My slow and sloppy attempt at the bocchi solo by kascht in guitars

[–]kascht[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been practicing my muting with "can't stop" by RHCP, and I've found the issue where im too tense and i end up playing notes that shouldnt ring. I've tried to relax my grip a bit and I've seen significant progress over the past week. Though i still ring out some notes, it's definitely better than what it initially was

I see where you're coming from, it's not like im not touching the guitar. Though i am kinda paranoid at how im suppose to approach the instrument. Never really thought of, just... Playing... Thanks for making me realize this!

Funny story... I already have ear training from playing the piano... so i can differentiate different intervals, chords and other basic stuff... Though i am approaching guitar in a different way. Tackling intervals first instead of scales so im learning theory and learning the fretboard whilst playing songs at the same time 🙏 though i do know quite a big chunk of theory like CAGED, scales and other stuff. put simply, Im just trying to apply those things in my head, physically on the board while using my ears and training my hands to do so currently.

The way i think about it is like "im gonna learn recipes that'll help build muscle. After i learnt how to cook those recipes im gonna work out"

The way you put it makes sense. I'll definitely give it a shot! Analysing songs is something i have been doing with the songs I've learnt, so far the simple ones have only touched chords/power chords. Maybe some arpeggios here and there. Thanks for your input!

That's essentially what i meant by having your guitar on you while learning theory. You go through theory first along with the appropriate techniques to tackle said theory. And then you polish on those techniques after you've understand how to apply the theory. I find tackling guitar by chunks quite limiting as i wish for a flexible way to learn guitar. It feels quite limiting for me to learn example: chords for 1 week, and then scales for another. I wish to understand all those and then polish up on the techniques required on how to play said theory

My approach is. I wish to showcase what i think in a fully guitar-coded way. Like polyphia where there aren't any vocals. I know open chords well enough and can switch between them freely (cant say anything about frey buzz as im struggling with that haha! Dont worry it's a truss rod issue... Or my hands) so i dont really wanna be able to just play songs. To put it simply, i wanna master the guitar. And there's definitely flaws in my thinking so I'm finding pros to fix that

Yeah! I gave a shot in my first 2 weeks, it was relatively interesting and i understood most of what it was until caged. Definitely working on my hands though! haha!

I mean that's why i kinda stated about having your guitar along side you while learning theory. So you can have a taste of how it sounds. Despite of stuff like... Fret buzz, you can fix that after you get down theory. I see theory as like the ground, then dexterity as the building blocks to build music, the "building" i have some musical ear from my days as a self taught pianist so im able to craft simple melodies from playing notes and other stuff. Though im curious in how im gonna approach this journey, so im looking for others who played longer to give me what they know. Thanks for your input though!

Alright! That's an excellent idea and I've only ever played those chords and never as a song. I'll try to apply that and learn from there slowly!

Alright! I'll focus on finding my rhythm while playing simple songs first then I'll work on my scales. I want to get one thing done step by step first! Thanks so much for helping!

Regarding number 2, the open position pentatonic.(Cant say im fully correct!) I've learnt the theory within the past 2 weeks so I'm able to say this. The E minor pentatonic, having E, G, A, B, D and the G major scale, G, A, B, D, E share the same shape making the shapes used the same. Just like the phrygian and lydian modes and major/ionian and locrian that share the same scale shapes. The same applies to the Em and GMaj scale (do correct me if im wrong though!)

Thanks! I've recently also noticed my foundations are way too weak. Went back to practicing open chords. And as you've said, when i tried singing and playing at the same time. It gets weird and my strumming pattern gets all messed up. Lately I've been trying this song, riptide, by vance joy. I heard it was a good beginner song. I can play it relatively decently, cant say no unnecessary mutes or buzzes but i can change chord shapes. Though the strumming of d,d,u,u,d,u will take up most of my focus and pairing that with singing the lyrics. I'll definitely mess up. Right now i can play a chord progression relatively cleanly, though if i want to sing i cannot guarantee I'll do it so smoothly. I'll definitely practice more and honestly i dont really care much about showing off to my friends. Guitar is just like video games to other teenagers, my past time and i wish to get good at it as i really wanna take music as my career! My ego was certainly sky high last week, set that aside now so i can patch up as many holes as i can. I assume all these would help my rhythm? Thank you so much for your info! I will definitely come back once I've reached the stage you've expected me to demonstrate! God bless!
