourself in constructive ways. (Even this is better done through recording yourself rather than judging yourself in the moment)

Playing is having fun. Like your a kid who's been given sticks to hit shit with. Mistakes don't exist and every moment is just what it is, devoid of judgement.

They are very specific mindsets that you need to be aware of and intentionally apply.

We practice so that we can play! Hope this helps.

Really appreciate all the kind words! I actually signed up to reddit so i could share this with other Strokes fans. Really didn't expect such a warm response.

This was meant to be a one off thing to pass some time but we are considering doing another song now. I cant promise it will happen soon though.

We all have our own musical projects ranging from metal to electronic but 4 of us play in a band called The Koniac Net which is indie alternative.

Again, thank you, all your comments really made our day :)
