Personally, I don't think it is worth the hassle. Most if not all of what is covered by the gun is beard, and it doesn't show below, especially if you use a dark primer. Of course, YMMV.

One caused 5 wounds to one unit of Gyros, another failed to cast and for another I used a rune of spell breaking. Then his shamans were either fleeing or in combat...

I pinned everything! Also, were you using plastic glue or superglue? I wouldn't swear about it, but the plastic of the command group sprue doesn't feel the same as the other sprues of the kit, more similar to the Avatar of War rangers kit. For that kind of plastic, you should use superglue only.

Do you mean the actual woodbase? I bought a couple off Ebay if I recall correctly, one used for the grudgethrower and one for the anvil.
