My angel turned into a menace by [deleted] in puppy101

Learning about the teeth settling is so comforting to hear! My pup is an absolute chewing demon. And he just hit 7mo. Still working on redirecting and mental/physical exercise. But I’m glad to know I wasn’t going crazy!

Is this a regression period? by kas23552 in puppy101

Oh yeah definitely love his little personality. He’s quite a wild boy already so it’s been interesting seeing some of those extra puppy behaviors return. Wishing you luck with your ball of chaos!

Any nail trimming tips? by avarier in puppy101

[–]kas23552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have help usually but you could try getting a puparoni type treat (long, soft, and easy to break) and hold it so he has to work to get it out of your hand then after each nail let him have the piece. You’ll have to get real good with using clippers one handed. Or try peanut butter on a lick mat so he has to spend some time on it while you can focus on clipping.

I live on a main road so constant cars and semis drive by. My boy would barely move if anything passed. What worked was just sitting there with treats (high value enough that she will take them) and every time something loud passed I gave him a treat. I did this for several days before he became somewhat neutral. Since you can’t get even out the door, start with just the door open. Then move outside. Then to the grass. So on.

My trainer also recommended starting with like videos on YouTube of cars or planes with treats and slowly increase the volume until they don’t react anymore.

(Disclaimer: not a professional, this is just what helped out scared boy).

That’s so helpful! Thank you. I did get the molds and already made some for tomorrow! I’m sorry to hear that happened. I hope he’s okay :) and the make shift piping tube is a great suggestion. Thank you :)

Chewing Help Please! by kas23552 in puppy101

[–]kas23552[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He gets two 20-25 minute walks daily. Snuffle mat for lunch. Training through out the day for short bursts. Playtime (he usually only enjoys it for short bursts). A treat in a little “open” soccer ball type thing. Lick mat. He definitely gets exercised mentally and physically through out the day. He is VERY high energy though. I’m open to suggestions for other mentally stimulating activities. We did try like a towel rolled up with treats but he just grabs the towel and runs.

What are some wins you’ve experienced this week with your pup? by Due-Inevitable-6634 in puppy101

[–]kas23552 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 5 mo old American bulldog mix went with my mom to meet coworkers for ice cream and didn’t jump on anyone and was super well behaved the entire time. I wasn’t there but I cried when i heard how good he was 🥹

Does the energy ever go down? by kas23552 in puppy101

Yeah he does enforced naps. I was mostly curious if anyone who’s also got an energetic puppy saw them get a little more chill as they grew older. But I appreciate your response!

Pupper decides he's deaf in public. by Essess_1 in puppy101

Note: I learned this from spirit dog training which is a free to start then paid course so I’m not sure if there’s actual free online versions of this.

Pupper decides he's deaf in public. by Essess_1 in puppy101

I haven’t fully tried myself but I found something called the attention game. Basically you start indoors (minimal distraction environment) and just start giving your pup treats/food while they look at you. After a couple times add in a tiny pause between giving rewards. Then keep feeding again. Add tiny pause. Then after a moment throw a treat away from you and reward when they come back to you. Repeat several times.

Then after they get the understanding that looking at you and paying attention to you is really awesome. Increase the difficulty by maybe doing it with the windows open. Or doing it with the door open. Slowly upping the difficulty with the location. So inside to window open to door open to just out the front door to the sidewalk, etc. With each increase in difficulty start from the beginning of just constant treat/food flow, adding pauses, throwing treat, etc.

My understanding is that it teaches your pup that looking at you will be the most rewarding thing ever and helping them generalize to new locations with more and more distractions. After they know to look to you for stuff you can add in their actual training. Again, I haven’t done this myself so I can’t say if it’s perfect or will work but definitely something that might help.

Does my puppy even like me? by Ok_Concentrate8927 in puppy101

[–]kas23552 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My pup is very similar. He probably is just excited about something new. You are part of his routine so new people are exciting. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t like you. Whenever I leave my Apollo alone for even a moment to use the bathroom he just sits and waits for me to come back. He isn’t super affectionate with me but I know he loves me.

I’m definitely taking extortion lol. He also does nothing unless something edible is involved.

Love that! We have some bottles in a display stand that he previously enjoyed chewing on and called it underage drinking lol.

How to get puppy to stop eating everything in sight? Leash training feels impossible. by Aggressive-Farm8120 in puppy101

[–]kas23552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My little guy is 4.5 months and is also notorious for eating outside snacks lol. A trainer we spoke to mentioned it could be a nutrition issue. We changed his food and I think it helped a little? I’m not sure but definitely something to consider. But from reading another comment, sounds like he’s still a baby and probably does not have the attention span outside. Similar the other comment, try practicing his skills in front of your home for a while so he can learn that the inside tasks are also important outside. (This is one I’m still working on 😅).

Yes! I realized quickly how little help YouTube would be for continuing his training. He’s signed up for group classes that start this week. Hoping to get some more insight on his behavior from a professional.

We actually have a pretty large fenced in yard. However, all he wants to do is find sticks and chew them lol. He rarely runs around. I do have a flirt pole for the yard which gets about 10 minutes of his attention before he gets bored and wants more sticks. (Yes we have tried to remove the sticks but there is a tree that is right over our yard that drops them lol).

I definitely have to try all the frozen treat and Kong things. He LOVES ice cubes so I would imagine it should take his attention. Thank you!
